9 Monarch Basketball 2006-07 2006-07 SEASON PREVIEW he Old Dominion Monarchs, winners of a school record 52 games the past two seasons, return three starters and nine lettermen includ- ing the CAA leader in assists/turnover ratio and one of the league’s top fi eld goal percent- age shooters. TheT Monarchs lost their top two scorers in All-CAA performers Alex Loughton and Isaiah Hunter. Loughton completed his career with 1,646 points and 952 rebounds. Seniors Drew Williamson & The two-time NABC All-District performer also earned Valdas Vasylius academic honors as well with a third team ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-American selection and NACDA All-American scholar. Hunter, a two-time All-CAA selection, fi nished his career with 1,425 career points. “What I observed in the off season was that our players were very intent on our program continuing on its present path. The names change, the roles change, but the quality of performer and performance should carry on, “said head coach Blaine Taylor. “While many of the pundits are placing a lot of attention on others in our conference, which I believe they deserve, Our program Senior John Morris and its following have created a situation where we will be a threat in virtually every way possible.” Heading ODU’s returnees are starters Drew Wil- liamson, Arnaud Dahi, Brian Henderson along with sixth man Valdas Vasylius, who started eight games last year. Williamson led the CAA in assist/turnover ratio each of the past two seasons. In the 2005 CAA tourna- ment he didn’t commit a turnover in the three CAA tournament games, which helped earn him All-Tourna- ment accolades. Last year Williamson again showed composure in crucial situations and hit big shots for the Monarchs which include the game winning buzzer beater against CAA rival and NCAA Final Four partici- pant George Mason. Dahi led the CAA in fi eld goal percentage in 2005 and ranked in the top ten of the league in that same category in ’06. The 6-7 Dahi also ranks in the league’s top ten in free throw percentage and blocked shots. He scored 25 against Wisconsin, 20 against Hofstra and per- formed the double-double in ODU’s NIT win at Colo- rado and against Northeastern. Dahi joined the 1,000 career point club last year in ODU’s NIT win at Hofstra and will enter his fi nal season with 1,019 points. Brian Henderson Brian Henderson came into his own last season with a career high 20 against Marist in the ESPN Bracket Bust- ers game, and 17 against CAA champion UNC Wilm- ington. He led ODU with a .395 three-point fi eld goal percentage. Valdas Vasylius has been a part-time starter for the
10 Old Dominion University Monarchs since his freshman year. He scored in dou- ble fi gures 14 times last year, including 19 in the win over Georgia, 18 against UAB and 21 against William and Mary. Vasylius played for his Lithuanian national team this summer. The Monarchs will be counting heavily on re- turnees Sam Harris, Abdi Lidonde, Jonathan Adams, Brandon Johnson and John Morris for added depth. The 7-3 Sam Harris, a member of the Australian under-21 team had solid outings for the Monarchs during their NIT tournament run. Lidonde was a big spark plug for ODU off the bench which included 12 points against James Madison and 11 against William and Mary. Johnson has been a key to the Monarchs pressure defense the past two seasons. He scored 12 against Hofstra and dished out ten assists against Towson, and averaged over a steal per game. Morris stepped in and made some big plays for the Monarchs as did Jonathan Adams, who started three games and played solid defense as a freshman. The Monarchs added another outstanding recruiting class in 6-2 guard Marsharee Neely from Greensboro, NC, (North Carolina 4A Player of the Year); 6-8 forward Keyon Carter from Riviera Beach, FL, (the Palm Beach County rebound champion); 6-9 forward Gerald Lee from Uusikaupunki, Finland, (a member of the Finnish under-20 national squad); and 6-7 forward Frank Hassell from nearby Chesapeake, VA(an All-District and All-region selection). “There’s a lot of work ahead,” said Taylor. “We may take a few lumps, but in the long haul, this groups experiences the last two years will hopefully fuel a push through February, March and beyond.” ODU will have another ambitious schedule, opening the season hosting the Cox Communica- tions Classic which includes Clemson, coached by former ODU All-American and coach Oliver Purnell, Senior Arnaud Dahi Monmouth who competed in the NCAA’s last year from the Northeast Conference and Arkansas State Coliseum, March 2-5. from the Sun Belt.
