Alexander 309 xiii I ————— PONDERING POETRY AND VERSE 1 A Good Poem is first cousin to the song, a rhythmic, patterned, short-short story, sequencing splendidly and sometimes quirkily designed features of language, generating multiple messages via metaphorical surprises and unexpected connections, juxtaposing startling revelations of novel meanings potentially bewitching, even baffling befuddling, and sometimes seeming irreversibly incomprehensible, yet finally combining and cooperating to inspire the still unwary audiences virtues that in concert command the poem to linger, testing and enriching the imaginations of all lucky enough to encounter it. * * * Robert Frost famously said that writing poetry with neither rhyme nor meter is like playing tennis without a net. Someone else scoffed that poetry nowadays is any writing in which the printed lines fail to reach the usual page margins. Some might consider that definition potentially at risk, as a result of recent narrowing of the page width in Poetry Magazine. Sometimes perhaps even the court has been removed by Frost himself. And why not!? 2 Poem: A composition, whether in verse or prose, having beauty of thought or language. Verse: Poetry in general, especially when light or trivial or merely metered and rhymed, but without much serious content or artistic merit. Note: The eight pages with mockingbird song notes were delivered as a con- tinuous, unbroken sequence of 96 songs sung several decades ago by a sin- gle male at midnight on top of an electric company pole north of Atlanta, Georgia. The sounds are portrayed here by a series of songs on audiospec- trographs. They show pitch changes as up and down (doubled heights of sounds represent overtones), rates of singing horizontally across the song, and intensity of the sounds by darkness of marks. Experts with audiospec- trographs can imitate the sounds closely, and often can sing songs or series of notes portrayed on audiospectrographs accurately, sometimes at their usual rates of speed. For songs and dances of mockingbirds, see p. 202 and the back cover. 4 II ————— MOVING SOFTLY THROUGH THE VILLAGE 5 Moving Softly through the Village at dusk, gaze swiveling slowly, unwillingly, witnessing the confidence of youth thronging laughingly between Dave’s Party Store and Susan’s Bridgewater Bank Tavern lives still on the rise, no apprehensions of lessening strength, balance, stamina, acuity of mind, or of aging, death, or finiteness of anything at all; no premonitions of the loneliness of such as philosophers and farmers or of the folk once within the reassuring solidarity of the surrounds of intimate social groups, but gradually, at first imperceptibly, separating, one by one, diverging quietly toward their obligatory, solitary, and final contentments.

Shaw b a Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, Harvard University, USA b Department of Biology, University of Maryland, College Park, MD, USA Received 9 May 2005; revised 27 September 2005; accepted 4 October 2005 Available online 16 November 2005 Abstract Representatives of the Orthopteran suborder Ensifera (crickets, katydids, and related insects) are well known for acoustic signals pro- duced in the contexts of courtship and mate recognition. We present a phylogenetic estimate of Ensifera for a sample of 51 taxonomically diverse exemplars, using sequences from 18S, 28S, and 16S rRNA. The results support a monophyletic Ensifera, monophyly of most ensiferan families, and the superfamily Gryllacridoidea which would include Stenopelmatidae, Anostostomatidae, Gryllacrididae, and Lezina. Schizodactylidae was recovered as the sister lineage to Grylloidea, and both Rhaphidophoridae and Tettigoniidae were found to be more closely related to Grylloidea than has been suggested by prior studies. The ambidextrously stridulating haglid Cyphoderris was found to be basal (or sister) to a clade that contains both Grylloidea and Tettigoniidae. Tree comparison tests with the concatenated molecular data found our phylogeny to be significantly better at explaining our data than three recent phylogenetic hypotheses based on morphological characters. A high degree of conflict exists between the molecular and morphological data, possibly indicating that much homoplasy is present in Ensifera, particularly in acoustic structures. In contrast to prior evolutionary hypotheses based on most parsi- monious ancestral state reconstructions, we propose that tegminal stridulation and tibial tympana are ancestral to Ensifera and were lost multiple times, especially within the Gryllidae.

One further species, Neoconocephalus retusus (Scudder) is recorded from Ontario for the first time. An updated checklist of the orthopteroids of Ontario is provided, along with notes on changes in nomenclature. Published December 2014 Introduction Vickery and Kevan (1985) and Vickery and Scudder (1987) reviewed and listed the orthopteroid species known from Canada and Alaska, including 141 species from Ontario. A further 15 species have been recorded from Ontario since then (Skevington et al. 2001, Marshall et al. 2004, Paiero et al. 2010) and we here add another eight species or subspecies, of which seven are also new Canadian records. Notes on several significant provincial range extensions also are given, including two species originally recorded from Ontario on bugguide.net. Comparative trophic ecology of five sympatric Strigiformes in central State of São Paulo, south-east Brazil. The comparative trophic ecology of five sympatric owl species was studied in the central region of the State of São Paulo, south-east Brazil. The main goals of this study were (1) to compare quantitatively the diets of owl species in terms of number and biomass of prey, (2) to describe possible ecological segregation mechanisms among species and (3) to test under different prey abundance levels whether the trophic relationship of owls followed the predictions of competition theory. Diets of all species were studied by pellet collection and analysis between 1985 and 1994. The analysis of the number of individual prey items revealed that the smaller species, Athene cunicularia (the Burrowing Owl, 110-196 g) and Megascops choliba (the Tropical Screech Owl, 80-180 g) fed mostly on insects and other arthropods. The food of Barn Owl (Tyto alba, 340-405 g) were insects and small rodents in similar propor- tions. The largest species, Asio clamator (the Striped Owl, 341-553 g) and Asio stygius (the Stygian Owl, 495-675 g) fed on vertebrates, mostly rodents and marsupials for the former, and birds and bats for the latter.

They eat your vegies, but they feed the birds and lizards. Have patience! Remember the desert operates in ‘Boom and Bust’ cycles in response to rain. If it has rained, plants and animals are ‘booming’. If there is no more rain over the next few months and things dry out, the ‘bust’ will begin and grasshopper populations will subside. As these grasshoppers feed on your citrus, have a close look at them. You may have already noticed the incredible variation. There are crickets and katydids, mantids and stick insects amongst them. Here are a few orthopterans (grasshoppers, crickets and katydids belong to the Orthoptera Order) for you to try and identify. Grasshoppers The Leopard Grasshopper Stropis maculosa Family: ACRIDIDAE Striking with its dark spots, the Leopard Grasshopper is commonly seen in a variety of habitats in Alice Springs. They are herbivorous, however the native diet is contrary to the name - they don’t eat grass as a first choice. They prefer to feed on Solanum sp. but will also readily eat your prized herbs, Caltrop, Boerhavia coccinea, and Citrus leaves before they switch to the grasses that are left over. Males of this species are small and generally quite colourful. The females are considerably larger and lack the bright yellow colouration. Juveniles of this species are surprisingly well camouflaged and are green in colour. The Toadhopper Buforania crassa Family: ACRIDIDAE Sub-family: CATANTOPINAE The Toadhopper is a plump Northern Territorian spur-throated grasshopper.
