Elisabeth Von Trapp, world-renowned singer and granddaughter of the Von who inspired “,” will be performing at Holy Innocents on Valentine’s Day, Thursday, February 14th at 7:00 p.m. The free hour-long concert will be performed in the church sanctuary.

Singing professionally since childhood, Elisabeth has enthralled audiences from European cathedrals to Washington’s National Cathedral, to the Kennedy Center, and to hundreds of performance halls and churches across the United States. She has been the featured musician at the last two Episcopal General Conventions.

Elisabeth was born and raised in Vermont and is the granddaughter of the legendary Maria and Baron von Trapp, whose story inspired the “The Sound of Music.” She has carried on the legacy of the internationally renowned Trapp Family Singers. Building on her family’s passion for music, she has created her own artistic style, ethereal, earthy, delicate, and powerful. Her voice has been likened to Judy Collins and Loreena McKennitt. Critics have called her voice “hauntingly clear,” “joyfully expressive,” and “simply beautiful.”

Elisabeth’s concert repertoire ranges from Bach to Broadway, Schubert to Sting, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Favorite Things” and “Edelweiss,” soaring gospel tunes, and pop classics. Our own choir including special guest Don Lowery will join her at the end of her concert for two well known favorites.

The concert is a special project of the Vestry’s Evangelism Committee in hopes of promoting fellowship within our own church and throughout the Henderson community. Your support will help to insure its success!

February 2013

The Deacon’s Bench If you have never read this book, you should as it contains by the Rev. Harrel Johnson a great deal of spiritual guidance that is even applicable to our lives in this modern world of today.

If you were brave enough to risk the threat of the black ice on this past Sunday morning then you know that the Rector, your delegates, and I have just returned from our Diocesean annual convention in Winston/Salem. I always enjoy this time, with all of its pageantry and abundance of positivism I also enjoy seeing and reconnecting with my Dea- con Friends and members of past parishes and other friends that I have made during my journey through life in the Church.

Bishop Curry’s address to the convention was of course absolutely phenomenal as it was, when he visited us during his annual visitation the week before. The election of the new Suffagran Bishop was a milepost for the Diocese but Anne Hodges-Copple (current rector of St. Luke’s, Durham) was not any real surprise.

I have been to Convention but I didn’t go to Galilee! I won’t be purifying my self for Lent but I will go anyway. In the front of the book that Don gave me is a scripture quote from the st 21 Chapter of John “Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, we will go with you.” I believe that I will go to Galilee and go fishing. Who will go with me?

“Thanks be to God” that the great procession to Galilee and the outdoor celebration of the Eucharist was cancelled due to the weather. We processed and celebrated anyway although it was inside the convention center.
