Dexter Grange No. 155 and Ripley Grange No. 462 will give up their charters and turn their halls over to the Maine state organization. *D]HWWH “We held on as long as we could, but we are down to six members and we can’t keep up with an aging building,” said Ted Nokes, the current master of the Dexter Grange. According to the rules of the national organization, a subordinate grange must have a minimum of 13 members – nine men and four women – to retain its charter. CUSTOM STONEWALLS AND PATIOS “We probably could have gotten a waiver to stay open, but things didn’t look very promising,” Nokes said. Dexter Grange was chartered in 1877 and at one time, was the “All your hardscaping needs...” largest building in the community next to the original town hall. The Grange has three tenants in its building: Scavenger’s secondhand We specialize in Maine stone. $)7(530 store, a barber shop and a small meeting area for the Dexter Club. “As far as we know, the status of our tenants won’t change,” Nokes said. Don’t let a Nokes said that he still believes in the organization and said that “if the right situation came along, I’d considering joining another broken computer stop you. Dexter Grange.” Dottie Hutchins is one of the last remaining members of Ripley Municipal Grange and said that the closure was inevitable. “People weren’t Golf Course turning out for meetings, so we weren’t able to put on suppers and Dr. Dan other functions,” she said. “So we haven’t had any source of income for 35 Sunrise Ave., Dexter a while. Young people are more into technology than tradition.” 924-6477 Hutchins has been a Grange member for 70 years, but said that 564.0150 she’s undecided whether she’ll transfer her membership. “I have to think about it for a while,” she said. The Maine State Grange was organized in Lewiston in 1874; and by the end of the fi rst year, there were 64 Granges and approximately 2,000 members By 1907, the numbers accelerated to 419 Granges and 55,000 members. But as the number of Maine farms dwindled over the decades, so did interest in the Grange. Now, there are only about 4,000 members statewide, although there are many Granges in the Penquis region like Valley in North Guilford, Garland, Parkman and Wayside that are still active. Dave Pearson is master of Wayside Grange in North and said that his organization is in good shape, but it still has its challenges. “We also have an old building to take care of, and that can be expensive,” Pearson said. Pearson said that a local Grange “was once the central focus of the community when there were many working farms in the area. But the world has changed.” Wayside Grange holds many public functions such as musical entertainment and dinners which brings in revenue and keeps the organization in the public eye. But as a fraternal order, members are required to be formally initiated and Pearson said that young people today “have no use for rituals. They think there’s something sinister about them. But it’s just like playing a part in a stage play. Personally, I like the tradition, but I’m probably a rarity.” Efforts to reach Grange State Master Rick Grotton for comment were unsuccessful.

In view of the fact that the school budget is up 55% in the last fi ve years at a time of declining enrollment, maybe the 9:50 am Dexter Skating Rink mystery is that anyone voted for it at all. But more mysterious than anything is the fact that no member of the school board has stood up against these proceedings. Our area has still not recovered from the great recession of 2008. And there are near DROP OFF TIME LOCATION 100 abandoned homes in Guilford alone. A school board that recommends double-digit increases in 2:10 pm Dexter Skating Rink property taxes every year is clearly in some other reality. Other school boards in Maine appear to have been taken hostage by the Administration. When the administration always 3:00 pm Garland Town Office has the wrong answer the Administration must go. This is the job the school board was elected to do. And 3:10 pm Exeter Town Office the taxpayers have to have a clear objective - I suggest that we cancel the 16 to 19% increase projected for this year and We recover the 5% or more increase in last year’s budget before we approve this year’s budget.
