2. The Ring - Project Description The Ring is a new and exciting arts programme which will celebrate a 21 mile circle of natural and historic waterways. Following route of the Worcester and Birmingham Canals, the Droitwich Canals and the the route flows through the towns of Worcester and Droitwich and the countryside which surrounds them. For the next two years, international, regional and local artists will lead an imaginative exploration of ’s urban and rural heritage; the people that live here and their dreams for the future. On foot, by boat or bicycle, visitors will be able to navigate new art and performances in historic and picturesque locations inspired by culture, stories and secrets of The Ring. The Ring seeks to play a critical role in developing the arts in Worcestershire longer term by:  Attracting high level creative producers and artists to deliver a world-class programme and create opportunities for local artists and arts organisations to deliver programme elements or work alongside more experienced artists  Increasing and diversifying audiences for the arts in the West Midlands by delivering creative programmes in non-arts spaces such as canals attracting local people and regional/national visitors through a targeted marketing/PR campaign  Providing a wealth of formal and informal learning opportunities through our engagement programme, for 4,615 artists, local people and students from schools, colleges and Universities in Worcestershire to have creative experiences and visit artworks by renowned artists  Demonstrating how the arts can make an impact economically, socially and culturally  Providing a platform to promote the arts in Worcestershire  Exciting and inspiring high-level decision makers to collaborate on future programmes working across tourism, arts education and academic partners

Arts events and activities will focus around the six gateways sites listed below (see map in Appendices): Diglis Canal Basins: A short walk from Worcester City centre. Diglis Canal Basins lie at the junction of the Worcester-Birmingham Canal and the River Severn, with the layout largely the same as they did in 1815, providing extensive wharfage for bulky commodities such as timber and coal. Former Site of Royal Worcester Porcelain Works: The site is perhaps best known as being the location where Royal Worcester was established in 1751. Porcelain works were produced on the site through to the early 21st century The Commandery: Close to Sidbury , in the mediaeval heart of Worcester the Commandery is a complex of timber framed buildings formerly a pre-Reformation monastic hospital. This was the HQ of the Royalist army during the Battle of Worcester in 1651 and is now a public visitor attraction. Hanbury Canal Junction (top lock): Junction of the historic W & B canal and Droitwich Canal Junction. Hawford Canal Junction (Mill): This is the gateway to the Droitwich Barge Canal from the River Severn. This canal running from the Severn to Netherwich Basin was constructed as a broad waterway, capable of taking sailing from the Severn Estuary. Netherwich (Vines Park): Located in central Droitwich the Droitwich Barge canal enters a small basin. This site was the terminus of the Barge Canal where larger vessels came in to pick up salt from the brine springs. The Ring is part of The Canal & River Trust’s Arts on the Waterways programme.
