Quick thinking by a member of the public resulted in a good capture by Te Kuiti and local Police. Two Aucklanders were arrested with tfhousands of dollars worth of cigarettes and tobacco in their car on the back road from Otorohanga after a call came in to *555. The member of the public driving past New World Supermarket in Te Kuiti saw a male jump into a vehicle and drive off at speed. The witness noticed the front door of the supermarket smashed in and made the call with details of the vehicle.

Paul and Kathie Hobbs who have fi lled a number of key roles in Grey Power for a number of years have gone in to care due to bad health. This has left a large gap in this organisation and we need to elect a Treasurer/Secretary as well as committee members at the Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 17th April, 2012. We have 1200 local memebers and we need a good turnout for the A.G.M. If these positions are not fi lled, some major decisions on the club future will have to be made. Well done to Allan Webb and staff and sup- porters of The Regent Theatre for the fine celebration of its 80th birthday last week. My wife Robyn and I were fortunate to be able to attend the two evening premiere screenings The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and First Night and enjoy the pre-screening entertainment. Guest speakers were movie columnist Richard Swainson and film and theatre buff Hilton Woodroffe. Mr Webb gave a brief background of the history of The Regent Theatre and local entertain- ment was provided by David O’Brien, Te Awa- mutu College Guitar Ensemble and Alice Gower. Earlier session attendees heard from cinema researcher Leigh Leslie and singer Hannah Adams. While we enjoyed birthday cake we viewed two new movies. I thought the best by far was The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, a terrific film with a great UK and Indian cast and a lovely story. I thoroughly recommend it. First Night hasn’t had the best reviews, but it was more than watchable and had some truly funny moments — as well as opera. Help celebrate the birthday of New Zealand’s longest running provincial cinema by supporting these and other great film offerings. Motivational guest

Author Allison Mooney will be guest speaker in the Assembly of God Church on March 23. The experienced international speaker is known for her ability to inspire people in high profile New Zealand companies. ‘‘Regardless of what organisation we are in, the common thread is that we all deal with people. ‘‘Business transformation occurs when we understand, respect and celebrate each other’s differences. ‘‘By undertsanding what motivates us we find greater significance in who we are and value what we do, resulting in greater productivity.’’ Ms Moonie has won numerous speaking awards and is the author of the book ‘Pressing the Right Buttons’. If you would like to hear her speak, the evening begins at 7pm ($10 entry). Kihikihi roadworks under scrutiny A reader recently wrote questioning roadworks in Kihikihi and questioning the finish. The street in question was Grey Street, which the reader said had undergone repairs, then some resealing — but not all the street. Waipa District manager road corridor Dawn Inglis reports the roads mentioned have had heavy maintenance patches completed on them in preparation for resealing. She says the resealing work will be completed, weather permitting, this month. She says a large area required reconstruction and a chipseal coat was applied. A second seal coat is needed to waterproof the area, which will completed by Council’s resealing contractor. What do YOU think? It is a rarity for a player with a 59 net to be pipped for honours in the Sunday scramble at Pirongia Golf Club. But that occurred at the weekend when Tom Moke shot a 58 net to upstage Rob Goodhew by one shot. Kevin Appleby (68 net) couldn’t believe his luck to draw Moke as his partner for the Captain’s Trophy — which they duly won. The Bill Innes putting competition was won by Graeme Tocker, who managed his way around the 18 holes with only 22 putts. Pirongia’s VetEnt sponsored Prebble Cup team have been eliminated from the main draw after losing 6.5-5.5 to the Narrows Golf Club. They will now set their sights on going one better than last year by winning the Tolich Trophy. The VetEnt Pirongia championship pennant team were beaten 5-4 at home for the first time in four years by Hauraki. Pirongia’s only foursomes win was posted by the No. 1 pairing of Dave Seager and Marco Bouwman, 3/2. Kevin Appleby and Gary Bowman, along with We’re Tyne Watts and Andrew Parsons, went down 4/3. The afternoon singles saw Seager and Kevin Appleby comfortably win their matches 4/3. Tyne Watts lost 3/2, while Gary Bowman also went down 4/3. Marco Bouwman had a tight tussle with his counterpart, squaring the match with a win on the opening 18th. Andrew Parsons also managed to square his match with a win on the 18th. The next round has VetEnt Pirongia playing away against Tahuna. The VetEnt Pirongia handicap pennant team fared better in their first round held at Waitomo. They are doors for sitting in third spot, 2.5 shots off leaders Tirau and 16 shots ahead of fifth placed Tokoroa.
