Pedigree Report Pedigree Report Subject: HAGIA SOPHIA (AUS) Chestnut (sabino) colt DOB: 17/03/2010 Five generation inbreeding: Prince John 5m x 5m Sire: PAINTING FREEDOM (USA) Black (sabino) 2003 by Airdrie Apache x Playfull Devil by Playfellow Family 9-h: Nipisquit (GB) 1924 Five generation inbreeding: Bold Ruler 5m, 5f x 4m Unraced. A tall and imposing horse, Painting Freedom was sired by the well known coloured TB sire Airdrie Apache, in turn a son of Naevus – a Group One placed son of Mr Prospector and quite a successful sire in North America of 29 stakeswinners in all – these included dual G1 winner King Glorious, G1 placed The Barking Shark and several other top class gallopers including Green Perfume (Champion 2YO Germany) who was at stud in Australia from 2005 until his death in 2010. From fairly limited opportunities Green Perfume sired NZ G1 winning sprinter Beldessarini (out of a Northjet mare – the same cross Airdrie Apache is bred on) and four other stakeswinners. Airdrie Apache's dam Not Quite White, who contrary to her name was in fact a rare pure white TB, was a race winner producer and his dam a stakes producer. Not Quite White was sired by the champion miler Northjet, son Of Northfields. Northfield's half brother HABITAT by Sir Gaylord would sex balance that sire who is carried by Painting Freedom tail female – this would be an excellent pattern to introduce in matings for Hagia Sophia. Painting Freedom's grandsire Naevus is a member of the La Troienne family (1-s) through the great mare Striking and her daughter Batter Up. Batter Up was Striking's only foal by the sire Tom Fool. One of the very best crosses for Hagia Sophia, who carries linebreeding to Tom Fool daughters, will be the mighty BUCKPASSER. Buckpasser was sired by Tom Fool (thus sex balancing that sire) and out of Busanda, a three quarter sister to Striking. Batter Up was a half sibling to the stallion HITTING AWAY (by Ambiorix) and the mare GLAMOUR (by Nasrullah) who is ancestress of POKER by Round Table – the damsire of SEATTLE SLEW and LOMOND. These stallions carry some further AAAA+++ nicks for Hagia Sophia, especially Seattle Slew. Hitting Away is carried tail female by SNIPPETS (Tom Fool male line through Lunchtime) in company with MISTY DAY, a very close relative of Bold Lad the damsire of Naevus, and Eight Thirty who is duplicated in Hagia Sophia's pedigree as well. Therefore mares carrying Snippets are extremely desirable mates for him. Batter Up is ancestress of a very successful female line in Australia through her G1 QLD Oaks/Derby winning great grand daughter Bravery – Bravery's daughter Valourina by Snippets foaled the champion juvenile filly Media to Gilded Time, and Wakeful Stakes winner Timbourina to Timber Country. Her G1 placed son Cardinal Virtue by Elusive Quality entered stud in 2011 in Western Australia. Daughters of this young sire would be well worth seeking out for Hagia Sophia. The Mr Prospector son WOODMAN descends from Glamour and is out of a Buckpasser mare giving him inbreeding to the La Troienne tribe. He would be best accessed for Hagia Sophia by using mares who carry MORE THAN READY - a stallion who is quite simply a superb pedigree match on all levels. Any La Troienne blood at all will be a plus for Hagia Sophia as a breeding stallion but some other particularly desirable avenues to pursue would be BOUCHER (Eg via SHOW A HEART), JET ACTION ( especially via SEATTLE SLEW) and MR BUSHER (carried by Hagia Sophia's dam Pretzel - he could be accessed through EL GRAN SENOR, PHONE TRICK and most importantly via REDOUTE'S CHOICE, HURRICANE SKY, UMATILLA and other Best In Show family stallions, of which there are many ) - also FRANCIS S especially via OGYGIAN, BIMELECH - and I want to especially mention accessing he blood of the great racemare ALLEZ FRANCE whose son AIR DE FRANCE stood at stud in Australia. I believe mares carrying Air De France would be a brilliant match for Hagia Sophia and strongly recommend seeking them out. Note that the dual G1 winning sprinter Bomber Bill was by Air De France out of a mare by Alzao, from the family of Painting Freedom and carrying the same Sir Ivor tail female cross, while his second damsire was Habituate by Habitat. Painting Freedom's dam Playfull Devil was a successful racemare (7 wins) Her third dam Protest, a multiple group winner, foaled the multiple group winning sprinter Indian King to the Bold Ruler son RAJA BABA. Protest's daughter No Test by Nodouble also produced a G2 winner to Raja Baba's son Well Decorated and a winning daughter to another of his sons Is It True. Painting Freedom hails from the illustrious female line of Minnewaska who most famously is the ancestress of the great filly How by Princequillo (G1 Kentucky Oaks) who in turn produced the great filly Pocahontas – dam of CHIEFTAIN, TOM ROLFE, WAR HAWK and - via her daughter Lady Rebecca by Sir Ivor – ALZAO (by Lyphard). Alzao's full sister Light Of Hope is ancestress of VRC Oaks winner Arapaho Miss (by Danehill Dancer) and top class filly Heartsareforlove ( placed in the 1000 Guineas and Wakeful Stakes) by HUSSONET – there's the Raja Baba cross again, as damsire of Hussonet, so successful with this family. Taking into account the fact that Hussonet traces to the same taproot mare (The Apple) as Dewan, the second damsire of Painting Freedom, and that Raja Baba is also by Dewan's sire and Painting Freedom's inbred ancestor Bold Ruler, and that Hussonet would contribute many further AAA+++ nicks to the table I very strongly recommend mares with HUSSONET blood as mates for Hagia Sophia. Alzao carries the same Sir Ivor cross on the female line as Painting Freedom himself so could be a very effective cross. Daughters of the G2 winning Hurricane Sky son HONALEE now at stud and G2 winning Encosta de Lago son DELZAO would be worth considering. Daughters of shuttle sire AUSSIE RULES by Danehill out of an Alzao mare would also sex balance both Fortino and Sicambre carried by Painting Freedom – a great cross for Hagia Sophia. This is also the family of important sires ACK ACK (by Battle Joined) and SHAM (by Pretense) Painting Freedom's dam Playfull Devil was sired by triple G1 winner Play Fellow (Sicambre male line) by On The Sly. On The Sly was foaled by the Prince John daughter Slick Trick, also ancestress of champion Australian racehorse INTERGAZE and FILIBERTO (carried by Red Ransom son FACE VALUE at stud in Australia). Hagia Sophia carries a double dose of this family blood as it is also the tribe of the Never Bend son TORSION who appears in his dam Pretzel. Torsion's full sister Fairway Fable is ancestress of champion A P Indy son BERNARDINI who shuttles to Australia. Daughters of all three of these stallions would have AAAA+++ nicks to complement Hagia Sophia and I would strongly recommend seeking them out for him. Rather than adding more Prince John to the mix in matings for Hagia Sophia, he would be much more likely to respond well to Prince John's close relation COSMIC BOMB - especially via his daughter Cosmah who produced the great sire HALO to Hail To Reason (additionally Hail To Reason appears through another great son Roberto on the tail female line of Airdrie Apache in Painting Freedom). Because Painting Freedom carries this distaff line to Roberto in his sire and also the Turn-To (Hail To Reason male line) / Prince John cross on his own damline via Sir Gaylord and Rash Prince, it is likely that stallions carrying Halo in a similar position on the pedigree chart will prove to be one of the more effective crosses for Hagia Sophia (eg FUSAICHI PEGASUS) Look also for sires inbred to Halo and Hail To Reason - two which particularly stand out as being superb pedigree matches in other aspects as well, are the very closely related STREET CRY and SHAMARDAL. See more discussion below for specific Halo lines especially suited to Hagia Sophia. Painting Freedom's inbreeding to Bold Ruler begs for the introduction of that stallion's great nick DAMASCUS into matings for Hagia Sophia – in particular via Roberto's son RED RANSOM, GILDED TIME, PRIVATE ACCOUNT, ACCIPITER and OGYGIAN. Dam: PRETZEL (USA) Chestnut (palomino) 2007 By G P 's Krugerrand x All Is Well by Thunder Puddles Five generation inbreeding: Prince John 4m x 4m Family 9-e : Fairy Gold (GB) 1896 Race Record: Unraced. Australian Breeding Record: 2010 colt Hagia Sophia by Painting Freedom USA Subject horse Not served in 2010 2011 served by Glacial Gold USA Pretzel is bred on an interesting cross, that of her great grandsire Jack Sprat over her damsire Thunder Puddles by Speak John. Jack Sprat and Speak John are very closely related stallions being both sired by Prince John and foaled by a grand daughter and daughter of the mare Folle Nuit respectively. Folle Nuit was by the Asterus son Astrophel from a daughter of Massine. Astrophel's full sister Dulce foaled Red Sunset to Solario. Red Sunset's daughters Crepuscule and Mieux Rouge were full sisters sired by the Massine son Mieuxce. Descendants of these two mares will have a fabulous genetic affinity with Hagia Sophia. They include: Ribotlight, CREPELLO (via Busted, Crest Of The Wave, Recalled, Soderini, Sugar Apple and especially AMYNTOR by Sir Gaylord and from Hagia Sophia's own family), Rangong and BETTER HONEY (by Honeyway, also from Pretzel's own female line) whose daughter Hondalae is the ancestress of champion sire FASTNET ROCK.
