Comments about Garbage - Autechre

Kizshura

I never realised till now that it’s the same hills featured on the cover of Amber that are also on this cover, but put through a shredder type effect.

Peras

VLetrmx21 is one of the most beautiful ambient tunes ever made. So deep.

Gribandis

Any idea of a repress any time soon? . . . .

Blackseeker

I was wondering this too, It would be a shame to not repress the EP's alongside the 3 x LP re- presses. This on 180g audiophile plastic would be unreal.

Goltikree

Garbagemx one of the best electronic track ever done

Reemiel This is one of my favorite Autechre records, due mostly to the first track. This is not to say that the other three tracks are weak, but Garbagemx36 completely blows me away every time I put it on. One of the truly epic Autechre tracks, it clocks in at over 14 minutes. Many people would point to the fourth track, Vletrmx21, as the highlight of the record, but I would have to disagree. The fourth track is indeed beautiful, but essentially just a really good ambient track. The first track, however, is a different story. Garbagemx36 is the closest thing I can imagine to a work of musical surrealism. Much music is said to express certain feelings and emotions, but to me this track does more than that. It seems to conjure a whole subconscious landscape. To call it "atmospheric" would be an understatement. Indeed it's atmospheric, but also cohesive and distinct -- the painting of a picture straight from the minds of Booth, Brown, and their machines. Of course, that's all subjective, but it's not the only reason I love this track. For one thing, there's just lots of great programming: the bizarre trademark Autechre samples, dubby synths, and an excellent repetitive drum pattern. There are a lot of mysterious vocal events happening low in the mix (I'm not sure if they're actual vocal samples or synthesis/manipulation made to approximate speech dynamics). Whatever it is, it adds to the surrealism of the music. I honestly can't imagine how Autechre made these sounds, let alone managed to arrange them in such a beautiful way. One thing that really sets this track apart from some other great Autechre tracks is its structure. This is a tricky area within Autechre's work -- some of their tracks have a very structured layering of loops (particularly the stuff). Others have abrupt, distinct mutations (mostly their more recent work). Some of their tracks don't seem to develop much at all. Most Autechre tracks just layer or mutate, as if the overall composition and contrast of elements over time is not huge a concern. This tendency is made apparent in their live shows, where they simply assault the audience with fast, intense loops without much regard for high/low points, pacing, etc. Not so with Garbagemx36 -- it spans a long path of development while maintaining the repetitive structure that makes Autechre songs what they are. The numbers in the song titles refer to percentages of the total EP running time.

Nilasida

Whenever I listen to this track, there is a particular passage within it that conjures up a vision of a jungle with animals making primitive noises (the samples remind me of birds and reptiles i suppose). This jungle is very surreal, kind of a hybrid between primitive and scientifically contrived. I agree with you, that track is a wonderful thing alone. The rest is beautiful too.

DART-SKRIMER

This is still Autechre's finest moment for me.Classical music meets what i called at the time "ambient". Whenever i play this 12" i still drift off to my own little world. Utterly essential.
