Hunter Yarbarowh. a conwltim

He wos inwlved in surtace and wbwrtace gwlogy In the southeastern and south&& New Mexico from 1940 to 1947. In 1947 he became Assistant to h'sV ic e President and Explomtion Manager, Houston. Later assignmentr in- cluded Arm Geologist (), histant Chief Geologist (Houston), Coordinabr of the Bdn Studies Proiect, and from 1%3 tcp 1574 he was Senior Geologic Scientist .

Mr. Yarborough has served as Distinguished Lecturer of the American Association of Petrolgum Geologists, and has g iv en technical addresses on oil finding to many of the universities and most of the geological societies of the United States. He is a two-time rec ipi en t of the A. I. Levorsen Memorial Award, having received this honor in 1967 and 1971. He is a Certified Gwlcgist; a m ember of The Americcm Association of Petroleum Geologists; a Fellow of The Geological Society of America, and is a member of nwnbeous other professional organizations. PLATE TECTONICS AND THE OCCURRENCE OF MAJOR HYDROCARBON ACCUMULATIONS

Most major hydrocarbon accumulations occur in basins formed during the Meso- zoic and the Cenozoic. Many of these basins, their contained sediments, and their structural and stratigraphically trapped oil and gas fields appear to be genetically related to the hypotheses of Plate Tectonics.

Many are basins formed at plate bo u n d a rie s . Three fundamental methods of basin d eve l o pm en t according to type of plate margin deformation are reviewed: tensional , compressional, and shear-zone. Basin types, structural styles, and sedi- mentary histories are reviewed for different plate margins.

Significant intracratonic basins have developed as a result of embryonic and/or aborted "pull-apart" zones; shear-zones "cracking" the c rato n s ;and "sinks" (and their associated uplifts) due to viscosity inhomogeneities within the asthenosphere.

Many major world wide eustatic changes in sea level appear to be due to the episodic nature of sea floor spreading. Accordingly, much of the paleogeographic history of our continents appears to be related to the hypotheses of Plate Tectonics.

As stated by Pre s i dent Merrill W. I-laas, the AAPG has credibility with the Federal Government which can be used to counter the multitude ofso-called experts who, by issuing unfounded charges, have molded public opinion to make the petro- leum industry the scapegoat for the energy crisis. In an effort to provide public officials with data they can trust and use in their d ec i s i on -making process, the Special Committee on Pu b l i c Affairs has been established by the AAPG Executive Committee.

HGS member Michel T. Halbouty is the General Chairman of this Committee. Reporting to ~'mwill be District Chairmen who have responsibility for the program in the states ussigned to each. Two individuals will be appointed for each state as Direct Communicators to serve under the District Chairman.

The Direct Communicator must be a member of AAPG. He should havecordial relations with his Senator, be an i n d i v idu a I whom the Senator respects and from whom he will seek and accept advice. Preferably, the Direct Communicator should be a prominent member of the community, a competent geologist informed on current events, articulate and persuasive, motivated, and free to spend time in carrying out his duties. His contacts must be conducted on an irreproachable ethical and moral level, that of a concernedcitizen and geologist on an educational and informational mission. His duties s h a l I consist of visits with his Senator, and the frequency will depend on the existing circumstances. He will attempt to keepthe Senator informed by personal contacts, occasional telephone calls, telegrams, and letters.

Assisting the Gen. Chairman, The Dist. Chairman, and the Direct Communicator will be a Coordinating Committee under the chairmanship of J. R. Jack son, Jr., P. 0. Box 2180, Houston, Texas 77001.

Individual AAPG members who desire to participate in this program should get in touch d i rec t I y with Mr. Jackson or James H. Davis (s am e address, AC 71 3 - 221 -5979).

T his program, although directed to informing the Senators, does not preclude others from communicating with their Representatives or other elected officials when information is needed. Each member of our Association needs to keep informed and to communicate with the public by addressing clubs, schools, etc. We must deal in facts. With facts, we can perform a service to our profession and to our nation.

General C h a i rm an Halbouty will welcome response. Let's give him our full cooperation. SPECIAL NOTICES

Papers are b ei ng solicited for the G.C.A.G.S. Annual Meeting, October 22-24,, 1975, Jackson, Mississippi . This will be the Twenty-F i fth Anniversary of the G.C.A.G.S. Member societies are requested to lend their cooperation inproviding speakers for this occasior! .

Prospective speakers are urged to submit a title and, if possible, a brief abstract for consideration of the Program Committee. The Editor has set a deadline of April 1, 1975 for receipt of the ma n us c r i p t s . Specific instructions as to requirements for publication will be mailed to the authors immediately upon selection.

Please reply to Emil T. Monsour, P. 0. Box 219, Jackson, Mississippi, 39205.

Ph.D. PROGRAM IN GEOLOGY APPROVED AT UH

The University of Houston Department of Geology has been approved to award the Ph.D. Degree in Geology (including Geophysics) by the State Coordinating Board for the Texas College and University System. The program is designed for both full- time and part-time students and was initiated in response to local industry demand. Students will be accepted in the program beginning n ex t fall. Information on the prog ram and its requirements can be obtained from Dr. John C. Butler, Graduate Advisor, Geology Department, University of Houston, 77004, phone - 749-3868. COMMITTEE REPORTS PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMITTEE

The Houston Geological Society's 1974-75 Public Relations Committee is chaired this year by H. T. "Spud" Brundage, geologist with Champlin Petroleum Company. 0 t h e r members are James Montgomery, exploration editor of World Oil magazine; B. Otto Pixler of Baroid; and DeWitt Van Siclen of the University of Houston.

Objectives of this year include determination of the best, readiest, oil industry in- formation reference facilities to assist Houston-area news reporters; commendation of good work by non-geologists who make outstanding contributions to better public understanding of the ea rth sciences; attempts to provide more earth science infor- mation to public television; and d e t e rm i nation of policy for future similar HGS committees, with particular reference to radio and telecasting laws and regulations.

Public Relations is everyone's job, not just the business of a four-man P.R. commit- tee. Nothing exemplifies this point better than A. H. Wadsworth, Jr.'s fine pre- sentation on Channel 2 news as reported in the Nov., 1974 HGS Bulletin.

Perhaps, we no longer need to try so hard to reach g en e r a l reporters. Hopefully, given some encouragement and direction, they will come to us. If they do, we need to have our information ready. The oil industry's public relations program has ob- viously been unsatisfactory in the past. So, it is time to examine the reasons why, to try new approaches based on the facts, and then to move forward to constructive solutions. Spud Brundage

Our organization is celebrating itssilver Anniversary. That, in itself, makes the Auxiliary's events for this year particularly important. First was the Fashion Seminar and Luncheon. Next is the December Crafts Luncheon. Then comes our Silver Anniversary Ball in February. Midge Schrock, First Vice President (Social), is responsible for all Auxiliary events. She works with the chairman in planning, organizing, and laying the groundwork for the events. Midge moved to Houston from Son Antonio seven years ago. In San Antonio, she was active in Desk and Derrick. A past President of Geo Wives, Midge chaired the Crafts Luncheon last year. She is a member of the S h erwood Garden Club and enjoys tennis, bridge, and sewing. She and her husband, Robert J., live at 11314 Oak Spring. The Lafayette women succeeded in making the 24th Annual Gulf Coast Convention another success for those women attending with their husbands. The hostesses were recognized through- out the convention with their long southern dresses and bonnets. Enjoying an Arcadian luncheon with a style show of Mardi Gras cost um es were these members: Betty Burkett, Fran Burkhead, Norma Bacho and Myrtis Trowbridge. Seen at the brunch and antique show were these members: Belen Scholl, Faye Lewis, Suzanne Howell and Janny Carsey. By the way, if you need to bor- row a bonnet or need a good rice recipe from a french cookbook, be sure and call one of these gals because those were the favors from the convention. Celebrating their Silver Anniversary in Octob~rwere Doug and E. J. Bacon with a five day trip to the Las Brisas in Acapulco--Only to return home to an anniversary party given by friends in their honor. For this special occasion, friends and relatives came as far as Iowa and North Carolina. In mid-October, Virginia and Harold Voigt were touring Spain and Portugal only to return to the States as Gladys and A. L. Selig were leaving. The Seligs spent eleven days visiting Madrid and many other cities of Spain, as well as 7 days on the coastline of Portugal, and then on to Tangier, Morocco. Gladys had a wonderful time on her long awaited trip. Elma Carey joined 14 other Texans for an eleven day bus tour of the New England States, as well as the south ern part of Canada. She was delighted when they were caught in the first snowfall of the year. Jerry and Jimmy Wheeler flew to Son Juan the latter part of October where they caught an English Liner and cruised the Caribbean. They spent a week in Barbados, then spent their second week visiting Grenada, St. Thomas and Curacao Islands. Jerry reports that they had a wonder- ful trip but enioyed the food aboard the ship a little too much.. .. . The Williams, John and Alene, are home from Hot Springs, Ark. after a two week holiday. Don't forget the Arts and Crafts Show, December 5, at Lakeside Country Club. Avis reports it's going to be another success.

HAVE A HAPPY HOLIDAY! Glenna Floyd

GEO-WIVES

For those of you p lan n i n g to make the Geo-Wives Christmas 0 pen House, December 8, piease note the change of address. The new location will be the D. W. Lane home, 12214 Mossycup, (call 461-1637 for directions). The time will be 4 - 8 p.m. This change occurred because, while the Thomases were en joying a board of directors meeting of the National Ocean Industry Association in La Jolla, California, their house was vandalized on Halloween. P& Boss and husband, Ralph, are getting ready to l eave for a skiing vacation in Northern California the first of December. Margo Hagen's daughter, Kathy, became the new proud bride of Larry Clevenger in a small chapel wedding November 2. Geo-Wives received extra special service at Brennan's November 20, (due to the Brennan sisters being in town). Dr. Jane Preston, Psychologist, gave a very interesting talk to 51 mem- bers and their guests on adapting to a new environment in a new community . Many members joined us at the meeting for the first time and brings the Geo-Wives membership to 73.
