  • Man of Many Acts
The Sunday Tribune - Spectrum Page 1 of 2 Sunday, July 27, 2008 Man of many acts Shoma A. Chatterji on Soumitra Chatterjee, who has been honoured with the National Award for Best Actor FOR 50 years, from Satyajit Ray to Tapan Sinha to Mrinal Sen to Gautam Ghosh and Aparna Sen, all major directors have utilised Soumitra Chatterjee’s enormous talent that creates unforgettable cinema. The peerless thespian was nominated for the National Award once, for his performance in Gautam Ghose’s Dekh a, but had declined the award while other awards, titles, felicitations and tributes kept flowing in. This includes the Padma Bhushan, a BBC documentary on his life and works called Gaach , meaning ‘tree’ and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to theatre. He has directed and acted in more than 10 significant plays with Soumitra Chatterjee has acted in about 300 films some successful shows abroad. He has authored more than 10 books on poetry, beginning with Jalapropater Dharey Dandabo Bole ( To Stand by the Waterfall ) in 1975. Today, he takes the National Award for Best Actor for his performance in Suman Ghosh’s Padakkhep in his stride with the quiet calm that is this actor’s hallmark. "A serious interest in cinema started with the first Film Festival held in Calcutta after my parents shifted to Calcutta from Howrah. For the first time, I watched Bicycle Thieves , Miracle in Milan , Fall of Berlin , with friends equally interested in cinema. These films changed my entire thinking about cinema. We saw Renoir’s River , shot completely in India.

A: as a profession? Q: yes. A: I really didn’t have that kind of a focus as such after my graduation. There was a good studio at that time, a sound recording studio very close to my place, well known in Kolkata at that time. So I used to go there generally, but I never thought that I’ll get into this kind of a profession. So only one thing I don’t know somehow I decided not to join any kind of work like banking and all that stuff. So I just got to know about FTII, that there is a sound engineering course and all that; because I went to technicians’ studio where one of my relatives used to work, Satyen Chatterjee. Q: ok. A: famous sound engineer.

  • Sangeeta Datta, Kaustav Bakshi & Rohit K Dasgupta the Game
THE WORLD OF RITUPARNO GHOSH: TEXTS, CONTEXTS AND TRANGRESSIONS Sangeeta Datta, Kaustav Bakshi & Rohit K Dasgupta The game-changer Rituparno Ghosh (1961-2013) was a filmmaker, lyricist and writer who emerged on the cultural scene of Bengal as a copywriter of a Kolkata-based advertising firm in the eighties. He made a mark for himself in the world of commercials, winning several awards for Response, the agency he worked for. After directing two documentaries for Doordarshan (National television), he graduated into filmmaking with Hirer Angti (Diamond Ring, 1992), which was critically acclaimed but failed to get a commercial release. For his second film, Ghosh collaborated with Aparna Sen and Renu Roy to form Spandan Films which produced Unishey April (19th April, 1995). The film won the National Award for the Best Film and when it hit the screens in the summer of 1995 it remarkably changed the experience of cinema for the middleclass Bengali bhadrolok.1 Ghosh arrived at a time when Bengali cinema was going through a particularly difficult phase. Satyajit Ray had passed away in 1992, leaving behind him a vacuum which seemed difficult to fill. Although Goutam Ghose, Aparna Sen and Buddhadeb Dasgupta tried to carry forward the legacy of ‘intellectual’ cinema represented by Ray and Mrinal Sen, they made films far in-between having little bearing on the commercial market. Tollygunge, where the main studios are located, had been taken over by filmmakers who were mostly remaking Tamil or Hindi films. They worked within severe budget constraints and the financial and intellectual impoverishment was glaringly visible on screen.

  • Bengali Cinema: the Long, Hard Road to Recovery
Uttam Kumar in his last Bengali film, Ogo Bodhu Sundari Bengali Cinema: The Long, Hard Road To Recovery Swapan Mullick There is hardly any room for optimism; little to sustain a firm conviction that the Bengali cinema is well set on the road to a revival. Yet there does seem to be a sign of something 'new' on the distant horizon, some hope that Tollyg unje w ill not become a neglected and launguishing area of B-grade pot boilers in the absence of a film from Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen. To be sure, tradition prevails with most of those who contribute to the annual tally of about 35 films, exploiting sloppy and overworked sentiments, mostly against rural backgrounds (since that is where the bulk of the Bengali cinema audience lies) . Mrinal Sen has kept to his schedule of one film a year 28 altho ugh he seems to have developed a new style of completing a film and rushmg with it to a festival even before the home audience has tasted it. Satyajit Ra y also kept to the one-film-a-year routine till a particularly severe spell of illness sent him to a nursing home for a few days towards the end of 1980 and then restricted his movements for several months. But Ray is a determined and tireless artist. When he is not making films, he is producing his delightful variety of detective fiction, doing sketches or putting final editorial touches to a children's magazine. Ray and Sen have continued to ensure that the world takes note of what is happening on a remote Tollygunje circuit.

It is through the genre of counter cinema that Sen attempts to redress these wrongs meted out to women and also provide an alternate solution to all women. When Parama released in 1984 it created a revolution of sorts and is still studied as a supreme effort in expressing women’s aesthetics as far as cinema in India is concerned.
