GW PLAYER PROFILE FIRST TEAM - JUNE RECAP

On June 1, 2008 the Green White First Team hosted 0-2 the Chicago Sockers at Majewski Park. From the start the young Sockers had the home team on their heels. Ten minutes into the match it took a sliding save from Kurt Melcher to thwart the surging Sockers. The defense, anchored by Bunnyray Larmond, An- thony Derose, Jim Romano, Brandon Hardy and Sean Connor, held strong through the first half to enter the break knotted at zero. The second half saw more of the same and it again took a quick reac- tion from Melcher to parry away a first time strike served in from the KLAUS KILIAN, Defender right and then another to push back a point blank shot from 8 yards Born: Gelsenkirchen, Germany 1938 Nickname: “Killer” - so dubbed by Hans out. Meanwhile, Bunnyray Lar- mond was in good voice directing the defense seeing Jimmy Romano and Anthony Derose growing in confidence. Limna found a posting Mitreski who dropped the ball back to Brendan Connor. Connor then beat his man and drove the left end line, crossing the ball to the middle where it sailed over the head of Mitreski, screaming for a push in the back, and landed at the feet of a wide open Eric Spiess. Spiess left no doubt as he ham- mered it home for the 1-0 lead. Thereafter, the pace began to quicken for the visitors. From there he took one step and beat the keeper at the near post to match Mitreski with a brace on the day. Unfortunately, the soccer gods did not cooperate as Eagles played a make- up game against Vikings on Tuesday, June 24, 2008, losing by a shocking score of 3-1. With the title mathematically out of reach, all incentives were lost for the Eagles as they turned around to play Schwaben on Thursday, June 24, 2008, losing that game 2-0. As a result, Schwaben topped Green White in the standings on goal differential relegating Green White to the First Division next season.

RESERVE TEAM - JUNE RECAP

The month of June proved dissatisfying for the Reserve 2-5 Team as several of their matches were rained out without makeup. On June 22, 2008; however, they were able to slip in a match against Vikings. Like the First Team match, the Reserve game produced a cornucopia of goals. It was the Vikings; however, who got on the board first as Viking forward Richie Gilford cracked a blistering shot from 25 yards to beat an outstretched Mike Magner to the right corner. The lead was short lived; however, as Jon Duddles pounced upon a spilled save by the keeper to knot the game at 1-1. In reply, Gilford notched his second after fighting off a strong challenge from Jake Truty before slotting Mag- ner at the five hole. In a developing tit-for-tat, Duddles poached the equalizer before the intermission after the keeper mishandled a shot by Neaman Lewis. Thereafter, it was all Vikings as they scored three unan- swered goals, including a third by Gilford that was nearly thwarted by a

OVER 30 TEAM - JUNE RECAP

The Green White Over 30 Team took on Cracovia at Ma- 3-0 jewski Park on June 14, 2008. Cub field reporter Greg Boltz missed the first 20 minutes but otherwise reported that Green White were the better team all around the pitch. Gabby was back between the pipes. Derrick Wilkinson scored on a nice through ball from Keith Anderson at the 35 minute mark. With the Cracovia goalie frozen on his line, Derrick ran from nearly midfield and slotted the ball to the far side to go up 1-0. Green White continued to dominate possession through the first half. Although not very sharp on the final pass, the pace was controlled by Green White. A new backline combination of Grant Smale, John Parsi- nen, Alex Vega and Pat Palbicke was solid and kept Cracovia at bay. Af- ter a nice long throw-in flicked on by Keith Anderson, Wilkinson missed a chance to double the lead as his timing was just off enough to see the ball hit off his plant leg and away from the goal. His luck would change for the better just minutes later. Rob Czop received a ball on the right wing and advanced up the field. When confronted by two defenders Czop chipped the ball in to an onrushing Wilkinson who deftly one-timed the ball past the bewildered Cracovia keeper. A trend was emerging and things contin- ued in Green White's favor as Wilkinson latched onto another ball played across the Cracovia goalmouth, this time by Herb Sherry. Wilkinson once again found the back of the net and earned the hat trick. To honor his accomplishment the club served “Derrick Dogs” at the Green White Fam- ily Day cookout that followed the match. On June 14, 2008 the Over 40s hosted Hrvat on Green 1-2 White Family Day at Majewski Park. From the outset, the home team was licking their chops at the sight of their considerably older opponent. And in fact, Green White was able to move the ball around the field on the slowed and aged visitors, but the final result was testament to the adage that you can’t win if you can’t finish. The first blown opportu- nity saw Todd Schneider do well to go in on goal alone, but he hesitated from 5 yards and put the ball of the keeper’s shin. His header from the resulting corner kick was no closer to the mark either. The game saw other near misses too. Notably, George Lymperis tried to play a cross off his knee/shin that missed. Pat Nash received a nice pass from Dan Ro- gan, but his header skipped wide. Mark Stein gave a go with a free kick from the top of the box, but it was collected by the keeper. Of course, it was not as though the defense was setting the world on fire either. In the first half, the back line seemed tentative and hesitant in reacting to the ball. A little half time kick in the rear from John Dunkas eliminated that prob- lem in the second half. Also of note, Bob Hynes filled in between the pipes and faired well, particularly on a shot from beyond the midline that he strategically allowed to hit the cross bar and carom off the back of his head before collecting. The evening was not all bad. Green White was able to get on the board as Todd Schneider played Mark Stein through for what was at the time the tying goal. Unfortunately, Green White gave up a second with 20 minutes to play and could not find the equalizer. To sum up the game, 11 year old Maddie Nash commented, “There was a lot less swearing on Family Day.” And that was a good thing.

On June 21, 2008 the Green White Over 40 Team made the 3-3 long trek to Lockport, Illinois to take on the Youths. The Youths were first to get on the board but not long thereafter Green White equalized on a free kick taken by Slobodan “Bobo” Gracanin. Bobo’s

Green White took the lead in the second half as Roni Arusi picked out Mark Stein out wide on the left where Stein was able to beat his man and send the ball into the far side netting. The green gang extended their lead to 3-1 when Mike Grosse took advantage of a defense that continued to back away from him. Grosse accepted the gratuity by waltzing in with the ball and picking out the left corner. Un- fortunately, Green White was unable to hold the lead, giving back two un- answered. In the end, controversy reigned as the referee awarded Green White a penalty kick for a foul on Todd Schneider. After setting down the ball for the spot kick, the referee was either lobbied or threatened by the sideline; changed his mind and moved the ball out to the edge of the box for a free kick. As contentious and antagonistic as the home team was

ILLINOIS STATE CUP (OVER 30)

On June 10, 2008, Green White played Palatine Celtics in 3-1 the quarterfinals of the Illinois Over 30 State Cup. Start- ing for Green White from back to front were Kurt Melcher, Chris Wellman, Keith Anderson, Nick Paul, Colum Donahue, Rob Czop, Jamie Limna, Tim McBride, Chris Salatino, John Parsinen and Jake Truty. With John Dunkas and an injured Greg Boltz directing the troops from the sidelines, the first 20 minutes of the match proved a tentative feeling out period. Celtics had the first real opportunity of the match as John Tovar got inside his defender to unleash a shot that forced Kurt Mel- cher to sprawl and smother. Indeed, the always dangerous Tovar proved to be a handful all night but Keith Anderson and Nick Paul were well up to the task in the middle defense. On 25 minutes, Green White began to click as Rob Czop whipped in one of his signature pinpoint crosses to pick out John Parsinen whose diving effort went narrowly wide. Undeterred, Parsinen would be heard from again. Shortly before the half, the sideline brain trust introduced Mike Pelegrino and Chris Doran to the game. The strategic substitution proved dividends immediately as Pelegrino launched a throw-in to the far stick where it was met by a rising Parsinen who whipped it down with his head into the corner for the goal as Dunkas and Boltz marveled at their own genius. Pelegrino and Parsinen nearly dou- bled the lead before the half on a set piece from the corner, but the near post effort was snuffed out on the goal line. Nevertheless, Green White found their second on a sublime strike from Chris Doran a minute after the second half restart. The build-up commenced as Jamie Limna, con- trolling the game from his perch in midfield, found Doran in space on the

The buildup was promising but Salatino, never quite able to catch up to the ball, could only send his cross into the side netting. Through 20 minutes Green White had the better of play on both ends as Chris Wellman and Keith Anderson continued to sniff out and cut off all offensive forays. Midway through the first half, Brandon Hardy played Limna bearing down on goal. Limna cut back to shake off the clos- ing defender, but with the ball on his weaker foot, his shot was easily gathered by the keeper. The few op- portunities presented by the opposition were all quickly fisted away by a confident Kurt Melcher, right. With the Celtic defense anticipating a cross to with the exception of one cross that he literally picked the crowd of Tim McBride, Parsinen and Pelegrino off an opponent’s head. With the victory, Green White advanced to the semi-finals against Concordia.

On June 18, 2008, Green White and 1-4 Concordia faced off at Benedictine University in the semi-finals of the Illinois Over 30 State Cup. Starting for Green White were Kurt Mel- cher, Chris Wellman, Keith Anderson, Nick Paul, Brandon Hardy, Chris Doran, Tim McBride, Ja- mie Limna, Chris Salatino, John Parsinen and Tom Czop. The match started on a brisk pace. The first Green White opportunity came on 12 minutes as Tom Czop, finally shaking the injury bug that had

While disappointed with the loss, the editorial board could not let pass comment on the comical turn of the match which came shortly into the second half as Sean Con- nor was struck with a hip pointer. There was certainly nothing funny about the foul or the injury, but the re- sulting sequelae from Connor as he tried to walk off the pain, resembled something of a cross between a duck walk and an audition for the role of The Penguin in the next Batman movie.
