Lawsuit against San Diego From The San Diego Reader, by Dorian Hargrove, June 7, 2017

In March of 2017, Jon Warshawsky sued the City of San Diego for improper design of the center median and failure to maintain it.

According to public documents obtained by the Reader, the median was the cause of at least one other accident prior to the collision and the subject of numerous complaints — one of which came from the San Diego Police Department — for poor visibility in months preceding the death of Walzer.

Formula 1 comes to the USA. There are a variety of seating options, from general admission to the $ 5,200 Paddock Club. All include the Justin Timberlake and Stevie Wonder concerts.

Saturday, 21 October 2017, Formula 1: US Grand Prix BBQ Party For those of you attending the Formula 1 US Grand Prix in Austin this year, Hill Country Region (HCR) of PCA has an exclusive opportunity for you to dine at the world famous Franklin Barbecue! Owner Aaron Franklin is known throughout the U.S. and internationally as one of the best BBQ chefs around. He was even awarded a James Beard Foundation Award for Best Chef: Southwest, and is the only chef who specializes in barbecue to ever be nominated, or receive, the award.

We have rented out the entire restaurant for Saturday, October 21, 2017, from 6:00-9:00pm. The cost is $128 per person (includes tax and gratuity). This may seem pricey but this is a rare, private dining experience at a place that was listed on “the 50 Best BBQ Joints in the World” by Texas Monthly magazine. Plus it includes a three hour open bar and possibly seconds, if you have enough room in your belly.

Both Registration and pre-payment are only available online at clubregistration.net. The event is limited to a maximum of 60 people, so sign up today! For more information please contact Hill Country Vice President, Tuffy von Briesen, at [email protected]

11-21 August 2017, Monterey Classic Car Week

The usual last events to confirm have confirmed: Canepa’s Open House (page 28) and the Blackhawk Museum’s Open House (page 29).

Hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of classic cars will come to Monterey California in the hope that you’ll stop by to admire them. The hotel rates will be astronomical (especially the last weekend—so going for the week isn’t too much more) but you’d spend more on a cruise. Resort 2 Me and the usual travel websites can help you find a hotel.

Most car week events are inexpensive or free (notably PCA’s Werks Reunion) and they’re all listed in San Gabriel Valley Region’s Calendar. It’s wise to join the Porsche Corral at Laguna Seca.

Hotels

As of Monday, 31 July 2017, Kayak still showed some hotel rooms (maybe some cancellations). A few are under $ 300/day if you stay the whole week.

Monterey Events

The events at classic car week are listed on the San Gabriel Valley Region Calendar. There are 92 entries starting at page 14 of the calendar.

Coast Highway Closed

According to quickmap.dot.ca.gov Rt. 1 will be closed from Big Sur Station (Post Mile 46.4) to Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge (Post Mile 45.5) due to Bridge Replacement until 6:01 PM 30 September 2017.

Tuesday, 15 August 1027, Classic Motorsports Magazine Monterey Kickoff Cruise-In at Pacific Grove

Coming to Monterey for auction week? Kick it off in style along with the staff of Classic Motorsports. We'll be gathering with a few hundred of our closest friends on beautiful Lighthouse Ave in Pacific Grove, California. Bring your cool classic or exotic car and enjoy the evening with good people and award-winning restaurants. Everyone's invited!

Admission is free thanks to support from Hagerty, Michelin, Reliable Carriers and Superformance. You won't want to miss this gathering.

When: Tuesday, 15 August 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

17-19 August 2017, 1967 Soft-Window 911S Targa at Russo and Steele

Porsche only built 483 of these. As the first year of the 911S and the first year of the [soft-window] Targa it’s a very desirable model. As detailed at the Early 911S Registry Forum, this particular car has come up for sale several times since 2011.

sgvr.pca.org 22 of 57 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 1 August 2017

One forum post pointed out it’s a non-matching numbers car {Russo and Steele doesn’t address matching numbers]. “Correct” headlights, fog lights and seats might cost under $ 3,000 but 4½ x 15” Fuchs alloys are in the “if you have to ask you can’t afford it” range.

Friday, 18 August 2017, 1961 Porsche Junior L108 Tractor at Bonhams

1961 Porsche Junior L108 Tractor, 15hp at 2,250rpm, 6-Speed Transmission

The Porsche 108 was the smallest and most attractive of four tractors produced by Porsche from 1956 to 1963. The tractors were produced at the old Zeppelin factory in Friedrichs-hafen-Manzell, Germany. The appeal of the Porsche-built tractors can be attributed to much more than just their stunning looks. Porsche tractors were designed with a fluid coupling to connect the engine to a six-speed transmission – a distinctive feature of Porsche's tractors which offered the driver smooth shifting.

18-19 August 2017, Split Windshield 356 at RM Sothebys Auction

1951 Porsche 356 1500 Coupe by Reutter, Chassis no. 11111, Engine no. 30069, completed 20 December 1951. RM Sotheby’s says this car has its original 1500 cc engine and is in its original colors (black was very rare). They don’t say if it still has its original crashbox transmission. It’s estimated to sell between $600,000 and $700,000.

These early “body bumper” coupés had incredible aerodynamics—it’s only recently that many cars have matched its .29 Cd.

12-21 August 2017, Canepa Open House 2017

From Canepa [email protected], 7/21/2017 6:28 PM

Mid-August and Monterey means classic car heaven. From the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion to the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, there's no better place on Earth to bathe in the beauty of historic automobiles. Auctions, tours, and shows surround these epic events, but beware; immediate immersion can lead to a full-blown 4- wheel freak out.

Because it's best to ease into this kind of gas- powered sensory onslaught, Canepa will be holding a 10-day open house to act as a gateway ... and you're invited!

Whether you're on your way or coming back, Canepa is just minutes off Highway 17 between Monterey and the San Francisco Bay Area. Our extended open house kicks off with the world famous Canepa Cars & Coffee at 8:00am, Saturday August 12th, and runs through Monday, August 21st. Closed Sundays.

WHAT: A 10 day Open House to celebrate Monterey Classic Car week and the people who enjoy it most. Acclimate to the Monterey environment by exploring our 70,000 square feet of showroom, the Canepa Motorsport Museum, and the Canepa Motorsports and Restoration shops. You'll be surrounded by one-of-a-kind classics, concours-winning restorations, and championship racecars.

WHEN: Saturday, August 12th - Monday, August 21st. 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Monday-Saturday, Closed Sundays.

Plan now to stop on by and join us!

Porsche planning to enter Formula E From Porsche Newsroom, 07/28/2017

New motorsport strategy with a clear focus on electromobility and the GT class: From 2019, a Porsche works team will compete in Formula E.

sgvr.pca.org 38 of 57 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 1 August 2017

L-R: Oliver Blume Chairman of the Executive Board of Dr Ing h c f Porsche AG, Alejandro Agag Founder CEO of Formula E, Michael Steiner Member of the Executive Board Research And Development, Stuttgart 2017 Porsche AG

From 2019, a Porsche works team will compete in Formula E. As a result, the company will be ending its involvement in the LMP1 class of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) at the end of the 2017 season. Porsche maintains its focus on international GT racing, and will also concentrate its motorsport strategy on using the 911 RSR in the GT class of the FIA World Endurance Championship, the highlight of which is the , as well as the American IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and other long-distance classics.

This realignment of motorsport is derived from the direction set out for the company in Porsche Strategy 2025, which will see Porsche develop a combination of pure GT vehicles and fully electric sports cars, such as the first fully battery-powered Mission E road car. “Entering Formula E and achieving success in this category are the logical outcomes of our Mission E. The growing freedom for in-house technology developments makes Formula E attractive to us”, says Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board for Research and Development at Porsche AG. “Porsche is working with alternative, innovative drive concepts. For us, Formula E is the ultimate competitive environment for driving forward the development of high-performance vehicles in areas such as environmental friendliness, efficiency and sustainability”. Porsche has already taken the first steps towards developing its own Formula E racing car this year.

At the same time, Porsche is increasing its commitment in the GT class. “A diversity of manufacturers and the quality of both WEC and IMSA have led us to strengthen our commitment and concentrate our

energies on using the 911 RSR”, says Steiner. “We want to be number one. To do that, we must invest accordingly”.

Porsche 911 RSR in Daytona After four highly successful years, three victories in a row at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and World Championship titles in both the team and driver classification in 2015 and 2016, Porsche will leave the LMP1 class behind. Nevertheless, this year the works team from Weissach wants to defend the two World Championship titles one more time. The season ends on November 18 in Bahrain.

Fritz Enzinger, Vice President LMP1 and a central figure in the return of Porsche to top-level motorsport in 2014, says: “Building up the Le Mans team from scratch was a huge challenge. Over the years, we have developed an incredibly successful and professional team. This will be our basis going forward. I am certain that we will maintain our high level in Formula E. Confidence is high, and we are excited to get started”.

Porsche will keep LMP1 team fully intact Porsche will keep the successful LMP1 team fully intact, including the factory drivers. Alongside ventures in other racing series and the intensive preparation for Formula E, Porsche is examining other fields of application and development areas.

About Formula E Formula E is the world’s first purely electric racing series and was launched on September 13, 2014. The International Automobile Federation, or FIA, which is also responsible for Formula 1, has organised the series to make a statement in favour of electromobility and to get more young people excited about motorsport. Unlike most other series, the season begins in the autumn and ends in summer. The race venues are specially designed street courses in the heart of major cities, meaning the sport comes to the spectators – and not the other way around. Electromobility is playing an important role in the mobility of tomorrow, especially in urban environments.

Those Glorious Peach-Stuffed Doughnuts are Back At The Donut Man

From laist.com, by Tim Loc, on Jul 24, 2017 2:39 PM

(Via The Donut Man/Facebook)

Every year, doughnut-hounds wait patiently for the store's strawberry-filled doughnuts (which usually arrive at the end of January) and its peach-filled counterpart (which often arrive in mid-July). These gastronomical wonders tell us that we exist in the same space-time continuum as the rest of the temperate-climated world does, and right now we're getting another such reminder, as The Donut Man recently announced its first batch of peach doughnuts.

If you're not familiar with The Donut Man (don't worry, we won't judge), you can catch up via Huell Howser's visit to the beloved doughnut purveyor.

The Panamera Turbo already had ample thrust off the line, but adding a stout electric motor to the package makes the initial launch even more breathtaking. Porsche engineers credit the 8-speed PDK transmission that's in all Panameras for drastically cutting friction versus a torque converter automatic,

The Turbo S E-Hybrid is also available in the larger, rear-seat-oriented Executive model, should you need to make both your Panamera and its name even longer. A Sport Turismo version would be a logical variant at some point down the road, especially after a Porsche rep didn't outright deny the possibility of such a car.

Porsche's Cayenne Recalled by Germany Over Diesel Cheating Concerns

From Bloomerg, By Birgit Jennen and Rainer Buergin, July 27, 2017, 8:29 AM PDT & 9:02 AM PDT

Germany ordered Volkswagen AG’s Porsche marque to pull thousands of Cayenne sport-utility vehicles off the road as the sports-car brand became the latest to be embroiled in the diesel-cheating scandal that’s engulfed the industry for close to two years.

The German government has evidence that 22,000 Cayennes sold in Europe -- of which about 7,500 cars are in Germany -- with 3-liter diesel engines use a defeat device to cheat on emissions testing, Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt told reporters in Berlin. Porsche said it was taking “full responsibility” to customers and is cooperating closely with authorities.

Germany’s diesel scandal has ballooned recently. Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz last week announced plans to voluntarily recall 3 million diesel vehicles in Europe to upgrade their technology, while Volkswagen AG’s Audi brand said it will service 850,000 cars. On Thursday, VW said it would expand a recall to about 4 million cars to upgrade the engine software.

The recall affects cars with 3-liter TDI V6 diesel engines, which were developed by sister brand Audi. The motors were at the center of Audi’s own emission woes in the U.S. Porsche’s works council head Uwe Hueck in a recent media interview lashed out at Audi’s management over supplying a rigged engine and called for the marque’s top executives to be suspended.

Porsche’s Cayenne is one of the carmaker’s most popular models. While the company is best-known for its 911 sports car, bigger four-door vehicles like the Cayenne or the smaller Macan, as well as the Panamera sedan, have become critical parts of its line-up.

While Porsche said that it had pro-actively informed authorities of engine irregularities and vowed to bear “full responsibility toward the customer,” Dobrindt said that “there is no explanation for why this software is in these vehicles.”

“The cost is to be borne 100 percent by the manufacturer,” the minister said.

Case Update: Friends’ Fast and Furious Fraud Scheme Ends in Felony Charges

From California Department of Insurance, 28 July 2017:

$250K fraud scheme behind reported theft of classic ‘55 Porsche

Case Update: Further investigation determined Petros and Hatton were friends and had known each other for several years. Petros bought and sold a 1955 Porsche 356 Speedster years prior that had the same VIN as the Porsche Hatton allegedly owned and used in the insurance claim. Through investigation conducted by investigators, they confirmed the actual VIN of the 1955 Porsche they used, did exist, and the Porsche with the valid VIN is currently located in another country. Constantine Petros has been convicted of one felony count PC 550 (b)(1), insurance fraud, and sentenced to 150 days in jail and 5 years’ formal probation. Christopher Hatton has been convicted of one felony count PC 182, conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, and sentenced to 75 hours of community service, 5 years’ formal probation and to attend an ethics course. Restitution in the amount of $5,000 is to be paid jointly by Petros and Hatton.

Original news release:

Friends’ Fast and Furious Fraud Scheme Ends in Felony Charges From California Department of Insurance, 15 November 2016:

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Constantine Petros, 54, of Petaluma was arrested on October 19, 2016, in Sonoma County and Christopher Hatton, 60, of Tahoma, surrendered himself to Placer County Superior Court on November 14, 2016. Both were charged with multiple felony counts of insurance fraud and conspiracy for filing a false insurance claim for the alleged theft of a classic 1955 Porsche 356 Speedster.

sgvr.pca.org 46 of 57 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 1 August 2017

After receiving a suspicious claim referral from Farmers Insurance, the Department of Insurance Fraud Division launched an investigation into circumstances surrounding Hatton’s claim that his $250,000 collectable 1955 Porsche 356 Speedster was stolen in Nevada while he attended the area’s annual rib cook-off.

“Petros and Hatton allegedly went to great lengths to weave an elaborate scheme in an attempt to defraud Farmers Insurance out of $250,000,” said Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones. “Solid investigative work by department detectives stopped them in their criminal tracks.”

The investigation revealed a connection between Petros and Hatton and an alleged conspiracy to file a false insurance claim for a stolen collectable Porsche that Hatton never owned and was not stolen.

The alleged scheme began with Petros and Hatton creating a fraudulent paper trail showing Hatton purchased a 1955 Porsche 356 Speedster. Petros then provided a different Porsche so Hatton could secure an appraisal documenting the value of the collectable car. The investigation revealed the vehicle identification number or VIN was altered on the Porsche to make it appear as a different 1955 Porsche 356 Speedster. Using the Porsche with the altered VIN, Hatton was able to secure a vehicle appraisal value of $250,000. Hatton then used the appraisal to obtain an insurance policy for the collectable Porsche. On September 4, 2016, Hatton reported the Porsche 356 Speedster stolen to police and Farmers Insurance.

If convicted on all counts, Petros and Hatton could face more than five years in prison. The case is being prosecuted by the California Attorney General’s Office. If anyone has information on this crime or other crimes related to Petros, or has information regarding the missing Porsche (see picture below) please contact CDI fraud detectives at (916) 854-5842.

Petaluma Man Sentenced For Insurance Fraud Involving Porsche He Sold

Breaking: The 54-Year-Old Was Sentenced to Jail Time and Probation and Must Pay Restitution, State Officials Said Friday. By NorCal Patch (Patch Staff) - Updated July 29, 2017 3:38 pm ET

A Petaluma man was sentenced to 150 days in jail for filing a fraudulent stolen vehicle insurance claim last year, officials with the California Department of Insurance said Friday. Constantine Petros, 54, of

Petaluma and Christopher Hatton, 60, of Tahoma, were charged with felony insurance fraud and conspiracy.

Petros had bought and sold a classic 1955 Porsche 356 Speedster years ago, state insurance officials said. He then provided a different Porsche to Hatton who used the classic Porsche's vehicle identification number to have the less valuable Porsche appraised at $250,000, according to state insurance officials.

Hatton used that appraisal to get an insurance policy for the Porsche, then reported it was stolen on Sept. 4 in Nevada while he attended an annual rib cook-off, according to the California Department of Insurance.

Farmers Insurance referred the suspicious stolen vehicle claim to the Department of Insurance Fraud Division.

Insurance investigators learned about the conspiracy connection between Petros and Hatton and determined Hatton never owned a classic Porsche and that it was never stolen.

Petros was arrested on Oct. 19 in Sonoma County and Hatton surrendered in Placer County Superior Court on Nov. 14.

In addition to 150 days in jail, Petros was sentenced to five years of probation for one felony count of insurance fraud.

Hatton was convicted of one felony count of conspiracy to commit insurance fraud and sentenced to 75 hours of community service, five years of probation and ordered to attend an ethics course.

Both men also were ordered to jointly pay restitution, insurance officials said.
