"Gem of Santo Domingo"

El Alcázar de Colón, situated in the heart of Santo Domingo is a part of the Ciudad Colonial UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most important historical gems of the city. This Viceregal building was once home to Diego Columbus, son of , who was the fourth Governor of Indies. The architecture of the building is characteristic by Mariordo (Mario Roberto of Spanish Colonial period with Gothic elements. After it was captured by Durán Ortiz) Francis Drake and as Santo Domingo's authority decreased, the castle was nearly in ruins. The arched mansion, as we see today, thanks to extensive restoration efforts, is half of its original size and magnitude. This magnificent castle today houses a museum displaying artistic masterpieces from across Europe during the late medieval Renaissance era. Vintage furniture, medieval weapons, crockeries and chariots comprise the exhibits at this museum. An exquisite tapestry collection is one of the most viewed exhibits.

Palacio Nacional "Architecture & Art"

Italian architect Guido D’Alessandro was the mind behind the design of this elegant building. Built in the neoclassical style, the 18,000 square meter (193,750 square feet) complex houses the executive and administrative branches of the Dominican government. The construction was started at the centenary of Dominican independence in 1944 and by Public Domain inaugurated three years later. This elaborate structure is believed to be one of the country's finest. The Room of the Caryatids and the collection of some of the finest national art on display in the building are some of the main attractions here. Tours are by appointment only, so do make a reservation in advance.

Cathedral of Santa María la Menor

"First Cathedral in the Americas"

As one of the earliest Catholic cathedrals of the New World, Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor retains its significance centuries after its inception. Built in the 16th Century after Pope Julius II commissioned it, it was consecrated in 1541. Francis Drake, in 1586, made this Cathedral his headquarters, thus saving it from complete destruction. The Gothic by Mariordo (Mario Roberto architecture, characterized by picturesque carved lunettes and figurines at Durán Ortiz) the entrance, is striking in coral limestone. Baroque elements can be seen in the altar, with ornate carvings. The cathedral was also known to be a temporary resting place of Christopher Columbus' remains. Fortaleza Ozama

"16th-century Jewel"

Set along the Ozama River, Fortaleza Ozama was built in the 16th-century by the Spanish when they occupied the . One of the oldest colonial structures in the country, it is known for its excellent medieval architecture. The edifice was made with the objective of defending the city from attacks by pirates and also foreign invasions. The by Mariordo (Mario Roberto walls of the castle are almost 2 meters (6.5 feet) thick, and the Tower of Durán Ortiz) Homage with a fluttering Dominican Republic flag, acts as the centerpiece of the fortress. Columbus Lighthouse "Impressive Monument to Columbus"

Designed by architect Joe Gleave, this monument was erected in remembrance of the great explorer Christopher Columbus. El Faro a Colón or the Colombus Lighthouse is a cross-shaped 46-meter tall (150 feet) structure, constructed of completely white marble. It is where the remains of the Columbus were kept after his tomb was moved from the Cathedral by D-Stanley of Santa María la Menor in the year 1992. At night, powerful lights illuminate this Christian edifice and project its shadow against the sky. Areas inside the monument are used as exhibition rooms, archives, a library and a museum.
