Dear Friends, As Holy Week commences tomorrow, we wanted to let you know about the resources and opportunities for shared worship which, as a Bishop’s Staff Team, we will be providing through the week. We know that many of you will also be offering ways to journey spiritually through the week to your communities and want to thank you for your creativity in marking this most important of weeks. Please find our schedule for the week below. You will be able to find each day’s services and reflections on the Diocesan website . Throughout the week: Winchester Cathedral will provide Common Worship Morning and Evening Prayer each day, at 8.30am and 5.30pm respectively, via Zoom. Every day there will be a reflection from one of our Bishops, Dean Catherine or members of the Cathedral Chapter which will follow the Holy Week story, using John’s Gospel as a basis. Palm Sunday: Bishop Tim will preside at a pre-recorded Sunday Eucharist from Wolvesey, with Sally Dakin preaching. This will be available on the Diocesan YouTube channel . Winchester Cathedral will provide a reading of the Passion, featuring multiple voices from English cathedrals organised by the Precentors. Maundy Thursday: Bishop Tim will provide a video message about renewing our vocational commitment as disciples, BCMers, lay ministers and ordained ministers. This will be available on the Diocesan YouTube channel . A full Chrism and recommitment service will take place in the autumn. Dean Catherine will preside at a pre-recorded Eucharist from the Deanery, including a sequence of foot washing, Cathedral choral music and a Vigil sequence. Good Friday: The Cathedral Chapter will provide a pre-recorded service, lasting one hour, comprised of reflection, poetry and reading. This will again feature Cathedral choral music. The theme will be ‘My Song is Love Unknown; Reflections on The Cross’ and will include veneration of the cross and prayer. Holy Saturday/Easter Vigil: English Cathedrals will provide a vigil comprised of readings and reflections on the theme of ‘Rumours of Hope: a vigil for our times’ with Paula Gooder and others, including poets. Easter Sunday: Bishop Tim will preside at a pre-recorded Sunday Eucharist from Wolvesey, with Sally Dakin preaching. This will be available on the Diocesan YouTube channel . Dear Friends, For today’s update, Richard Brand, Archdeacon of Winchester, has shared a reflection about the importance of self care as we approach Holy Week: One recent request I received was to fill in a questionnaire about clergy morale in the current crisis. Having spoken and listened to far more clergy than usual over the past few weeks I felt in a reasonable position to respond, and my basic response was that clergy morale was high, in fact, really very high. It has been immensely encouraging and often inspiring to hear of the creativity, ingenuity and sheer dedication with which clergy have adapted to a rapidly changing situation and adopted often unfamiliar ways and means of continuing their ministry. However, I wonder what the real effect of this adaption and adoption is? One person I spoke to said how ‘energised’ they felt by the new skills they were learning and by the community networks they were establishing; in the next phone call the person had been doing similar things but this time I heard a confession of exhaustion. Clearly different personalities are responding in different ways; another person in one breath said how as an introvert they certainly weren’t missing the tyranny of meetings but in the next added that they were finding the constant phone calls draining. Talking with colleagues we are finding that as clergy step up and respond with great faithfulness to our calling in these days, the suspension of so many of the familiar patterns is leading for some to suspending some of the usual time off and down time we all need.

Dear Friends, As We Approach the Coming Weekend, We Are Once
Dear Friends, As we approach the coming weekend, we are once again facing a Sunday without being able to physically join our local communities. Whilst we know that the Church is not just a series of (now closed) buildings, it is difficult to not be able to pray and participate in services in one place. However, we have been heartened by the work being done by so many of you to create ways of enabling Christian communities to meet online – whether through celebrating services on Zoom, holding pastoral Skype calls or creating social media prayer resources. Thank you for helping your communities to find ways of encountering God’s love at this most difficult of times. Today, the Archbishops and Bishops of the Church of England have written to all clergy to offer some suggestions for ways in which we can continue to minister to our communities (paying attention to those with access to the internet, as well as those who do not) at the present time. You can read the letter here and we hope you will find it useful. Ahead of this weekend, Bishop Tim and his wife Sally have recorded a communion service, which you will be able to view on our Diocesan YouTube channel from Sunday morning. Please do share the link so that we can still join together as one Diocese in prayer even though we cannot see each other in person. In addition, Winchester Cathedral is hosting a daily video reflection and prayer, which you can access here . Each day you will find a new prayer and reflection from members of the Cathedral community, which we hope you will find helps to provide some spiritual nourishment over the coming days and weeks.

Guidelines on Working with Retired Clergy
1. Introduction The 200 or so retired clergy (whether formerly stipendiary or SSM) who live, or worship, in the Winchester Diocese can now expect to have longer years of healthy retirement than ever before and many wish to continue in some form of active, post-retirement ministry. Many work successfully in ministerial roles in parishes, but the experience can be ‘hit and miss’ and can sometimes lead to frustration and underutilisation of a valuable resource. These Guidelines are an attempt to put the relationships between retired clergy, parish clergy and the Diocese on a firmer foundation to the benefit of all. 2. Expectations and Responsibilities for Parish Clergy 2.1 When a member of the clergy retires to your parish or you move into a parish where there is a retired priest, arrange to meet with them to discuss options for ministry within the parish. 2.2 Remember that the newly retired may find it helpful to take a ‘sabbatical’ for a while (six months is often used as a good rule of thumb here), as they discern what kind of future ministry God might be calling them to. 2.3 In agreeing options, the parish needs to understand that the priest is retired and offering his/her services as a volunteer; often with other commitments (such as family). 2.4 It can be helpful to ascertain whether the retired priest is looking for regular opportunities for ministry or offering to be available for support where this might be needed. It may be that for reasons of church tradition (or other reasons) the retired priest is seeking to offer to help elsewhere in the Diocese.

Annual Report & Newsletter 2019 Hampshire & the Islands Historic Churches Trust Annual Report 2019 supported by Foreword from the Chairman Greetings to all our Friends and supporters, and my warmest thanks for helping our Trust to have another very successful year. It’s been one full of important changes and excellent events which this Report details. In 2019 we became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, for legal and ﬁnancial reasons, though our name and purposes stay the same. John Steel, our Treasurer, has steered us through a most labyrinthine process with skill and patience in spite of a serious injury sustained in the middle of it all! We owe him a huge debt of thanks. Please note that we now have a new charity number if you need to use it. Thanks, too, to ALL of you for making our Ride and Stride so great last September. When I set a target of £70,000 at the AGM I hardly dared hope we would achieve it and, thanks to you, we have done! Our County Coordinating team, our Area Coordinators, Church Reps and all participants have excelled, and I hope you enjoy reading about it and remembering a glorious day in September. It is only through this kind of eﬀort that we can rejoice in bringing help to many beautiful churches and so play a part in preserving our heritage. As ever, I’m grateful to the Committees and Trustees for excellent help, advice and hard work. I’m sad to say that one of our most hardworking and vibrant members, Meryl Balchin, is stepping back from the many tasks she has undertaken for us and we cannot thank her enough for all she has done in the last ten years.
