Music plays a major role in the life of most University students. Musical tastes run from Aerosmith to R.E.M. to Frank Zappa and back again. To accomodate these diverse tastes, a pair of local musicians have opened a re- cord store in downtown Bowling Green. Mad Hatter Music Company, 143 East Wooster Street, is owned by Ed Cratty and Billy Hanaway. Both are members of Mad Hatter, a local cover band. The two made dreams a reality with the opening of the store on July 20. Cratty had envisioned an alternative re- cord store while Hanaway had a personal vision of "another record store in Bowling Green, one out of the mainstream, one that wasn't strictly a Top 40-fashion type thing." Although the store was already open, a Grand Opening was held on August 22 for returning University students. According to Hanaway, the main priority for any new business is having a clientele to support the venture. He believes that there is. "Look at all the people in here,", he said, pointing to the customers rooting around in the record bin and looking at the store's selection of posters.

Both Cratty and Hanaway sacrificed a majority of their personal record and CD collections to open the store. "We feel that everyone should be special."
