We executed the war itself poorly in order to satisfy Secretary of Defense 419-531-7079 Donald Rumsfeld’s notion that a small, quick-striking force was the wave of the future. We executed the war badly because we forgot that we were fighting more than a war, we were trying to rebuild a nation. To that end we left piles of weapons for future insurgents and we dissolved the only institution capable of assisting in that nation building endeavor – the Iraq army. And after the war, when we realized that we would indeed have to hang around because contrary to Cheney’s prognostications the conquered did not greet the conquerors just like the French greeted the Allies in World War II, we erred repeatedly – strategically, tactically, politically, militarily, diplomatically – and in every conceivable manner. We created and grew the insurgency almost daring terrorists to rush to the cause. Indeed, if Osama bin Laden and his followers had tried to craft such an effective battle plan, they could not possibly have foreseen that Americans would have fallen so readily into the trap. The American post-9/11 reaction was most assuredly beyond their wildest dreams. Would wiser men than the Bush people have erred so badly? They were the wise men that Ford relied on for advice when he quit Vietnam. What happened over the years? Obviously such men fell under the delusion that they could do no wrong ... all historical evidence to the contrary. Somehow they remembered Neville Chamberlain’s Munich and forgot everything that happened after that event. So the post-Vietnam, current Iraq lesson is what exactly? It has to be, at least in part, that no one has a monopoly on being correct, even if he has been correct at every other instance in his life, and who among us has been that flawless? Rumsfeld and Cheney have been correct quite a lot in their heretofore successful political and business careers. Pity their big mistake carried such a high price tag. From Custom to Code From Custom to Code A Sociological Interpretation of the Making of Association Football Dominik Döllinger Dissertation presented at Uppsala University to be publicly examined in Humanistiska teatern, Engelska parken, Uppsala, Tuesday, 7 September 2021 at 13:15 for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The examination will be conducted in English. Faculty examiner: Associate Professor Patrick McGovern (London School of Economics). Abstract Döllinger, D. 2021. From Custom to Code. A Sociological Interpretation of the Making of Association Football. 167 pp. Uppsala: Department of Sociology, Uppsala University. ISBN 978-91-506-2879-1. The present study is a sociological interpretation of the emergence of modern football between 1733 and 1864. It focuses on the decades leading up to the foundation of the Football Association in 1863 and observes how folk football gradually develops into a new form which expresses itself in written codes, clubs and associations. In order to uncover this transformation, I have collected and analyzed local and national newspaper reports about football playing which had been published between 1733 and 1864. I find that folk football customs, despite their great local variety, deserve a more thorough sociological interpretation, as they were highly emotional acts of collective self-affirmation and protest. At the same time, the data shows that folk and early association football were indeed distinct insofar as the latter explicitly opposed the evocation of passions, antagonistic tensions and collective effervescence which had been at the heart of the folk version. Keywords: historical sociology, football, custom, culture, community Dominik Döllinger, Department of Sociology, Box 624, Uppsala University, SE-75126 Uppsala, Sweden.

  • ABSTRACT COLLECT by Jacob Carl Harksen This Collection of Poems
ABSTRACT COLLECT by Jacob Carl Harksen This collection of poems seeks to explore the individual’s relation to the self and others, and between the lyric “I” and forms of collectivity, under the duress of 21st-century capitalism. The poems respond to certain political and economic pressures, including namely debt, and assert that poetry can be a meaningful aid in, if not site of, resistance to those pressures. The collection seeks to enact in poetry a political content, which is typically the province of a highly theorized discourse, by direct treatment of the lived world of feeling and belief. A narrative arc is developed over the course of the collection that tracks the radicalization of those feelings and beliefs in the life of an individual as they attempt to make answer to the pressures of capital in a variety of modes and forms. So on "Gimme The Loot" I really wanted to make people think that it was a different person [rhyming with me]. So I be like, "Yeah, well, my job is done." I just got it from Slick though. And Redman did it too, but he didn't change his voice. What is the illest line that you ever heard? Damn ... I heard some crazy shit, dog. I would have to pick somethin' from my shit, though. 'Cause I know I done said some of the most illest rhymes, you know what I'm sayin'? I love that line. There's shit that G Rap done said. And Meth [on "Protect Ya Neck"]: "The smoke from the lyrical blunt make me ugh." Shit like that. I look for shit like that in rhymes. A ‘post-varieties’ (Seargeant and Tagg 2011) analysis of the diversity and hybridity of linguistic production in the YouTube comments finds the notions of codemeshing and plurilingualism (Canagarajah 2009) useful in characterizing the language practices of the Chicanx community of the Southwestern US, while a focus on the linguistic practices of com- menters on Northeastern ‘core’ artists’ tracks validate the use of named language varieties in examining language attitudes and ideologies as they emerge in commenters’ discussions. Finally, this article advances the sociolinguistics of orthography (Sebba 2007) by examining the social meanings of a vast array of creative and novel orthographic forms, which often blur the supposed lines between language varieties. Keywords: Latinx, hip hop, orthography, codemeshing, language contact, language attitudes, language ideologies, computer-mediated discourse.
