MESSAGE FROM THE CEO Dear Wolfpack Community, Welcome to our third home round of the West Coast Classic. Tonight we welcome the Eastern Suns from Kalamunda. It is great to see both our Men’s and Women’s team sitting on top of the ladder with unbeaten records. However it is even more pleasing to see how both teams are doing it with a long term approach of mixing experience with youth. Both teams are exciting to watch and our Women’s coach Charles Nix is doing a great job leading the Women this season. Last weekend was a big weekend for us. On Sunday against the Geraldton Buccaneers we were extremely privileged to have the West Australian Premier Mr. Mark McGowan in attendance. The Premier took some time out of his busy schedule to talk to the Buccs and Wolves players and also shot some hoops with the Wolves pre-game. We were also pleased to host the Minister for Sport, Mick Murray and the State Member for Joondalup Emily Hamilton. We thank them for their support of community sport. Also, in attendance was Venues West CEO, Mr David Etherton and we thank him for stopping by to see the team. It was also great to see the Mayor of Joondalup, Hon. Albert Jacob in attendance at both home games. The Mayor is a huge Wolves fan and we love having him at the games. The game was also featured as the game of the round and live streamed by the West Australian newspaper. If you haven’t already, visit the West Australian website to find out how you can subscribe to watch the game of the round in the West Coast Classic each week. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff and volunteers that are involved in putting on a WCC game day. From door staff, ushers, cleaners, set up staff, scorers, statisticians, floor wipers and court announcers to camera operators and bar and merchandise staff. It takes an army of people to deliver the best game night experience in the league and I thank each and every one of you. Special mention to our Admin & Events Coordinator, Dani Pickett and Member Engagement Coordinator, Matt Rushmere for all the work you do in the lead up to each game. We are always on the look out for more staff to help us deliver a great game night experience so if you are willing to help please reach out to the WBA office staff. Please get behind both teams tonight and visit our merch stand for your latest Wolves apparel. The season is well and truly underway now with the group settling into the weekly training routine and increasing their standards week on week. Considering the short turn around from when training was allowed to when games started I’m really happy with the start of the season we have had. This week I want to congratulate Tim Rendulic and the exceptional job he did last week leading the team as Head Coach during the week at training and also during the game against Cockburn. These opportunities for Tim are really important for his development allowing him to spend the week “in the life of” being head coach. It’s made even harder having me in the background as an assistant, which can’t be easy as I’m a little rusty and no doubt said too much. Tim did a fantastic job and lead the team to an impressive victory against Cockburn and now has the perfect 100% record as a head coach, this is something we will do again later in the year and I look forward to watching him grow in the role and develop as a coach. Thank you to all of the players and the club for embracing this idea and allowing us to get Tim some exposure at this level. One of the amazing things this club has done in my time here is invest in it’s people and these opportunities are priceless to everyone involved. Another congratulations goes to a debutant from our last women’s home fixture in Laniesha Paddon, who really impacted with her time on the court and also had another opportunity on the weekend. It’s exciting to see some of the talent coming through our WABL program getting an opportunity in the West Coast Classic, we will have one or two more pop up during the year so keep your eyes on the program. This week we are hosting the undefeated Kalamunda Eastern Suns. Coach Knowles has an exciting young roster with a bunch of talent and has them playing really well at the moment. The return of Jessie Edwards has been massive for the suns with her being a consistent presence on both sides of the ball. Add to that the continued improvement of Jewel Williams, Georgia Adams and Emma Strelein as well as the experience of captain Rebecca Motroni and the Suns are a handful for any team in this league. The team has had a really good lead in to our first double header of the season and are looking forward to another couple of opportunities to build towards what we want to be. This week we have another double header after two tough games last week against the Cougars and Buccs. We came away with two wins after the Cougars pushed us to a hard fought win on Saturday and then we were able to beat a depleted Buccs team on Sunday. Tonight we play the Kalamunda Eastern Suns and tomorrow take on our cross town rivals the Warwick Senators. Tonight’s game will be a challenge for us as every game in this format is crucial in such a short season. Our next three games are on the road so it is important for us to take advantage of our home court before some difficult road games. The Suns have some talented players in Ryan Blanchett and Logan Viskovich and are supported by Carl Aylett, Brendan Dinardo, Cooper Lowe and SBL veteran Corey Easley. Their record possibly doesn’t reflect their talent level and they are definitely building a strong team for the future. Our senior players have been leading the way and I am really impressed with how they have adapted to this disrupted and shortened season. Seb, Tri, Maxi and Rob are proving why they are still some of the best players in the league. Lee Roberts and Lochy Cummings have fitted seamlessly into the group and it is like they have been playing together for years. Last week it was great to see the young guys get a chance to show us what they are capable of. Matt Teale continued to show is he ready to play at this level. Dan Vlahov hit the court again after a long period off due to injury and big Kade Muru made his debut and held his own. Country boy Archie Hall is also working his way in to senior basketball. I hope you enjoy the game tonight and we thank you for being the best fans in the league. If you can please head to Warwick tomorrow night to support us a we take on the Senators in what should be a fantastic game, we would really appreciate it.
