5 Dear Member,

We are delighted to present the Golf Calendar for the 2021-22 golf season at Jonathan’s Landing Golf Club. Your committees have worked hard to create a fun, competitive schedule that is sure to keep all levels of play entertained throughout the season. Engaging all JL Members, and getting everyone involved in our golf activities is the key objective of our operation. If there is something the staff can do to assist with this, we welcome you to come see us.

We trust you will find it to be an enjoyable tournament season with the highlighted events. The Men’s Golf Association schedule is built around the most popular Frank Cardi Memorial Member-Member and accompanied by The Lockie Cup, Jonathan’s Cup and Watson Cup. The Women’s Golf Association combines a competitive nature along with camaraderie in its featured events such as the Captain’s Cup, Harkness Cup and Buddy Tournament. The Ladies’ 9 Hole Association is your source for the introduction to tournament golf with its fun formats including, but certainly not limited to, Tee for All, Greens Goddess, Three Queen’s and King and Hope in Bloom. Finally, you can guarantee an exciting Sunday with the lineup of mixed ‘J’ents & ‘L’adies and Twilight events.

This summer, our golf courses are primed and ready for another great season of play. This is likely to be the most exciting season in our golf facilities history with the opening of the Match Course and new Practice Facilities at Old Trail. What Gil Hanse, Jim Wagner and their team from Caveman Construction have created is truly something remarkable. We commend our Golf Course Maintenance leaders Brad Nelson and Don Taylor along with their team for their tremendous hard work in spearheading the grow in of Match and new Practice Facilities, all while fine tuning summer maintenance practices of Medal and the Village. We cannot wait to unveil this to the Membership and know that it will exceed the expectation of possibilities to what a South Florida golf experience can offer.

We look forward to an enjoyable and successful season ahead and wish you all a safe and healthy return to Jupiter!

15 Men’s Tournament Formats

General Descriptions of Formats Point Quota Quotas are determined by subtracting your handicap (100%) from 36. Minimum for 18 holes is a quota of four. Points are given on gross scores only.

1 Point Bogey Point Quota can be played as: 2 Points Par 2-Man teams 4 Points Birdie 4-Man teams 8 Points Eagle Individually

1 Best Ball of 2 (85% Handicap) Team Stroke Play, the lowest score (gross & net) of the twosome is recorded on each hole.

1 Best Ball of 4 (75% Handicap) Team Stroke Play, the foursome’s lowest score (gross & net) is recorded on each hole. A blind draw partner will be issued for teams with less than four players.

2 Better Balls of 4 (85% Handicap) Team Stroke Play, the foursome’s combined total of the two lowest scores (gross & net) is recorded on each hole. A blind draw partner will be issued for teams with less than four players.

Pinehurst Each player tees off. Player A will hit Player B’s second shot. Player B will hit Player A’s second shot. After the second shots have been hit, you must choose one of the two shots. The ball you have selected will be played out for the remainder using alternate shot format. If Player B’s second shot is selected, Player A will hit the third shot. The team handicap will be determined by taking 40% of higher player + 60% of lower player, combined.

2-Person Scramble Both players will hit from the tee. Selecting the best shot, both players will hit from that spot, continuing in this format until the ball is holed out. Team Handicap will be the sum of 35% of lower H.I. + 15% of higher H.I. Partners must play the same tees, White or Gold.

Scramble (“JL Scramble” or “Sit-Out Scramble”) A team, consisting of four players, tees off with the best ball on each series of shots being selected, including the putt. If a putt is missed, mark the ball until all players have putted. This format will be played as no one player may hit two consecutive full shots. There will be four players teeing off each hole, three players hitting all subsequent shots leading to the green, and all four players will have the opportunity to putt. 1/8 of the combined handicap will be used. Each player’s drive may be used a maximum of 5 times!

Note: Please remember that schedules can and will change. Please check ForeTees or the Golf Shop for any updates or changes.

The same procedure will continue until the team’s ball is on the green. All 4 players will have a chance to putt once a ball is on the green. Each player’s drive may be used a maximum of 5 times! Lunch, awards and a short meeting will follow.

November 3rd • Solheim Cup • GSP The Golf Shop will establish partners to play a 1-day Solheim format. Special Tournaments

Interclub Matches The Interclub Matches began in 1992 and there are four team matches during the season in December, January and February. Jonathan’s Landing plays Willoughby, Turtle Creek and Mirasol. We send eight players to play the matches with handicaps. To be eligible, a player must be a member of the Women’s 18-Hole Golf Association in good standing and be entitled to full golf privileges at her Club.

The matches are a better ball of partners from each Club playing against two players from another Club - players with the two lowest handicaps playing the two lowest players from the opposing team, and so on. Strokes are given off the lowest handicapped player in the foursome. The handicap differential can be no more than 8 strokes between the two-player team from each Club. The maximum handicap is 23. Players are picked according to Index to match up against the Club we are playing. The Captain and Club Champion are automatically on the team. The cost is $50 per match, which includes continental breakfast, lunch, golf and a cart. Sign up is available on ForeTees. You will be notified if you are selected to play in the match.

Special Tournaments

Palm Beach Challenge Cup • Scratch Matches (Matches & Team Confirmations Required) There are 30 clubs in Palm Beach County that field teams to play in the Cup. These match play contests are played scratch. There are eight players per club, per match. Each club hosts a match with the exception of the previous year’s Cup winner. The cost of each match is $55 which includes lunch, tips, golf, cart and a cocktail reception with appetizers. To be eligible, a player must be a member of the Women’s 18 hole Golf Association in good standing and be entitled to full golf privileges (no Preview Members) at her club and have posted at least 10 attested scores from October 25th - March 1st of the current golfing year. Matches are played in late March and early April. The only exception to the above 10 attested score policy will be a situation where a team is in jeopardy of forfeiting because they cannot field a team. In that case, the team Captain will be able to draft a player who may not meet the above criteria.

As of March 1st, the Cup Captains submit a lineup in order of Index from Foretees to the Challenge Cup Board. The lowest eight players in order of indices from the lineup who are available will play on Cup I. The lowest eight players may not play on Cup III. Although it is not mandatory, we encourage all interested ladies to sign up on ForeTees starting in mid January.

The trail fee, only if applicable, is for the Members who are listed on a Membership Account, is non-transferable and does not cover guest play. At the Village course, the small size of the Club fleet requires the use of a trail fee Member’s cart whenever possible.

Non-Resident Annual Cart Fees This one-time yearly fee permits the Member who resides outside of Jonathan’s Landing or Old Trail the use of a Club cart for the Members listed on a Membership Account only. The fee is non-transferable and does not cover guest play. At the Village course, the small size of the Club fleet requires the use of a trail fee Member’s cart whenever possible.

Handicap Flags

Golf Cart Handicap Flag Overview Handicap Flags will be issued for use by golfers who have physical disabilities that inhibit their ability to play golf at JL while abiding by the regular golf cart restrictions. Having a Handicap Flag displayed on their golf cart will allow the user to enter areas on the golf course otherwise restricted from golf cart traffic. These areas include but are not limited to approaches to greens and tees and areas beyond the stakes used to determine where the golf carts must regularly exit the fairways.

Golf Cart Handicap Flag Guidelines • Under no circumstances may a cart be driven within 30 feet of a green. • Carts must remain on Cart Paths on all Par 3’s. • Carts may not be driven within 15 feet of a bunker. • All wet, soft and muddy areas must be avoided at all times. • Where possible, cart paths should be used, especially around tees and greens. • No carts are to enter Hazards, Preservation Areas or Flower Beds at any time. • The 90° cart rule is in effect regardless of whether the cart carries a Handicap Flag or otherwise. Carts must use available paths until they reach a point level to where their ball lies and enter the fairway at a 90° angle to that point. Carts must leave the fairway at a 90° angle also using cart paths where provided. • On days when the Cart Path Only Rule is in effect, under no circumstances will golf carts be allowed to leave the cart paths. No flags will be issued on these days. • When using a Handicap Flag issued by the Club, please ensure to return the flag to the Golf Shop or Starter on completion of the round. Those wishing to purchase their own flag can do so.

Please use good judgment and care when using a Handicap Flag. The course conditions are maintained for the enjoyment of all Members and carts in sensitive spots of the course can cause a great deal of damage. Those persons found to be abusing the Handicap Flag privilege will be sent a letter reminding them of their responsi- bility when using a flag. Repeat offenders will have that privilege revoked.

Cell Phone Usage

Jonathan’s Landing Golf Club strongly discourages the use of cell phones in the Clubhouse. The use of a cell phone on the golf course is permitted for emergency use only and must be on vibrate at all times.

36 Golf Rules & Lightning Policy

Lightning Warning Procedures

One Long Siren Blast This means that lightning has been detected within a five mile radius of the golf course. In tournament play, you must mark your ball, discontinue play and take shelter. If you continue to play, you will be disqualified.

Three Consecutive Siren Blasts This means all clear. You may resume playing depending upon course conditions.

Lightning Policy

Please read through the following club policies as they relate to the occurrence of lightning at either JL Golf Facility. These policies are created to ensure the safety of Members and guests while playing the courses at JLGC. The policies are to be enforced by members of the Golf Staff and we ask that the following are adhered to. Please afford staff due respect in performing their role as set by the Board and Management of JLGC.

1. Upon the siren sounding to indicate lightning in the area all golfers on the course must cease play and take shelter (this is not optional). In the event of a lightning warning, staff will not be endangered by sending them on the Golf Course to bring people off. The Club will not assume the responsibility to evacuate the course.

2. The Range and Putting Green are closed while we are under a Lightning Delay and all golfers must cease use of these facilities immediately upon the siren sounding.

3. No players may begin play under a delay and no carts will be given to Members or guests by staff while under delay. Should the delay remain in effect beyond the Closing Hours of either facility, the highest ranking member of staff on site will determine whether play can be resumed.

4. Should the weather dictate that the course should remain closed after the threat of lightning has passed that will be determined by the Superintendent or highest ranking golf staff members on site.

5. Should any player fail to adhere to the instructions of staff under any of the above circumstances, the situation will be documented and they will be contacted by the Director of Golf or spoken to by the Head Professional at each respective facility.

38 Local Course Rules

The following Local Rules have been adopted by the Golf Committee.

Pace of Play

The single most vehement comment made throughout the season is in regards to the amount of time required to play a round of golf. The Golf Committee would like to request that the entire Membership take responsibility to enforce pace of play goals as follows:

Village Course Match Course Medal Course 4hrs. 3mins. 3hrs. 57mins. 3hrs. 52mins.

All Courses

Embedded Ball Lifting an embedded ball anywhere “Through the Green” is permitted. See the USGA’s 2019-20 Rules of Golf Book (Appendix 1, page 101) for complete definition.

Penalty Areas Penalty areas are denoted by red stakes. Where the margin of penalty area is irregular (not straight), the area line is deemed to be where the ground breaks down to the water.

Distance Measuring Devices The use of distance measuring devices is permitted by the Committee. However, the use of devices that gauge or measure other conditions which might affect a player’s play (e.g. wind or gradient) is not permitted (USGA 14-3/0.5).

Village Course

Provisional Ball for Ball in Penalty Area This local rule applies only to the second penalty area on hole #17 (where the ferry crosses). If you are unable to determine if your ball is in the hazard or is playable, you may hit a provisional ball to save time. In such a case, if the original ball is in the penalty area, you may either play the original ball as it lies or continue with the pro- visional ball as the ball in play. You may not proceed under the penalty area rule for relief with the original ball (Rule 26-1, Appendix 1, page 100).

Preferred Lies This local rule applies only to holes #7 and #18. A ball lying in the fairway inside the marker established for this purpose may be lifted, cleaned and placed within a club length of the original lie, but no closer to the hole. This rule is not in operation during play in individual tournaments.

39 Local Course Rules

Environmentally Sensitive Areas

The following excerpts from the Rules of Golf, Appendix I, pages 103-106, apply to the areas of the golf course from which play is prohibited. Note: These hazards are identified by red stakes with green tops.

Holes at Old Trail with Environmentally Sensitive Areas The penalty areas on the following holes are designated as environmentally sensitive areas. Medal Course: #9 left, #11 right, #12 right, #16 left and #18 right. Match Course: #2 left, #3 right & left, #4 right, #12 right and #13 right & left.

Ball in Environmentally Sensitive Areas If a ball is in, or there is reasonable evidence that it is lost in, an environmentally sensitive area which is defined as a penalty areas, the player must, under penalty of one stroke, proceed under Rule 26-1 (lateral water hazard rule).

Note: If a ball, dropped in accordance with Rule 26, rolls into a position where the environmentally sensitive area interferes with the player’s stance or the area of his intended swing, the player must take relief as provided in Clause III of this Local Rule.

Interference with Stance or Area of Intended Swing Interference by an environmentally sensitive area occurs when such a condition interferes with the player’s stance or the area of his intended swing. If interference exists, the player must take relief as follows. The General Area: If the ball lies through the green, the point on the course nearest to where the ball lies shall be determined when a) it is not nearer the hole, b) it avoids interference by the condition and c) is not in a haz- ard or on a putting green The player shall lift the ball and drop it without penalty within one club length of the point thus determined on a part of the course which fulfills a), b) and c) above.

The ball may be cleaned when so lifted under Clause III above. Exception: A player may not obtain relief under Clause III of this Local Rule if: (a) it is clearly unreasonable for him/her to play a stroke because of interference by anything other than a condition covered by this Local Rule or (b) interference by such a condition would occur only through use of an unnecessarily abnormal stance, swing or direction of play.

Re-Dropping If a dropped ball rolls into a position covered by this local Rule or a position covered by Rule 20-2 (c), it shall be re-dropped without penalty. If the ball, when re-dropped, rolls into such a position, it shall be placed as near as possible to the spot where it first struck a part of the course when re-dropped. Exception: A ball dropped under Clause II (above) shall not be re-dropped if the environmentally sensitive area interferes with the player’s stance or the areas of his intended swing. The player must take relief as provided in Clause III of this Local Rule.

40 Handicap Committee

Penalty for Breach of Rule

Two Strokes Note: In the case of a serious breach of this Local Rule, the Committee may impose a penalty of disqualification. As participants in the Game of Golf, we all recognize that a mainstay of the game is the honesty, integrity and sportsmanship that we practice as players that helps make the game so enjoyable and rewarding for our companions, our competitors, and ourselves. In an effort to clarify some commonly asked questions regarding handicaps and the handicap system, the Committee has prepared the following Handicap Sec- tion. We hope you find it helpful. Note: Please remember that posting your score is not an option, it is an obligation!

Proper Score Posting

What scores can be used for handicapping? A golfer is required to post scores whenever he/she plays at least 7 holes. If 9 to 13 holes are played, then that score shall be posted as a 9-hole round. If 14 or more holes are played, it shall be posted as an 18-hole round.

Maximum Hole Score (Net Double Bogey)

Handicap strokes received Net Double Bogey Par 2 = + +/- or given on a hole

A player with a Course Handicap of 11 receives one stroke on the first 11 allocated strike holes. On a par-4 hole with a stroke index of 6, the player’s net double bogey score is calculated as follows:

Par Two Strokes (Double Bogey) Stroke(s) Received Max 4 + 2 + 1 = 7

This puts a precedence on knowing your course handicap prior to your round of golf

If a player does not finish a hole or is conceded a stroke, what should the player record? The player shall record his/her “most likely score.”

What is the “most likely score” a player should record on a hole that is not finished or that is conceded? The most likely score consists of the number of strokes already taken plus, in his/her best judgment, the number of strokes that the player would need to complete the hole from that position more than half the time. For example, a player lies five when he picks up on the green. The player will record a score of five plus the number of putts the player thinks he/she would have taken.

Should a “most likely score” be recorded on a hole not finished in a best ball event? Yes.

41 Handicap Committee

What is the hole score a player would record on a hole that is not played? The hole score is par plus any handicap strokes the player is entitled to receive on the hole. For example, a player with a Course Handicap of 10 receives handicap strokes on the first 10 handicap stroke holes. Suppose the player quits after playing 13 holes. For any of the holes 14-18 that are handicap strokes holes for this player, the player shall record a score of par plus one. For any hole on which the player receives no handicap strokes, the hole score shall be recorded as par.

Failure to Post a Score

What should the Committee do if a player inadvertently fails to post an acceptable score? The Handicap Committee may post the score and/or post a penalty score.

How does the Committee arrive at the penalty score? If the score not posted was unusually low, the Committee will post a penalty score equal to the lowest handicap differential in the player’s scoring record.

Can the Handicap Committee adjust a player’s Handicap Index? Yes. It is the Handicap Committee’s responsibility to assure that a player’s Handicap Index reflects his or her potential ability. When the scheduled Handicap Index Revision does not reflect potential ability, the Handicap Committee should adjust it.

What circumstances should result in an adjustment to a Handicap Index? Under the following circumstances, it will be necessary for the Handicap Committee to make adjustments to the player’s Handicap Index: • Improving faster than the System can react • Numerous away scores change Handicap Index • Temporary disability (local handicap only) • Failure to post • Player manipulates round

Note: The Committee is not limited to making changes in these cases only. The Committee must invite a response from the player, in person or in writing.

Can the Handicap Committee withdraw a player’s USGA Handicap Index? Yes. Repeated failure to follow System requirements can result in a withdrawal of a Handicap Index. As with the adjustment of a Handicap Index, the Committee must invite a response from the player, in person or in writing. The Committee sets the conditions for reinstatement of the Handicap Index.

Posting Scores online

May I post my scores via the internet? It is now possible to post scores online utilizing GHIN. By accessing the GHIN website via the ForeTees homepage (bottom of left hand column) , you can enter scores from home just as if you were in the Golf Shop. Scores may also be posted using the GHIN App. Please ask any member of the Golf Staff for help if you have a problem.
