CWA BERRY RSL SUB-BRANCH Part of the CWA charter is outreach work in the community and to this end Berry CWA members have started to work with Nowra SALT ministries to reach out to those in need. Members will be involved with cooking meals each month and collecting non perishable food and warm clothing during winter. Members are excited to be involved in this new venture and community members are encouraged to drop off clothing items to our rooms in Victoria Street, Berry. CWA Awareness Week will be held from September 6-13 this year with a focus on community discus- sion, policy debate and renewed media spotlight on domestic violence. RED CROSS Red Cross members met on 3rd August and celebrated the branch’s July birthday with a cake. The branch’s birthday had also been celebrated with a lunch at Pelican Rocks Café at . Thanks to Jenny Edwards for organising the lunch and Gloria Leonard for our decorations and surprise gifts. Thanks also to the members who offered to car pool. WHY WALKING IS THE MOST UNDERRATED FORM OF EXERCISE Walking is the easiest and most eco- nomical form of exercise to improve or maintain your physical and mental health. Walking for 30 minutes a day can increase your cardiorespiratory health, improve bone mineral density, alleviates symptoms of depression and fatigue, reduce the risk of some cancers, and the likelihood of developing type two diabetes. Unlike other forms of physical activity, walking is free and doesn’t require any special training or equipment! It can be performed at any time of the day and can be self- paced. Physical activity doesn’t have to be strenuous or be performed for long durations to see improvements in your health. A 2007 study showed performing low level of exercise for 75 minutes a week significantly improved their fitness levels when compared to the group of partici- pants who performed nothing. Additionally, walking isn’t just for improving your cardiovascular health but is an effective strategy for managing chronic lower back pain. All adults should aim to accumulate 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week or 30 minutes on five days. If you don’t have time or can’t walk for 30 min- utes, try breaking your walking into three different ses- sions of 10-minute walks. If you are someone who already does this, increasing the pace of your walk is an effective strategy to see further improvements in your health. Remember something is better than nothing (and more is even better). If you are unsure or currently not physi- cally active, starting with 10 minutes and then gradually increasing it to the recommended amount is an easy strat- egy. If you have been diagnosed with heart disease or have a chronic health condition, it is important to speak to your GP or exercise physiologist to learn how to safely build up your physical activity. WILDLIFE WARRIORS bombo

Eastern Freetail Microbat photos supplied by Trista Kyriakou We have a fabulous group of wildlife rescuers and car- CURTAINS ers in Shoalhaven Heads including Erin, Lindsay, Sally, myself and Trish. Recently, with the vast number of renovations going on in the Shoalhaven, our rescuers have been called to collect wildlife trapped in walls, ceilings or elsewhere. It is wonderful that people care enough to call our rescue hotline. Recently, Trish spent many hours in Kangaroo Valley collecting trapped microbats, the consumers of insects in BLINDS the ecosystem. She rescued 11 endangered microbats trapped in a wall which was being sealed up. If WRSC had not received the call, they would have been entombed. Trish had to remove the insulation from a small hole in the wall in order to find and then free the animals. It was tedious work which required a gentle touch. The cold, hungry and dehydrated bats were then trans- ported to the Shoalhaven Bat Clinic on a little heat pad. They were placed in a humidicrib by Janine, the bat co- AWNINGS ordinator. She will feed them mealworms and hydrate them before transfer to the tireless Trista for the remainder of their care. Our rescuers and carers are wildlife warriors. They work long hours, have huge hearts and suffer emotionally when an animal passes. They always need community support in their clinics. If you find injured or trapped wildlife, please contact Wildlife Rescue South Coast (WRSC) on 0418 427 214. Would you like to become a volunteer with us? C A FAMILY FAVOURITE AND FOR GOOD REASON E U ISI N There are some favourite meals we love so much and talk up so often, we have to make them again and again. This happened recently when we were talking so enthusiastically about last night’s dinner, our visitor challenged us to repeat it for her. We didn’t need a second invitation. Another reason this is a go-to for us is the cost. You’d can make enough to feed an army for less than $20. If you don’t want the heat from the cayenne pepper, a teaspoon of paprika is great and adds a bit of colour. We prefer the paprika and the cayenne now. Spoon remainder of marinade over chicken and pota- toes. Place in preheated oven. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Toss chicken and potatoes, keeping chicken skin side up; continue baking until chicken is browned and cooked through, about 25 minutes more.
