Naudin, Miconia rigidiuscula Cogn. e Miconia sellowiana Naudin. Palavras-chaves: Anatomia da madeira, Miconia, Melastomataceae ABSTRACT The wood anatomy of Miconia cabussu Hoehne, Miconia cinnamomifolia (DC.) Naudin, Miconia rigidiuscula Cogn. and Miconia sellowiana Naudin is described. The four species show distinct growth rings; solitary and multiples vessels; simple perforated plates; small, alternate and vestured intervessel pits; paratracheal scanty axial parenchyma; rays are composed by square, upright and few procumbent cells; parenchyma-like fibre; septate and gelatinous fibres. The useful characteristics for separation the species are: growth rings boundaries in M. cabussu and M. sellowiana; vascular tracheids present in M. cabussu; vessel-ray pits in M. rigidiuscula and parenchyma-like fibres arrangement in M. cinnamomifolia. The shape of the intervessel pits and the ray width separate the species into two groups: one includes M. cabussu and M. cinnamomifolia, the other group includes M. rigidiuscula and M. sellowiana. Dendrograms done in the cluster analysis represent these groups. Galán Díaz1, K. Bauters2,3, L. Rabarivola4, M. Xanthos5, P. Goetghebeur3, I. Larridon3,5 Key words Abstract A taxonomic revision of the genus Scleria (Cyperoideae, Cyperaceae) in Madagascar is presented. Herbarium specimens have been examined and 422 identified to species level. Our results recognise 25 species conservation of Scleria from Madagascar, plus an additional heterotypic variety. Eight species are endemic to Madagascar, two Cyperaceae are near endemic, eight taxa are also found on mainland Africa, and eight are widespread tropical taxa. Scleria endemic species achtenii is reported from Madagascar for the first time, and S. rosea is accepted at species level instead of being identification key considered as a synonym of S. trialata. Distribution maps, conservation assessments, and notes on synonymy, Madagascar ecology and ethnobotany are provided. Fourty-seven names are typified. Three rare endemic species: S. andrin- revision gitrensis, S. madagascariensis and S. perpusilla, are assessed as threatened; and a recently described species, Scleria S. ankaratrensis, is indicated as Data Deficient. The most species-rich infrageneric taxa, sections Hypoporum, Abortivae and Foveolidia include 18 taxa in total, and showed strong differences in habitat preference. (Cyperaceae) and Utricularia minor L. (Lentibulariaceae). Both taxa are documented from The Nature Conservancy’s Shut-in Mountain Fens Preserve in Shannon County, within the Ozark Highlands ecoregion of southeastern Missouri. KEY WORDS : Cyperaceae, Lentibulariaceae, Cladium , Utricularia , Missouri, Shannon County Shut-in Mountain Fens Preserve is a 520-acre (210 ha) Nature Conservancy preserve characterized by rugged igneous knobs of Precambrian rhyolitic ash flows overlain by deep beds of dissected Ordovician dolomite. Below the small exposed igneous glade at the summit of Shut-in Mountain, the site is primarily oak-hickory woodland, with a minor component of shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata ). Total relief within the preserve is 100 meters. The geology and topography create several areas of permanent minerotrophic groundwater discharge along Wildcat Hollow, the small, northeast-trending, intermittently flowing drainage that passes through the site. These phreatic discharges range from numerous small seepage areas of a few square meters to three fens ranging up to 1.0 ac (0.4 ha).

A study on the leaf anatomy of Cordiera sessilis (Rubiaceae), a native medicinal shrub from Brazilian Cerrado was carried out to identify features that may be useful in species recognition. Leaves were collected, fixed and processed by usual techniques, and studied by light and electron microscopy. Quantitative analyzes of stomata and trichomes were performed. In addition to the typical anatomical characteristics of Rubiaceae leaves, two types of vascular patterns were identified in the petiole: in distal part, the vascular system is arranged cylindrically surrounded by sclerenchyma sheath and in proximal part the vascular system is arranged in U-shape coupled to sclerified cells.

Plant Biodiversity Science, Discovery, and Conservation: Case Studies from Australasia and the Pacific Craig Costion School of Earth and Environmental Sciences Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology University of Adelaide Adelaide, SA 5005 Thesis by publication submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology July 2011 ABSTRACT This thesis advances plant biodiversity knowledge in three separate bioregions, Micronesia, the Queensland Wet Tropics, and South Australia. A systematic treatment of the endemic flora of Micronesia is presented for the first time thus advancing alpha taxonomy for the Micronesia-Polynesia biodiversity hotspot region. The recognized species boundaries are used in combination with all known botanical collections as a basis for assessing the degree of threat for the endemic plants of the Palau archipelago located at the western most edge of Micronesia’s Caroline Islands. A preliminary assessment is conducted utilizing the IUCN red list Criteria followed by a new proposed alternative methodology that enables a degree of threat to be established utilizing existing data. Historical records and archaeological evidence are reviewed to establish the minimum extent of deforestation on the islands of Palau since the arrival of humans. This enabled a quantification of population declines of the majority of plants endemic to the archipelago. In the state of South Australia, the importance of establishing concepts of endemism is emphasized even further. A thorough scientific assessment is presented on the state’s proposed biological corridor reserve network. The report highlights the exclusion from the reserve system of one of the state’s most important hotspots of plant endemism that is highly threatened from habitat fragmentation and promotes the use of biodiversity indices to guide conservation priorities in setting up reserve networks.

  • A SURVEY of the SYSTEMATIC WOOD ANATOMY of the RUBIACEAE by Steven Jansen1, Elmar Robbrecht2, Hans Beeckman3 & Erik Smets1
IAWA Journal, Vol. 23 (1), 2002: 1–67 A SURVEY OF THE SYSTEMATIC WOOD ANATOMY OF THE RUBIACEAE by Steven Jansen1, Elmar Robbrecht2, Hans Beeckman3 & Erik Smets1 SUMMARY Recent insight in the phylogeny of the Rubiaceae, mainly based on macromolecular data, agrees better with wood anatomical diversity patterns than previous subdivisions of the family. The two main types of secondary xylem that occur in Rubiaceae show general consistency in their distribution within clades. Wood anatomical characters, espe- cially the fibre type and axial parenchyma distribution, have indeed good taxonomic value in the family. Nevertheless, the application of wood anatomical data in Rubiaceae is more useful in confirming or negating already proposed relationships rather than postulating new affinities for problematic taxa. The wood characterised by fibre-tracheids (type I) is most common, while type II with septate libriform fibres is restricted to some tribes in all three subfamilies. Mineral inclusions in wood also provide valuable information with respect to systematic re- lationships. Key words: Rubiaceae, systematic wood anatomy, classification, phylo- geny, mineral inclusions INTRODUCTION The systematic wood anatomy of the Rubiaceae has recently been investigated by us and has already resulted in contributions on several subgroups of the family (Jansen et al. 1996, 1997a, b, 1999, 2001; Lens et al. 2000). The present contribution aims to extend the wood anatomical observations to the entire family, surveying the second- ary xylem of all woody tribes on the basis of literature data and original observations. Although Koek-Noorman contributed a series of wood anatomical studies to the Rubiaceae in the 1970ʼs, there are two principal reasons to present a new and com- prehensive overview on the wood anatomical variation.

  • The Ecology of Trees in the Tropical Rain Forest
This page intentionally left blank The Ecology of Trees in the Tropical Rain Forest Current knowledge of the ecology of tropical rain-forest trees is limited, with detailed information available for perhaps only a few hundred of the many thousands of species that occur. Yet a good understanding of the trees is essential to unravelling the workings of the forest itself. This book aims to summarise contemporary understanding of the ecology of tropical rain-forest trees. The emphasis is on comparative ecology, an approach that can help to identify possible adaptive trends and evolutionary constraints and which may also lead to a workable ecological classification for tree species, conceptually simplifying the rain-forest community and making it more amenable to analysis. The organisation of the book follows the life cycle of a tree, starting with the mature tree, moving on to reproduction and then considering seed germi- nation and growth to maturity. Topics covered therefore include structure and physiology, population biology, reproductive biology and regeneration. The book concludes with a critical analysis of ecological classification systems for tree species in the tropical rain forest. IAN TURNERhas considerable first-hand experience of the tropical rain forests of South-East Asia, having lived and worked in the region for more than a decade. After graduating from Oxford University, he took up a lecturing post at the National University of Singapore and is currently Assistant Director of the Singapore Botanic Gardens. He has also spent time at Harvard University as Bullard Fellow, and at Kyoto University as Guest Professor in the Center for Ecological Research.
