Moving into the cooler months of the year will hopefully see more trips find their way into the trip Calendar, and see more trip leaders willing to take our members on some trips. With some long weekends coming up soon, it is always a great time to plan a trip somewhere you have been planning to go for some time, as we are always looking for more trip leaders to help take the load off others.

One place to go is the we- Leaser over the Easter weekend , where we will be having a maintenance day on the Saturday to fix up the path in front of the toilets, cut up the fallen trees for firewood, and generally clean up to keep this great asset to the club in great condition. This would be a fantastic opportunity for NEW Members to come along for the weekend to help and to socialise with other members and introduce yourself around the campfire with a beverage. I'm sure there will be some trips out to the surrounding areas for those wishing to see what's on offer around Dungog.

For the past few years, we have been seeing more and more members renewing their memberships later and later in the year, and some trying as much as 7 Months after the due date. Just a reminder that the membership fees are due by the end of August, as per our Constitution, or you may have to rejoin the club again, and pay the joining fee as a new member. WHY you ASK ! As a unfinancial member after August, you are putting the club at risk, as unfinancial members are NOT covered by the clubs insurance if you attend club events or trips.

Just a reminder that our Vice President is running a New Members trip in March, and is a great opportunity to meet other club members and new members alike. So I look forward to seeing as many clubbers as possible at the lease or on a trip, have fun.

Editorial

Once again, my job has been made easier with all of the trip reports and photos coming in, in time for me to finalise the club magazine in time for the printers.

We have been having great attendances at our General Club Meetings on the Thursday nights with an average of between 80 and 90 members. Last month we had 11 visitors as well.

Keep an eye out for the latest club magazines which are sent out via email on the Monday before the General Club Meeting. If there are any trips that you are interested in attending, don’t hesitate to call the Trip Leader and book your spot as they do fill up quickly.

Page 25 has some trivial information on our club, what they drive, what fuel is used and where we live. So make sure that you check it out. 3 Regards Brian Central Coast Four Wheel Drive Club Inc. General Meeting Minutes Thursday 12th February 2015

The short version is – if you weren’t there, you should have been.

8 You missed a great trip to a beautiful location. Friday was an early start for some (5.30am departure for us) to get to the Pt Macquarie Service Centre McDonalds. A quick coffee heart starter then off to ARB for beach permits. We were given dire warnings by ARB staff of fines for not displaying permit stickers before they promptly ran out of stickers to issue. Onto the ferry at Settlement Point, air down, onto North Beach and the journey proper starts. A run up the beach and we arrived at Point Plomer. We set up camp, some fished, and some swam or walked, or just relaxed. Whatever the activity it was definitely how Fridays should be spent. Our ‘happy hour’ was a great way to end the afternoon – beach views, a pleasant breeze and great conversation. Tony had prayed and danced to the weather gods. We thought he had made the appropriate supplications. Dinners were being prepared, the fire was lit and the camp gathering commenced. Then it poured. After a few attempts to resist the rain we gradually drifted off for an early night. Saturday was another early start to ensure we made the best of the tides. The weather was perfect and just promised to get better. Our ‘on vehicle’ campers had the joy of parking up ready to get going. In the excitement Tracey Knight Taylor tripped and hurt her back. Plenty of help on hand to make her comfortable before she and Tappie decided it was better to head home – maybe Valentines Day had something to do with it (I‘m sure there is a pun in there somewhere).

For the rest it was a short drive to Crescent Head. Coffee for some, fuel for others and an ambulance for Tracey Kerle. Bev spoke paramedic, the rest just said thank you and wished Tracey a speedy recovery. Alan and Tracey were thankfully back with us that afternoon. Onto Killick Beach and we headed north. We stopped at an unnamed lake, beautiful sight but you sink in the sand if you stand still – it caught a few by surprise. Off the beach and into Hungary Camping Area (in ) for a quick peek, one definitely to return to. Then onto Smokey Beach, watch for the gutters and off at Smokey Cape. We got our day’s exercise walking up to the

lighthouse where we could have spent all day taking in the views north and south. Lunch in a nearby campground where there was shade then back onto the beach to retrace our steps.

Back to Crescent Head for beer and ice cream, a quick look see at Racecourse Beach and back to Point Plomer for a swim or nap or whatever was your The short version is – if you weren’t there, you should have been. pleasure.

You missed a great trip to a beautiful location. 9 ‘Happy hour’ again then dinner before chairs around an awesome fire fed by Lyn – she did a great job keeping us warm and amused.

Sunday started with a leisurely pack up, a walk to the lookout and watching pods of dolphins chasing breakfast. Then it was time to go. Onto North Beach one more time, off at Settlement Point, onto the ferry and a stop at McDonalds for lunch and goodbyes.

Swimmers and beach walkers were in the minority compared to the number of fishermen and surfers enjoying the area. With so much beach it was easy to find a spot just for us. We would have travelled close to 100km on the beaches, all with safety due to Tony’s directions and advice. No one was bogged or lost. A testament to good planning and preparation.

Faye warned us of oncoming vehicles including make and model, year of manufacture, estimated mileage and resale value – both educational and entertaining. Thanks also to Bev for shepherding us as tail-end Charlie and for stepping in with the health scares. In summary a great trip, three days means there was time to relax, the company was great, the location was perfect and the travel was safe. In short, you should have been there.

Thanks Tony and Faye.

10 Driver Awareness-Stage 2 Held on 7th - 8th February 2015

After a long week at work, we packed up the truck and headed off for the We-Leaser to be ready for our driver training starting Saturday at 8.30 am. Greeted by Bob and Monica and the fellow DTU guys, Neil, Steve, Troy and Simon. This team was bravely backed up by Bev, Tappy and Cheryl. Accolades have to be given to these members who tirelessly give up their weekend to assist others in developing their skill and competency in developing their 4x4 driving and recovery techniques.

To begin the morning we did a fairly comprehensive vehicle safety check, as you would each day when heading out 4x4ing. Engine check of all fluids, hoses, belts, radiator, battery and any filters. An interesting task for someone 5ft 1, and definitely a different perspective than Simon's 6ft 4. At one point he encouraged me to lean over further to get a clearer look at the filter connection. I was already standing on tippy toes on a stool, there was no more further!

Then a check over of the vehicle, a good shake, rattle and roll. Check of the tyres, wheel nuts, under chassis, lights, roof racks and a little hint here, check your recovery and tyre changing facilities as we will write about a little later. A little drawer envy was felt by others in the carrying capacity of a bloody good ute and it's ample space to carry containers of replacement fluids, hoses, belts and bibs and bobs.

We had a refresher on the stall start recovery technique. An important technique to perfect. To refresh others... Step 1- stall the car Step 2- foot on the brake and apply the hand brake Step 3- put the car into reverse Step 4- release the hand break Step 5- slowly release the foot break until the car is holding its own weight Step 6- check behind you, that your rear exit path is clear Step 7- quickly flick the ignition on Step 8- slowly reverse to a more level position.

Next onto changing tyres. Another little hint here. Pack your tyre changing equipment securely, particularly any smaller pieces such as Allen keys or patterned keys to lower your spare etc. You may think you know where a piece is but it can easily rattle and dislodge. Luckily, in our tyre changing exercise there was another Landcruiser 100 series that we could take the spare from. Here we learned that there is an easy technique to changing a tyre! What a handy tool a long handle shovel can be. After learning to carefully chock a car, we practiced walking a tyre in to match the studs then levering the tyre up. Now that was easier than we had done 3 times previously!

We then began to practice our snatch strap recovery. Protocol is such that if needing to be recovered, we use equipment of the stuck vehicle, so long as it is in good condition and appropriately weighted. We each had the opportunity to be recovered and to recover others. This ensured we had the opportunity to feel what it felt like in both situations. As a sideline here, and remembering this is written by a proud Nissan owner, the only problem we had in this exercise was that the Navara refused to be 'stuck!' I drove into the ditch 4 times in an attempt to have one wheel off the ground and no matter the angle, she just rode with the terrain. (Guess that's because she's not a Jeep!) 11 At this point in time it was a well earned break for lunch. Please be sure to ask Bob how his lunch was, and Simon too for that matter. What would they do without Monica and Cheryl? Oh I know, Simon would forget his lunch had been packed in Bob's fridge and Bob would think, wow, not only do I have the makings for a chicken wrap but Mon has left me a wonderful ham sandwich too!

Now it was onto the track work with our friendly trainer on board. The tracks were not difficult, care just had to be taken on wheel placement to negotiate a few larger obstacles. With standard everything on the Nissan and a very low clearance height, I did sadly on one occasion scrape her belly. With Simon and I having a check underneath at the next stop, we realised how few options there were to avoid, sump, diff or transfer case as they sat staggered across the chassis. Well, I'm going to have to be very careful now to perfect that placement as the margin of error is greatly reduced. Over a few minor creek crossings, just to have some fun and then onto track based scenarios of stall starts and tyre changes. The tyre change and snatch practice in puddles made for some dirty fun. The thing to remember is to take that break if needed before making decisions, have a cuppa if that what it takes rather than rushing in to a decision. Sadly no tea break here with Sergeant Bob on the job. Back to base for our Q&A session as the lovely Monica, Cheryl and Bev cooked our yummy BBQ dinner.

Our short break after dinner was then followed up by an easy cruise through tracks to experience the perceptual changes that occur when driving at night. A back creek crossing on this occasion was interesting in the dark. (Where was Troy's nuclear blast bright light bar when you need it?)

The beautiful Dungog night sky shone for us as we finished our evening by the fire. In closing, I'd like to reiterate again what a marvelous job our DTU team does and how very grateful we are for having this opportunity to improve our driving techniques. Many, many thanks to Bob, Neil, Steve, Troy, Simon and their very helpful back up crew of Tappy, Monica, Cheryl and Bev.

13 Stage One Driver Awareness report March 2015

The day was damp and slippery, just the way that we like it. 14

Sunday 22 February saw a group of newcomers to CC4WD club at Cooranbong Community Centre to complete their Stage 1 driver training. The material covered was well presented and educational.

After lunch the rain had sort of stopped so we headed off to Awaba quarry testing out our newly acquired convey procedures. Troy was tail end charlie. At the quarry we let our tyres down and set off to master the art of stall start recovery. A few of us needed a few runs at it.

Then it was off to conquer a few tricky climbs and descents. The rain decided to make this more interesting and slippery. The usual course had to be altered as the final hill was a bit too slippery under the conditions.

We all kept our vehicles in one piece and ourselves. We all had a great time and I think I speak for everyone that attended - we'd like to say a VERY BIG THANKYOU to our diligent and helpful teachers. Bob, Simon, Troy, Neal & Monica Your guidance and support was appreciated.

The day finished around 4pm with us all airing up our tyres.

Cheers, Sue
