As it was an opportunity they would have killed to have had at school, they decided to offer a few privileged Paul Roosers an opportunity of a lifetime. Eventually nine students were selected, and the tour was duly christened the “Cock of the Rock” tour after Peru’s national bird. We set off at 04:00 on a frigid Saturday morning with Mr Jantjie Muller waving us goodbye in his PE shorts at Cape Town International Airport. After 17 hours in the air and 9 hours of stopovers at airports, our group of 12 finally arrived in Cusco, Peru. What struck us first were the jagged mountain ranges of the Andes, covered in snow.
