ABU SAEED2 1Department of Zoology, University of Chittagong, Chittagong, Bangladesh 2 555, Kazipara, Mirpur, Dhaka-1216, Bangladesh Abstract The occurrence of Russell’s viper (Daboia russelii Shaw and Nodder 1797) in Bangladesh is century old information and its rarity was known to the wildlife biologists till 2013 but its recent booming is also causing a major threat to human life in the area. Recently it has been reported from nine districts (Dinajpur, Chapai Nawabganj, Rajshahi, Naogaon, Natore, Pabna, Rajbari, Chuadanga and Patuakhali) and old records revealed 11 districts (Nilphamari, Dinajpur, Rangpur, Chapai Nawabganj, Rajshahi, Bogra, Jessore, Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat and Chittagong). Thus altogether 17 out of 64 districts in Bangladesh, of which Chapai Nawabganj and Rajshahi are most affected and 20 people died due to Russell’s viper bite during 2013 to 2016. Its past and present distribution in Bangladesh and death toll of its bites have been discussed. Its booming causes have also been predicted and precautions have been recommended. Research on Russell’s viper is deemed necessary due to reemergence in deadly manner. Key words: Russell’s viper, Daboia russelii, Distribution, Boom, Panic, Death toll Introduction Two species of Russell’s viper are known to occur in this universe of which Daboia russelii (Shaw and Nodder 1797) is distributed in Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka (www.reptile.data-base.org); while Daboia siamensis (Smith 1917) occurs in China, Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan and Cambodia (Wogan 2012). -

Godagari Upazilla is located in High Barind Tract situated in the northwestern part of Bangladesh. A typical dry climate with comparatively high temperature prevails in this Barind area. It is particularly significant in regions with large demands for groundwater supplies to meet irrigation needs, where such resources are the key to economic growth. However, the rate of aquifer recharge is one of the most complicated factors to assess in the evaluation of groundwater resources. Assessment of recharge, by whatever method, is normally subject to large uncertainties and errors. -

It affects millions of people because groundwater is the main source of potable water in the country. This paper qualitatively evaluates an arsenic miti- gation initiative in Bangladesh from the perspective of the recipients. The initiative was implemented by a local non-government organization, the Thanapara Swallows Develop- ment Society (TSDS). The objective of the evaluation is to influence the decision-making of the aid-providers through empirically driven feedback. The paper uses the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework to assess TSDS’s activities in arsenic mitigation from the perspec- tive of the recipients. It then translates the evaluation’s findings into recommendations in terms of community development. Key words: Arsenic mitigation, Bangladesh, community development, groundwater Introduction Arsenic contamination of groundwater in Bangladesh is one of the largest examples of poisoning in the world, and it was first discovered in 1993 (United Nations International Children’s Fund [UNICEF], 2008, p. 1; Ahmed, 2005, p. 283). Groundwater is the main source of potable water in the country1. Estimates of the number of Bangladeshi people exposed to arsenic vary from 20 to 77 million (Ahmed, 2005, p. 283; Hossain, Islam, Gani, & Karim, 2005, p. 163; Jiang et al., 2013, p. 20) out of a total population of about 150 million (Government of Bangladesh [GoB], 2011). -

Wasiul Islam Forestry and Wood Technology Discipline, Khulna University, Khulna 9208, Bangladesh KUS –05/45-131205 Manuscript received: December 13, 2005; Accepted: July 9, 2006 Abstract: Different types of annual and perennial crop species have been detected in cropland agroforestry (CAF), homestead agroforestry (HAF) and annual cropping (AC) system in four Upazilas (Bagha, Charghat, Puthia and Tanore) under Rajshahi district of Bangladesh. The objectives of the study were to assess and compare farmer’s preference to different types of annual and perennial species in homestead agroforestry, cropland agroforestry and annual cropping systems, and to find out the financial values of the species among different cropping systems. The sample size was 150 small agroforestry farmers of which 50 were from cropland agroforestry, 50 from homestead agroforestry and 50 from annual cropping system. Banana (BCR = 3.85) was found as the most financially profitable species in AC system in the study area. However, four types of paddy (41% of total preference) were identified as the most preferred species in AC system. Farmers usually grew 25 different annual crop species on their croplands. Blackgram was the most profitable (BCR = 4.02) annual crop species in CAF system. Sugarcane was the most financially profitable species as a crop combination and also as sole crop. -
