Tripp GordonProfessor of HistoryTurnbull ’86 PhD Chair, History of Science,General History Editor of of Medicine the Yale Boswell Editions Bagpiper and Dear Yale Traveler, Belmond Royal Scotsman I invite you to discover the castles and mountains of North Wales, the romantic abbey ruins and scenic allure of Yorkshire, and the cultural highlights of York and Edinburgh as we explore Great Britain’s beautiful countryside. We’ll visit the remote glens and islands of the Scottish Highlands and enjoy views of craggy coastlines and towering mountains reflected in the mirror-still surfaces of the country’s storied lochs.

This trip was designed for rail aficionados, combining regional day trips by historic train in Wales and Yorkshire with the grand finale of a two-night Scottish Highlands journey aboard Belmond Royal Scotsman, one of the most luxurious trains in the world. Classic hotels reflect quintessentialBritish Castle charm and provide exquisite home bases throughout this program. Just outside the Welsh town of , we’ll overnight at Bodysgallen Hall & Spa, a National Trust estate surrounded by award-winning gardens. In York we’ll stay at the Grand Hotel & Spa, which evokes the golden age of travel from its perch in a former railway headquarters. Rounding out our journey will be The Balmoral in Edinburgh, a five-star 1902 landmark which fittingly enough began life as a grand railway hotel.

Our study leader is Gordon Turnbull ’86 PhD, General Editor of the Yale Boswell Editions, and expert on the life and times of Edinburgh-born James Boswell (1740-1795). Boswell was a renaissance-man of his era, whose exploits as a lawyer, diarist, journalist, traveler, biographer, and ninth laird of the Auchinleck Estate in Ayrshire, are memorialized in Yale’s collections at the Sterling Memorial Library. Turnbull’s lectures will regale us with Pergamon a fascinating glimpse into 18th century Britain through the eyes of Boswell–offering insight into the political and social issues of a colonial empire on the brink of change.
