CHAPTER – 4

4.0 GEOLOGY AND EXPLORATION 4.1 TOPOGRAPHY AND DRAINAGE PATTERN The topography of permit area is sloping towards west. Average spot level of the site is 101.516m.

4.2 GENERAL GEOLOGY The area is comprised of sedimentary formations of quaternary and tertiary age and is underlain by metamorphic rocks of archean age. Sand and Sandy clay of fluvitile origin represent the quaternary formations. The tertiaries consist of ferruginous soil, laterite, sand stone, pale red clay, clayey sand stone, and sands. The underlying crystallines i.e, garnetiferrous quartzofelspathic gneiss are kaolinsed forming residual kaolinitic zone below the sedimentary cover. The surface plan and geological plan & section showing excavation are shown in plate No 2 and 3.

4.3 LOCAL/ MINE AREA GEOLOGY

The plot is a plain land devoid of vegetation which was earlier planted with coconut tree. There are no rivers or streams passing through the area or within a radius of 1 km.

CHAPTER – 5

5. METHOD OF RESERVE ESTIMATION:

The entire applied area is considered as mineralized. The following points have been considered while calculating the mineable reserve of Ordinary Earth.

The reserve of the mineable ordinary earth has been estimated using the following method:-

a) AREA OF THE PROPOSED QUARRYING AREA * AVERAGE DEPTH OF QUARRYING (6)

= 1090 * 6

= 6540 cu.m

CHAPTER – 6 MINING

6. MINING Quarrying of ordinary earth is proposed to be carried out by adopting slice plan method and is an open caste semi-mechanized quarry.

CHAPTER – 7

7. EXCAVATION The top soil, if any, will be removed with the help of JCB/manually and store it on a marked place, which will be used for concurrent back filling. After obtaining the plain surface, marking will be done on the ground according to the size of the building stone to be removed. Then using blade mounted Tiller, cuttings will be done along the marking. Then by using axe/ Chisel etc the stones will be separated and then shaped. a) Loading and Transportation Loading of the stone will be done manually. Trucks / Tippers of 10T will be used for transportation of stone from mine site. It is expected that 18-20 trips will be required to transport on daily basis. For this, movement of truck per hour will be 2-3 only. Thus, the impact due to movement of trucks from the mine will be marginal.

b) Mineral Processing There is no mineral processing in this ordinary earth quarry. The earth whatever removed from the area will be transported to its destination point.

c) Safety Precautions To Be Adopted The mine is going to be developed mainly opencast method. No major crushing or pulverization will be done here. The small-scale mining will not have any ill effects on the health of labour. Excessive dust and noise are the chief health hazards for the miners. As already mentioned these causative factors are well within the safety limits and the proponents will strictly implement the prescribed safety measures. The health of the workers will be regularly checked and suitable medical facilities should be created on or close to the site. Highest safety will be ensured in the working conditions of the miners. 9

d) No. Of trees to be uprooted due to quarrying operation The programme of eco-restoration for the life of mine, some number of trees would be uprooted.

e) Man power It is proposed to excavate the ordinary earth by deploying excavator considering the agency and volume of work to be carried out by the permit holder. The total number of employees including skilled and un-skilled workers is 12 which include workers for mine and ancillary unit.

f) Site Services There is no infrastructure is available in the mine area.

g) Use Of Mineral Usually ordinary earth is mined for leveling of ground for construction of buildings. The proposed mining project will accomplish its requirement for the construction of buildings, bridges, paving, monuments and many other exterior projects. However, for the construction of roads and other infrastructure, ordinary earth as mined after obtaining quarrying permit from the Department of Mining and Geology. Mining and transporting ordinary earth/soil without the permission of Department of Mining and Geology is an offence. Department issues pass for transport of ordinary earth. Dealer’s license is not issued for ordinary earth as it is not considered as a mineral mined for commercial purposes.

CHAPTER – 8 ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PLAN

8.1 ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PLAN Attach a note on the base line information with regard to the following: Existing land use pattern including the area already degraded due to quarrying, pitting, dumping roads, processing unit, workshop, town ship etc in a tabular statement. ACTIVITY MITIGATION MEASURES

Land Use Pattern Any mining activity may alter the land use in the area. In this case also due quarrying of Ordinary Earth, the permitted area will be degraded. This area after the removal of ordinary earth will be leveled so as to use the land for agricultural purposes. Water Regime An impact due to soil erosion during monsoon period is significant in nature. Siltation due to runoff/ storm water may cause adverse impact on water regime. A drainage channel will be formed and the runoff/ storm water will be collected and will be disposed to the natural drainage in due course. Flora And Fauna There is no flora and fauna species are in the permitted area which are in the listed category or scheduled species category. Air Quality, The air quality will not be affected due to ordinary earth

Ambient Noise quarrying and concentration of SPM, SO2 NOX and CO will Level And Water be within the permissible limit. The noise produced while movement of trucks and excavator will be controlled by proper maintenance of machinery and equipments.

Climate The permitted are falls in the midland geography of Kerala Condition State. It has reasonable rain fall with temperature varying from moderate in summer to slightly chilly in winter. Human There is no human settlement in the permitted area. Settlement Public places, There are no places of worship and monuments are in the places of worship permitted area or within 50m radius. and monuments

8.2 ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTASSESSMENT STATEMENT:

Air Quality Quarrying and removal of Ordinary earth from the permitted area will generate certain quantities of duct due to excavation, loading and movements of trucks. To mitigate the fugitive dust from different operations, the following measures will be taken: i. Watering the haul roads and other roads at regular intervals. ii. Dust filters/ masks to workers will be provided. iii. Green belt all along the periphery will be made if the operation continued for more periods. Water Quality The water quality in the permitted area will not be affected due to quarrying of ordinary earth. Noise Level The noise produced during quarrying operation will be controlled by proper maintenance of machinery and equipments. Vibration level As there is no blasting and drilling is to be carried out due to blasting during the quarrying of ordinary earth from the permitted area no vibration may occur.

CHAPTER – 10 PROGRESSIVE QUARRY CLOSURE PLAN

i. Mined Out Land This is an open cast mechanized quarry of ordinary earth, hence it is proposed to adopt a slice plan method of quarrying by making horizontal benches leaving a buffer zone of 7.5m all along the periphery of the area. Since the quarrying operation is yet to start mined out area could not be delineated at this stage.

ii. Water Quality Management There is no surface water or ground water is available in the applied area and hence no measures are required to protect the water quality. However, necessary precautions will be taken to protect the water quality of the nearby natural drainage.

iii. Air Management Ambient air quality in the applied area will be monitored.

iv. Waste Management The applicant is intent to quarry the ordinary earth for construction and hence there is no waste to be managed.

v. Top Soil Management The top soil also will be quarried along with the mineral which will be used for construction and hence no top soil management issue will arise.

vi. Tail Dam Management There is no processing unit/beneficiation plant in the applied area for further up-gradation of this mineral no tail dam management is required.

vii. Safety and Security The permitted area will be properly fenced and security staff will be posted for as a part of security measures to prevent access to the surface openings, excavation etc.

viii. Disaster Management And Risk Assessment Quarrying of ordinary earth in this quarry is an open cast one. The risk of accident are envisaged due to the operation of equipment, failure of quarry pit, collapses of side wall due to debris on the edges and so on. So no loose stone or debris will be allowed to remain near the edge of the quarry pit. However good safety practices will be adopted at the site and to meet the minor accidents/ incidents first-aid measures at site will be provided.

ix. Economic Repercussion Of Closure Of Quarry And Man Power Retrenchments The applicant is looking for few more locations for few more locations for quarrying of ordinary earth for their on-going development work. In such cases the applicant may consider the existing man power for the new sit.

x. Socio-Economic Benefits Arising Out Of The Quarrying Quarrying of ordinary earth is an open cast mechanized quarrying operation. The permit holder is planning to deploy excavator and tippers for this operation and hence it may require skilled and semi-skilled workers.

FINANCIAL ASSURANCE As per rule 62 of KMMC Rules, 2015 a bank guarantee for Rs. 100000/- in favour of the Director of Mining and Geology will be submitted.
