  • Ron Arnst's HMG Course Collection Summaries
HISTORY MAKER GOLF Championship Golf Game • Course Summaries Course Collection ONE Blackjack GC, Las Vegas NV / based on TPC SUMMERLIN TPC Summerlin’s layout, carved from a magnificent swath of rugged desert terrain by renowned golf course architect Bobby Weed, provides a good reference for the Blackjack GC. TPC Summerlin’s lush bentgrass greens, numerous water features and an abundance of pine trees all contrast dramatically with undisturbed desert washes. The course features four closing holes that deliver top flight golf drama. The final charge begins with the par 4, 15th hole – a drivable par 4 that will temp most players. If the tee shot misses the green, an “up and down” birdie is possible, but not easy, due to the severely elevated and undulated green – which is surrounded by five bunkers that regularly attract stray tee shots. The 16th hole is a relatively downhill par-5 that is reachable with two good shots. The green is guarded by water short of the green, and bunkers beyond. Only a mid-iron will be necessary for the second shot, with a birdie almost a certainty. A challenging and un-nerving par-3, the 17th hole plays downhill with the green guarded closely by a lake on the left and by bunkers on the right. Par is good score and birdies are rare, should players need to make up ground. The 18th is a well-designed and strategic finishing hole which moves right to left off the tee. The green is protected on the left by a lake. An aggressive tee shot with the driver can leave the player just a short iron to a very deep green from front to back.

  • Golf Is Once Again a Family Affair at the 2020 Champion of Champions
GOLF IS ONCE AGAIN A FAMILY AFFAIR AT THE 2020 CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS Park Ridge, Illinois, October 8, 2020 By Dennis LaLiberty Patrick Keegan of Morris Country Club fashioned a steady one over par round to earn a slim but solid victory in the Richard E. Peterson Champion of Champions tournament played at Park Ridge Country Club. There was plenty of competition as 72 golfers stepped up to the first tee, with three competitors finishing at two over par, just one stroke behind Keegan, who spent a nervous 60 minutes as leader in the clubhouse while his closest competitors were still out on the course. Keegan designed his game plan after one practice round the previous Sunday and executed it with workmanlike consistency. As so often happens, it was the Park Ridge course’s “Last Mile,” the four finishing holes, which proved decisive. The 18th hole did take its toll on Keegan, who came to the tee at even par and left at one over after his third bogey in a round that featured birdies at #’s 2 and 13, with the previous two bogies coming at #’s 7 and 10. For most of the day it looked as if Brian Hickey of Edgewood Valley Country Club might become the second lefthander to win since Park Ridge became the host club, but the final two holes proved his undoing. Hickey came to #17 at one under par and left #18 at two over after a double at #17 and bogey at #18. Hickey’s playing partner, Brian Barrett of Royal Melbourne entered the “Last Mile” at plus one, but recorded bogey at #15, then just missed a redeeming 6 footer for birdie at #16, which, after he played the last two holes in regulation, produced his two over round.

West Virginia Open History Compiled by Bob Baker 1933: Johnny Javins, the pro at Edgewood Country Club in Charleston, defeated pro I. C. ""Rocky''' Schorr of Bluefield Country Club in an 18-hole playoff at Kanawha Country Club in South Charleston to win the first West Virginia Open. Javins shot a 76 in the playoff while Schorr had an 82. They agreed to split first and second place money but Javins got the trophy donated by George C. Weimer of St. Albans. Javins and Schorr had tied after 72 holes of medal play with 302 scores. Schorr held a five-stroke lead over the field and an 11-stroke edge over Javins after two rounds but faltered on the second 36-hole day. Schorr's troubles started when he took a nine on the par-four third hole, needing five strokes to get out of a trap. Javins began his comeback with a 69 in the third round to pick up all 11 strokes on Schorr. The West Virginia Professional Golfers Association was formed in a meeting a month before the tournament, with Schorr the first president. Leaders by rounds: first, Schorr 72, by one; second, Schorr 147, by five; third, Javins and Schorr, 227s. Johnny Javins, Charleston 80-78-69-75--302 I. C.
