  • Beyoncé, Santana, and Rhythm As a Representation of People and Place Overview
BEYONCÉ, SANTANA, AND RHYTHM AS A REPRESENTATION OF PEOPLE AND PLACE OVERVIEW ESSENTIAL QUESTION How does “the beat” of popular music reflect the histories of multiethnic populations and places? OVERVIEW At different times in American history, rhythm has been a contested issue. Within the cultural “melting pot” of the nation, both the way people feel rhythms and musical meter and the instruments they use to express them have sometimes been interpreted as “dangerous.” During the years in which slavery was a part of American life, the ships that crossed the Atlantic Ocean en route to the Americas, ships carrying African slaves, also brought the music and dance traditions of these people. Many of these traditions were rich with rhythmic complexity. Even today the rhythms we think of as “the beat” in popular music carry traces of the West African music brought to the Americas by slaves, and nearly all of the music we hear now is the result of musical and cultural mixing between the many ethnic populations that have cohabited here since. Music has always been a meeting place, sometimes challenging the “official” systems of social organization. When the slave trade was in practice, each colony and country responded differently to the cultural practices of the forced labor that drove their economies. In Cuba, slaves were permitted to gather at specific times. In these communal moments music and dance traditions from throughout West Africa were both maintained and adapted to their new home. Slaves identified as having musical talent were also required to learn Spanish dance music and perform for plantation owners.

When it came time to make her exhilarating second album “Teenage Dream,” Katy found herself increasingly drawn back home to Santa Barbara, Calif. • Learning Rhythm Through Gospel
Learning Rhythm through Gospel OVERVIEW ESSENTIAL QUESTION How can Gospel music help students identify the musical concepts of beat, meter, backbeat, subdivision, and syncopation? OVERVIEW Popular music today would sound very different without the influence of Gospel. From Little Richard to Sister Rosetta Tharpe to Mavis Staples to Sam Cooke, many of the musicians Photo: Camilo J. Vergara who helped develop Rock and Roll and Rhythm and Blues were first influenced by the music from churches. And the Gospel-to-pop connection is not a thing of the past—the sound of church can still be heard in everything from Beyoncé to Chance the Rapper. But the connection between Gospel and popular music isn’t a one way street: Gospel has also long been influenced by secular music. In the 18th and 19th centuries, traveling preachers would regularly evangelize to the public through days-long “camp meetings.” To make these meetings engaging, the preachers would encourage the audience to sing popular songs of the day, set to religious lyrics. Since then, Gospel composers have regularly drawn upon secular sources in creating new hymns, and many had careers in both religious and secular music. For example, Thomas Dorsey, considered by many to be the “Father of Gospel Music,” also regularly toured with popular blues musician Ma Rainey. Perhaps more than anything else, what keeps the strands of Gospel and popular music so closely intertwined is the rhythms. A strong, syncopated beat is essential to both styles. This rhythmic influence can be traced as far back as the 1600s, when slaves sang spirituals and ring shouts while clapping and stomping the West African rhythms of their heritage.

5/6/12 Stargate and Ester Dean, Making Music Hits : The New Yorker ONWARD AND UPWARD WITH THE ARTS THE SONG MACHINE The hitmakers behind Rihanna. by John Seabrook MARCH 26, 2012 n a mild Monday afternoon in midJanuary, Ester Dean, a songwriter Oand vocalist, arrived at Roc the Mic Studios, on West Twentyseventh Street in Manhattan, for the first of five days of songwriting sessions. Her engineer, Aubry Delaine, whom she calls Big Juice, accompanied her. Dean picked up an iced coffee at a Starbucks on Seventh Avenue, took the elevator up to Roc the Mic, and passed through a lounge that had a pool table covered in taupecolored felt. Two sets of soundproofed doors led to the control room, a windowless cockpit that might have been the flight deck of a spaceship. Tor Hermansen and Mikkel Eriksen, the team of Norwegian writer producers professionally known as Stargate, were waiting there for Dean. Both are tall and skinny ectomorphs with pale shaved heads who would not look out of place in a “Matrix” movie. Dean, who is black, is neither skinny nor tall; she reached up to give them big hugs, which is how she greets Ester Dean, center, has written smash almost everyone. They chatted for a while.
