The Prehistoric Civilizations of Nuclear America GORDON R. WILLEY H mwd University INTRODUCTION HE native agricultural civilizations of the New World had their begin- Tnings and their highest development in those areas that have been sub- sumed under the term “Nuclear America” (Kroeber 1948: 779). The desig- nation has both a geographical and a cultural connotation. The areas involved embrace central and southern Mexico, Central America, the north Andes, and Peru. This is the axis of aboriginal high culture in the Americas and, as such, the major center of prehistoric diffusion for the western hemisphere. To the best of our knowledge, it stands clearly apart and essentially independent from the comparable culture core of the Old World. Kroeber (1948: 784-85; 1952:377-95) has suggested the analogy between the American civilizational nucleus of Mexico-Peru and the “Oikoumene” of the Old World. Readapting the old Greek concept of the “inhabited” or civil- ized world (Kroeber 1952:379 and 392), he has defined the Oikoumene for purposes of culture-historical analysis as (‘ . the millennially interrelated higher civilizations in the connected mainland masses of the Eastern hemi- sphere,” and “as ’a great web of culture growth, areally extensive and rich in content.” It is, in effect, a vast diffusion sphere (see Hawkes 1954) interlinked across continents by common cultural content. The comparison with Nuclear America seems particularly apt. In both cases the great historic nexuses have considerable time depth at their centers, and in both they have influenced those cultures marginal to them at relatively later points on the time scale. -

(ACI) conducted a cultural resource assessment survey (CRAS) of the approximately 111-acre Peck Sink Storm Water Park Design project area (hereinafter referred to as Peck Sink) in Hernando County, Florida in June and July 2009. The purpose of this survey was to locate and identify any cultural resources within the project area, and to assess their significance in terms of eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). This survey was conducted for the Hernando County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC), and complies with Hernando County’s Comprehensive Plan (effective February 2006). This report also complies with Chapters 267 and 373, Florida Statutes (FS), Florida’s Coastal Management Program, and implementing state regulations regarding possible impact to significant historical properties. This report conforms to the specifications set forth in Chapter 1A-46, Florida Administrative Code (FAC) (revised August 21, 2002) and the Cultural Resource Management Standards and Operational Manual (Florida Division of Historical Resources [FDHR] 2003). Background research and a review of the Florida Master Site File (FMSF) and NRHP indicated that no archaeological sites have been recorded previously within the Peck Sink property. -

THE POSTCLASSIC STAGE IN MESOAMERICA Jane Holden INTRODUCTION The subject of inquiry in this paper is the PostcLassic stage in Middle America. As used by prehistorians, the term "Postclassic" has referred to either a developmental stage or to a chronological period. These two con- cepts are quite different, both operationally and theoretically. The stage concept in contemporary usage is a classificatory device for st,udying cul- ture units in terms of developmental and theoretical problems. For com- parative purposes, a stage is usually defined in broad and diffuse terms, in order to outline a culture type. A developmental stage is not tempor- c3lyl detined although it is necessarily a function of relative time. The chronological period on the other hand is defined through the temporal alignment of culture units and establishes the historical contemporaneity of those units. Thus the developmental stage is a typological device and the chronological period is a temporal unito There is a wealth of material on late pre-Columbian Middle America available sin the chronicles and codices. However, the study of such mater- ials. is a ppecialty in itself, hence only a minimum of historical informa- tion *ill be presented in this paper and this will be of necessity, based on secondary sources. The following procedure will be employed in this paper. First, brief summaries of formal statements by various authors on the developmental stage concept will be presented, as well as some temporal classifications of the Postclassic. Secondly, the available archaeological evidence will be summarized to provide a temporal framework. And finally, consideration will be given to the implications derived from the comparison of the Post- classic as a temporal category and as a developmental stage. -
