Place the completed envelope with your donation in the petition slot of the candle stand. Fr. Roux will bless and light a purple candle in memory of your deceased loved one.

Marian Visitations

As you have seen this month, apparitions of our Blessed Mother have occurred all over the world throughout history. Some of us may be acquainted with the more popular of these visitations, but read on to learn about some of the lesser known appearances of Our Lady.

In 1973 at a convent in Akita, Japan, Our Lady appeared to Sister Agnes Sasagawa through a carved wooden statue of Mary. This statue became bathed in a brilliant light and spoke to sister Agnes on three occasions. During these three visits, our Lady shared sev- eral messages (similar to those of Fatima) which emphasized praying for the clergy, turning away from sin and making reparation for sinners, and praying the rosary daily. Bishop Ito approved the Akita apparitions in 1984.

Our Lady of Laus

Benoite Rencurel, a young shepherdess in , received many visions of Our Lady between 1664 and 1718. Mary repeated a call for repentance from sins and is therefore also known as “Our Lady Refuge of Sinners”. She also directed that a church and house for priests be constructed at the site where pilgrims could seek greater conversion, especially through the of Reconciliation. Many healings have been reported by those who have visited the shrine. These apparitions were approved by the on May 5, 2008.

Between November 1932 and January 1933, Our Lady appeared thirty-three times to five children in Belgium. Mary again asked for prayers for the conversion of sinners and requested a chapel be built as a place of pilgrimage. Mary is also known from these visions as “ of the Golden Heart” as she revealed her golden heart to the children on the last day of her appearances to them. The feast of Our Lady of Beauraing is celebrated on August 22, the traditional date of the Feast of the .

Next Week: Saint Patrick SAINTS IN TRAINING Formation for young children learning the Faith to become saints Mary Visits Us Match each Visitation

We have talked this month about different ways Mary continues to be with us here on Earth. Here are some other visitations that saints have shared:

Mary appeared at Knock, a small village in Ireland in August 1879. A number of villagers saw a si- lent apparition, which lasted about three hours, outside the gable end of the local church. They saw three figures: Mary, Joseph, and St , as well as a lamb on an altar and angels.

Mary appeared to two children, Maximin Giraud, and Mélanie Cal- vat, in 1846 one afternoon while they were looking after the ani- mals high up on the mountain. She appealed for penance. This ap- parition is credited with a major revival of Catholicism in the area.

Mary appeared to Catherine Labouré, in the chapel of the Daugh- ters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in Paris three times in 1830. She showed her the design of the medal of the Immaculate Concep- tion, known as the "." Alessandro Muzio After a hailstorm, a farmer named Alessandro Muzio witnessed an apparition of the . The miracle brought about very strong emotion in people so that Casalbordino, in centuries, became a place of pilgrimage for many of the faithful.

SAINTS OF THE WEEK Sunday, October 27: St. Frumentius—Bishop and St. Frumentius was born in Tyre, Lebanon in the early 300s. While traveling by sea as a young child, his boat was shipwrecked near Ethiopia. He was taken to the Ethiopian royal court in Azuma where he was raised in the court of the king and served as a secretary. Following the king’s death, Frumen- tius temporarily governed until King Aizan assumed the throne. Frumentius then traveled to Alexan- dria, where he was ordained and consecrated a bishop by St. Athanasius. He then returned to Ethiopia and helped spread the Catholic Faith. Frumentius is regarded as the “Father of Ethiopia.”

Monday, October 28: St. Royo— St. Joachim Royo was born in Teruel, Spain in 1691. He joined the Dominicans in Valen- cia in 1709. Three years later, he set off for the Philippines as a missionary, and he arrived in China in 1715 where he labored with St. Peter Sanz. Due to anti-Catholic sentiment, he was forced to hide from the government during the day and minister to the people only at night. In 1746, he was discovered and arrested. Joachim spent two years in a prison at Fu- tsheu, China before being strangled to death on October 28, 1748. Tuesday, October 29: St. Gaetano Errico—Priest St. Gaetano was born in Secondigliano, Italy on October 19, 1791. When he was fourteen years old, he felt called to the priesthood. He applied for the Capuchins and , but was turned away due to his young age. He then entered the archdiocesan seminary. After ordination, he was assigned to teaching duties and served in that role for 20 years. In 1818, during one his annual retreats to the Redemptorist retreat house in Pagani, Italy, he had a vision of St. asking him to start a new religious order. Gaetano set out on building the church of Our Lady of Sorrows and started an order in a small house next door which became known as the Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Wednesday, October 30: St. Dorothea of Montau—Widow and Hermit St. Dorothea was born in Montau, Prussia on February 6, 1347 to a poor peasant family. When she was seventeen, she married a sword-cutter named Albrecht of Danzig who had a violent temper and was fre- quently abusive toward her. After years of praying for her husband, his attitude softened, and he became more devout in his faith. He began to regularly accompany her on various pilgrimages. In 1390, Albrecht passed away. A year later, Dorothea relocated to Marienswerder and lived as a hermit. During this phase of her life, she became renown for her spiritual wisdom, gift of prophecy, and ability to work miracles.

Thursday, October 31: St. Bega—Virgin St. Bega was a princess born sometime during the seventh century in Ireland. She desired to de- vote her life to God, so she fled the country rather than enter into an arranged marriage with the Norwegian prince. Surviving a shipwreck, she found herself in Cumberland, England where she lived for many years as a hermit. At the encouragement of St. Oswald, she entered the convent and became a nun. Bega later founded what became known as St. Bee’s Monastery, and served as abbess until her death. She was known for compassion for the poor. Friday, November 1: St. Valentine Berrio-Ochoa—Bishop and Martyr St. Valentine was born in Ellorio, Spain in the 1800s. He joined the Dominican order and was ordained a priest. Valentine was then sent to the Philippines as a missionary, and later to Vietnam in 1858 where he served as Vicar Apostolic and was named titular bishop. He was turned in to the government by a fallen away follower, was arrested, tortured, and beheaded along with St. Hermosilla and Bl. Peter Amato.

Saturday, November 2: St. —Bishop and Martyr St. Victorinus was born in Greece sometime during the second century. He was appointed to the bishopric of Pettau in what is now Austria. Victorinus was a prolific writer who composed commentaries on several books of the . While it’s believed that he may have supported Millenarianism, St. Jerome spoke highly of him for his commentaries and he is regarded as a saint by the Church. Victorinus was martyred during the persecutions of Diocletian in 303. INTERESTEDINTERESTED ININ BECOMIBECOMINGNG AA MEMBERMEMBER OFOF THE CATHEDRAL OF SAINT PATRICK? Church membership is an obligation of discipleship and love that derives from being united with Christ. A person becomes a member of the through Baptism. At the Cathedral, active membership is a requirement for the celebration of a marriage or baptism, for one to be eligible to be a Godparent or Confor- mation sponsor, and for special benefits such as tuition subsidy at a Catholic school. There are certain mini- mum requirements for parish membership called the precepts of the Church. The following are three of those precepts and how the Cathedral of Saint Patrick looks upon them in relation to parish membership.

 ATTENDANCE AT WEEKLY MASS. The first precept of the Church requires the faithful to participate in the Eucharistic celebration when the Christian community gathers together on the day commemorating the Res- urrection of the Lord (CCC #2042) and on holy days of obligation (CCC #2043). Since the Cathedral’s weekly Mass attendance envelopes are the primary way we determine if parishioners are regularly attending Mass, pa- rishioners must place their envelopes in the collection basket every Sunday regardless of whether one makes a financial contribution. If a parishioner gives online or prefers to place cash in the offertory basket, an empty Mass attendance envelope should still be placed in the basket with "I attended Mass" checked.  RECEIPT OF THE SACRAMENTS. The third & fourth precept of the Church states the faithful must ensure preparation for the Eucharist by the reception of the sacrament of reconciliation at least once a year, and the re- ception of Holy Communion at least once a year during the Easter season (CCC #2042) and join in fast and abstinence during Lent.  SUPPORT OF THE CHURCH. The fifth precept of the Church states that the faithful have the duty of providing for the material needs of the Church, each according to their abilities in a regular, identifiable and meaningful way.

HOW TO REGISTER AT THE CATHEDRAL To register as a parishioner of the Cathedral, please visit www.stpatricks.org/newcomers/register, or scan the QR code to the right, and complete the simple online form. Alternatively, paper registra- tion forms may be found at each of the entrances to the Cathedral.

This week we welcome in Baptism...
