One of the most unique and intriguing places in the Watrous area has been beam- ing programs over the airwaves for decades. While there are no on-air personalities that broadcast out of the Canadian Broadcast- ing Corporation’s CBK Radio facility east of Watrous, there is still one person who visits on a frequent basis. After a lifelong fascination with the fa- cility and its inner workings, local resident Dwight Kornelsen did not waste any time grabbing the job as transmitter site mon- itor of the CBC’s CBK building when the position became available in 1993. “I was always interested and more curi- ous about the building,” said Kornelsen who would drive by it as a kid. “There would al- ways be lights on in the place. You could see the red doors of the transmitter from the road. You didn’t know what it was all about and it was always interesting and mysterious.” After Watrous resident Orrin McIntosh retired as technician, then held the job as monitor before Kornelsen, he provided the latter an opportunity to see what all went on inside the facility. “This place got me more interested in radio. I got into HAM (amateur) radio prob- ably about the same time I started my mon- itor job here.” After McIntosh stepped away, Kornelsen was more than happy to fi ll in and has done so since. Kornelsen is tasked with checking on the facility at least twice a month where he does metre readings of the transmitter O CCanadaanada and visual checks to see if everything is TThehe mmajesticajestic rreded aandnd wwhitehite ccouldould bbee sseeneen aacrosscross tthehe ccountryountry aandnd functioning properly.
