KC had started hanging out at the new T.K. studios–a combination record ware- house and attic recording facility owned by R & B music legend Henry Stone. It was here, in the fullness of time, that he would rendezvous with his destiny–and his new musical collaborator, Rick Finch. “My biggest break was finding this little record company, this little recording studio,” he recalls. “I mean, there was Criteria in Miami, but you had to have money to get into Criteria to record a record. “T.K. was not like Criteria. Criteria was a recording studio where everybody from the Who’s Who list paid big money to record there. T.K. was this private thing. They were making their own records and distributing them.” Steve Alaimo, T.K. Productions’ vice president and head of A&R, years ago reflected on the origins of the south Florida recording industry in a newspaper interview. “Around 1970, Henry Stone and I decided we were going to start a record company in Florida,” Alaimo said. “And we just worked real hard and it worked. For one thing, the weather’s so good down here. L.A., New York... it’s more comfortable here. We built a little studio. We just added on and got bigger.” AT LEAST YOU’RE DOING WHAT YOU LOVE 39 The original name of the group, in fact, was KC And The Sunshine Junkanoo Band, which suggests that the band’s original charter, beyond its affiliations with R & B, tended toward a raucous, Caribbean sensibility. “In a way it was Early Disco, if you want to call it that,” says KC. -

As a guitarist, A & R man, engineer, producer, songwriting partner of Otis Redding, Eddie Floyd and a dozen others and founding member of both Booker T. and the MG’s and The Mar-Keys, Cropper was literally involved in virtually every record issued by Stax from the fall of 1961 through year end 1970.Such credits assure Cropper of an honored place in the soul music hall of fame. As co-writer of (Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay, Knock On Wood and In The Midnight Hour, Cropper is in line for immortality. Born on October 21, 1941 on a farm near Dora, Missouri, Steve Cropper moved with his family to Memphis at the age of nine. In Missouri he had been exposed to a wealth of country music and little else. In his adopted home, his thirsty ears amply drank of the fountain of Gospel, R & B and nascent Rock and Roll that thundered over the airwaves of both black and white Memphis radio. Bit by the music bug, Cropper acquired his first mail order guitar at the age of 14. Personal guitar heroes included Tal Farlow, Chuck Berry, Jimmy Reed, Chet Atkins, Lowman Pauling of the Five Royales and Billy Butler of the Bill Doggett band. -

Memphis Electronic Music: Finding Soul in the Age of Lifeless Machines Marcus Tate Rhodes College, Class of 2019 Rhodes Institut
Memphis Electronic Music: Finding Soul in the Age of Lifeless Machines Marcus Tate Rhodes College, Class of 2019 Rhodes Institute for Regional Studies Advisor: Dr. John Bass From a very young age, I had a very intimate relationship with music. I would always listen to many different genres like classical and film music to trap and R&B. After listening to so much music, it instantly grew my desire to create music myself. However, when you come from a poor family like myself, the options to create music are severely limited, even if you come from Memphis, the capital city of blues and soul. For a long time, many of the options to create music in Memphis could only be used by the people who could afford the instruments and instruction or people who knew others who could afford these things. However, there are many ways that people can use tools to create music, most of which can be done with little expense. What I wish to argue with my project is if it is possible to create inexpensive tools that create music, how Memphians create their own tools to create music, and should these tools can be called “musical instruments” like the music instruments we have today. Building a synthesizer will help me answer this question because it allows me to demonstrate that musical instruments can be made with little money and little experience in electronics. It also allows me to present how this synthesizer is just as much of tool for creating music as the musical instruments that we have today and present the history of how these present day musical instruments first began as just tools. -
The Relationship Between Fame and Fortune in Performance Related Careers with A
International Journal of Health and Economic Development, 6(2), 36-46, July 2020 36 The Relationship between Fame and Fortune in Performance Related Careers with a Shorter Life Expectancy due to Accidents, Addiction, Homicide and Suicide S. Eric Anderson, Ginny Sim La Sierra University, Riverside, California, USA [email protected] Abstract Around 92% of the US population dies from natural causes. However, only 49% of famous musician stars die from natural causes resulting in performance related careers being one of the most dangerous professions in the United States. According to this study, musicians were 20 times more likely to die from an addiction, four times more likely to die from an accident, six times more likely to die of homicide and four times more likely to die of suicide than the general population. Why do dangerous profession lists fail to include musicians in the high risk career list categories? It is not the profession that is dangerous, but primarily the personality type gravitating towards the profession that creates risk. Should certain personality types be directed to non-performance related careers? Probably not, since performing on stage may be a more effective intervention than psychiatric treatment. Keywords: Accidents, Alcohol, Anxiety, depression, homicide, musicians and suicide. Introduction Is there a relationship between fame in performance related careers with the shorter life expectancy due to accidents, drug overdose, homicide and suicide? The number of musicians, Elvis Presley, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Keith Moon, Sid Vicious, Kurt Cobain, Amy International Journal of Health and Economic Development, 6(2), 36-46, July 2020 37 Winehouse, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Prince who died of addiction is staggering. -

For Hodges, Music's 'All About Love' : Go Memphis
For Hodges, music's 'all about love' By Bob Mehr Thursday, July 21, 2011 Charles Hodges has seen the light twice in his life. The first time was as a 13-year-old boy, performing at his eighth-grade graduation. "The teacher asked me if I would play 'What I'd Say' by Ray Charles. I did and got such huge cheers, a standing ovation. All I could see was the (stage) lights, but I could hear the applause and the whistles," says Hodges. "Right then I said, 'This is what I want to do. I want to be a musician.'" Some 40 years later, Charles Hodges saw the light again; this time it was God sending out a signal to change his ways. Hodges would do just that, giving up his secular music career and becoming an ordained minister. In between those two life-altering events, Hodges was responsible for some of the most vital and familiar sounds in all of American music. As the keyboardist for Memphis' Hi Records house band, his signature organ work colored the great hits of O.V. Wright, Al Green, Ann Peebles and Syl Johnson. This past week Hodges released his second solo CD, God He's Able, a collection of soulful spiritual and worship songs. For the 64-year-old Hodges, the record is just another marker in a long musical journey and personal journey. The sixth of 12 children, Hodges was raised in what were then the farm lands of post- World War II Germantown. "It was just a two-lane highway out there," recalls Hodges. -
