Ministry of Tourism Acnielsen ORG-MARG Executive Summary Ministry of Tourism ACNielsen ORG-MARG Executive Summary 1. Tourism in Uttaranchal Uttaranchal became the 27th state of India on November 9, 2000. It borders Tibet in the north-east and Nepal to the south-east, while its neighboring states are Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Uttaranchal is a region of outstanding natural beauty. The high Himalayan ranges and glaciers cover most of the northern parts of the state, while the lower reaches are densely forested. The unique Himalayan ecosystem plays host to a large number of animals (including bharal, snow leopards, leopards and tigers), plants and rare herbs. Two of India's mightiest rivers, the Ganga and the Yamuna take birth in the glaciers of Uttaranchal, and are fed by innumerable lakes, glacial melts and streams in the region. The tourism industry is a major contributor to the economy of Uttaranchal, with the Raj era hill-stations at Mussorie, Almora, Ranikhet and Nainital being some of the most frequented destinations. To this region also belong some of the holiest Hindu shrines, and for almost 2000 years now pilgrims have been visiting the temples at Haridwar, Rishikesh, Badrinath and Kedarnath in the hope of salvation and purification from sin. Recent developments in the region include initiatives by the state government to capitalize on the burgeoning visitor trade. The state also plays host to some of the worst conceived big- dam projects in India such as the monstrously large Tehri dam on the Bhagirathi-Bhilangana Rivers. Ministry of Tourism, Government of India initiated pilot surveys in ten states including Uttaranchal state on a plan to outsource collection activity of tourism statistics for the different states. ACNielsen ORG-MARG Pvt. Ltd. was entrusted with collection of tourism statistics for the State of Uttaranchal. The pilot survey was for a period of 12 months with the purpose to gain experience for future surveys. CHANDRASHILA PEAK CLIMB ‐ CHOPTA, TUNGNATH, DEORIATAL TREK NATURE OF TRIP Trekking LOCATION Garhwal Himalayas, Uttarakhand DURATION 5 Days (Haridwar ‐ Haridwar) TREKKING DAYS 3 Days MAXIMUM ALTITUDE Chandrashila peak summit (4000m) GRADE Moderate SEASON Sep‐Nov (in winters, Dec‐Mar, we run snow treks on this trail) ACCOMODATION Alpine Camping ‐ 2 Nights Hotel/Eco lodge ‐ 2 Nights GROUP SIZE Maximum of 15 persons ...We welcome you to join us on this memorable trip to the Himalayas BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE CLIMB & THE TREK If one is looking at a short 5‐day trek in the Himalayas then look no further. This is one of the most enchanting short treks and lies in the Garhwal region of Himalayas. This hike is in a protected area and hence there are minimal signs of civilization and abundance of flora & fauna, which adds to the beauty of the place. In the first leg of the trek we hike up to Deoriatal. This is a beautiful lake at an altitude of 2438 m and has captivating surroundings with forests all around. The Chaukhamba peak feels like it is an arm’s length away and the reflection of the mighty peak in the crystal clear waters of the lake creates a beautiful effect. The story associated with this scenic place is that when the Pandavas were in exile and were hiding from the Kaurava king, Duryodhan, they stopped nearby for a rest. When their mother Kunti felt thirsty, one by one four of her sons went to fetch water from this lake but died, as they could not answer the question put forth to them by the Yaksha Devta who resided here.
