History of Greed: Financial Fraud from Tulip Mania to Bernie Madoff ffirs.indd vi 6/24/10 7:44:21 AM Praise for History of Greed “David Sarna has written an important, readable, erudite, and compelling book that delves into all of the dark corners of the fi nancial markets in a way that only one who is a knowledgeable intellectual like David and who has seen, as David has, the inner workings of the markets can do.” —Andrew Malick Chairman, Needham & Co. “David Sarna has provided a close-up, insider’s view of some of the shenanigans going on in and around the fi nancial capitals of the world. It is very readable, entertaining, and almost funny until you realize all the lives that have been hurt by the combination of at best amoral and more correctly criminal acts aimed at investors of all stripes who foolishly expected and chased outsized returns. Sarna describes all this against a backdrop of regulatory complacency, along with overgenerous bonuses and salaries for the titans of fi nance and industry who added little if anything to the quality of life for those who did not ride the gravy train with them.” —Jonathan Harris, CPA Retired Senior Partner, Big Four accounting fi rm “David Sarna is a visionary technologist. He is also a sophisticated investor and fi nancier. He has written a readable, comprehensive, fasci- nating, and well-researched book that explores troublesome aspects of the fi nancial system in a way only an experienced insider could.” —Jay N. Goldberg Senior Managing Director, Hudson Ventures “A comprehensive review of what has happened to us in our fi nancial markets over and over and over and over again. It’s an important history, written with wit and delivered with wisdom. Undoubtedly, History of Greed will become required reading by anyone serious about under- standing the capital markets.” —Frederick L. Gorsetman Founder and Managing Member, Oxbridge Financial Group LLC ffirs.indd i 6/24/10 7:44:19 AM “Fascinating! I did not think the trading of securities and reading about it could be that absorbing.” — Carl Nisser Counsel, McGuire Woods Former Judge at Svea Court of Appeal, Stockholm “History of Greed is right on the money and quite timely. I found a lot of information and much I did not know, and I have been around the industry for a while. It made me feel like a dunce once I saw how the manipulative trading on the over-the-counter (OTC) stock market really works.” —Philip Fox Insurance Executive and Former Broker ffirs.indd ii 6/24/10 7:44:20 AM History of Greed F inancial F raud from T ulip Mania to Bernie Madoff David E. David Sarna has written an important, readable, erudite, and compelling book that delves into all of the dark corners of the fi nancial markets in a way that only one who is a knowledgeable intellectual like David, and who has seen, as David has, the inner workings of the markets, can do. • The Economics of Cryptocurrency Pump and Dump Schemes
The Economics of Cryptocurrency Pump and Dump Schemes JT Hamrick, Farhang Rouhi, Arghya Mukherjee, Amir Feder, Neil Gandal, Tyler Moore, and Marie Vasek∗ Abstract The surge of interest in cryptocurrencies has been accompanied by a pro- liferation of fraud. This paper examines pump and dump schemes. The recent explosion of nearly 2,000 cryptocurrencies in an unregulated environment has expanded the scope for abuse. We quantify the scope of cryptocurrency pump and dump on Discord and Telegram, two popular group-messaging platforms. We joined all relevant Telegram and Discord groups/channels and identified nearly 5,000 different pumps. Our findings provide the first measure of the scope of pumps and suggest that this phenomenon is widespread and prices often rise significantly. We also examine which factors affect the pump's \suc- cess." 1 Introduction As mainstream finance invests in cryptocurrency assets and as some countries take steps toward legalizing bitcoin as a payment system, it is important to understand how susceptible cryptocurrency markets are to manipulation. This is especially true since cryptocurrency assets are no longer a niche market. The market capitaliza- tion of all cryptocurrencies exceeded $800 Billion at the end of 2017. Even after the huge fall in valuations, the market capitalization of these assets is currently around $140 Billion. This valuation is greater than the fifth largest U.S. commer- cial bank/commercial bank holding company in 2018, Morgan Stanley, which has a market capitalization of approximately $100 Billion.1 In this paper, we examine a particular type of price manipulation: the \pump and dump" scheme. These schemes inflate the price of an asset temporarily so a ∗Hamrick: University of Tulsa, [email protected].

  • The Effects of the New Type of Large Trader
The effects of the new type of large trader. Name: Daan Kampschreur Student number: 4532287 Supervisor: Stefan Erik Oppers Date: 15-08-2021 Abstract The goal of this study is to research to what extend the market behavior of the GameStop short squeeze differs compared to other short squeezes. This comparison is made with the Volkswagen and KaloBios short squeeze. The data consists of panel data ranging from 2008 to 2021 is collected from the Refinitiv Eikon database with an addition of the S&P500 data, which is collected from Stooq. For four hypothesis regressions are run using a random effects model and one hypothesis is tested mathematically. As for the question to what extent the market behavior of the GameStop short squeeze differs from the other short squeezes results suggest the new type of large trader to have a positive effect on the trading volume, a negative effect on the price volatility, a negative effect on the stock return, no effect on the price reversal and mathematical calculations prove that the trading volume of the GameStop short squeeze was more “smooth” than the other short squeezes. Altogether this study shows a significant difference between the market behavior of the GameStop short compared to the other short squeezes. • Complete Guide for Trading Pump and Dump Stocks
Complete Guide for Trading Pump and Dump Stocks Pump and dump stocks make me sick and just to be clear I do not trade these setups. When I look at a stock chart I normally see bulls and bears battling to see who will come out on top. However, when I look at a pump and dump stock it just saddens me. For those of you that watched the show Spartacus, it’s like when Gladiators have to fight outside of the arena and in dark alleys. As I see the sharp incline up and subsequent collapse, I think of all the poor souls that have lost IRA accounts, college savings and down payments for their homes. Well in this article, I’m going to cover 2 ways you can profit from these setups and clues a pump and dump scenario is taking place. Before we hit the two strategies, let’s first ground ourselves on the background of pump and dump stocks. What is a Pump and Dump Stock? These are stocks that shoot up like a rocket in a short period of time, only to crash down just as quickly shortly thereafter. The stocks often come out of nowhere and then the buzz on them reaches a feverish pitch. We can break the pump and dump down into three phases. Pump and Dump Phases Phase 1 – The Markup Every phase of the pump and dump scheme are challenging, but phase one is really tricky. The ring of thieves need to come up with an entire plan of attack to drum up excitement for the security but more importantly people pulling out their own cash.
