We have had a great response to the Academy program which started late last year with 25-30 players between 15-18 years of age that have attended training with the goal of making the Wellington academy 16s and 18s teams. We have a group of 20 players who have attended regularly four times a week where they are pushed to the limit both physically and mentally. These young men have been working hard in the gym during their weight sessions which they do 3-4 times a week before they go out onto the field to do either a fitness, speed or skill session which lasts for 45 minutes to an hour. The Academy is based at Te Wananga o Aotearoa in Porirua and is open to all of those wishing to improve their fitness and skill levels. Next week on the 19th of February at 6pm we have NZRL and NRL welfare officer Joe Harawira coming to talk to the boys about League life in the professional arena as well as talk to parents and offer advice for those who would like to know more about life as a league player, anyone who would like to attend is more than welcome. Peter Rikiriki Newcastle Knights visit The Newcastle Knights have renewed their Wellington relationship with the recently held training camp. Organised by the Te Aroha club in conjunction with Wellington Rugby League, Tamati Whangai and Weltec around 100 local rugby league players had the chance to attend the clinic run by Newcastle Knights legend Michael Hagan who was accompanied by former Kiwi and Knights players Craig Smith and Jeremy Smith along with Troy Prezet, Knights 20s coach. Weltec hosted an evening event on Wednesday where players and families were exposed to the Weltec campus and various courses on offer. The Knights group were there to talk about the long pathway to an NRL career with the overriding message of having a career path outside of rugby league driven by study. Former Knights and Kiwis player David Lomax says the group talked about player development and the benefits of combining high level sporting performance with education. He says a number of prominent Wellington players have ended up at the Knights, starting with its first NRL captain Sam Stewart, who started his career with Wellington club the Randwick Kingfishers. “They’re a really strong rugby league community in Newcastle. I remember when I used to play there it would be 20,000-plus at every game. Coming back to Wellington they do the same thing. Sure they are going to try to create pathways for young people and look at the elite kids and take them away but they also have a sense of community as well which is why they are coming over to talk about education and they are inviting not just the elite kids but all other kids as well so I’m looking forward to it,” Mr Lomax says. The boys were then put through their paces on Thursday morning with the Knights group and many of the boys impressed with their fitness testing results. Wellington Rugby League General Manager, Jason Hemson a born and bred Novocastrian said it was great that the Knights are again looking to build a strong relationship with Wellington. “Over the years there have been strong links between to the 2 regions with players like Sam Stewart, Tony Kemp and John Schuster all from Wellington having written their names in Knights folklore. Even now we have 3 Wellington boys making their mark with the Knights in Jo Tapine, Danny Levi and Pride Petterson-Robati” Tapine and Levi have both played for the Junior Kiwis and played in this year’s NRL Auckland 9s. Auckland 9’s It was like a Wellington reunion in the player’s lounge at the Auckland 9s. Nelson Asofa-Solomona (Storm) Danny Levi, Jo Tapine (Knights) Bureta Faraimo (Eels) Ava Seumanufagai (Tigers) Isaac Luke (Rabbitohs) Ben Matulino(Warriors)Matt Robinson(Titans) Sika Manu, Tupou Sopoaga (Panthers) Sam Tagatese (Sharks) Added to that the Nikorima brothers from Palmy with the Broncos and that’s not a bad group of players. Sir Peter Leitch Club AT MT SMART STADIUM, HOME OF THE MIGHTY VODAFONE WARRIORS 5th September 2018 Newsletter #233 Congratulations to the Vodafone Warriors on making the 2018 NRL Finals Congratulations Simon on playing your 300th game for the Vodafone Warriors we hope you enjoyed the night as we all did. Photos courtesy of www.photosport.nz Bloody, Penrith, Dragons and Broncos...give me a break By David Kemeys Former Sunday Star-Times Editor, Former Editor-in-Chief Suburban Newspapers, Long Suffering Warriors Fan HIS IS why I am not an NRL tipster. TLast week I boldly opined that to get a home game we would need to beat the Raiders – which happened – and have results go our way – which didn’t. The Storm did not beat the Panthers and blew the Minor Premiership, buggering everything. The Roosters, as predicted, were way too good for the Eels and snatched the Minor Premiership. Souths ended their slump by beating a Tigers side that barely looked interested to finish third. The Sharks at least made me look semi-competent, beating the Dogs to go fourth. The Panthers, as mentioned, pulled off an upset no-one saw coming, and that left them in fifth. The Broncos crushed Manly and rose to sixth, only failing to edge the Panthers – having finished on the same points and differential – because they had more points conceded. The Dragons beat Newcastle yet dropped to seventh. All of which saw us, despite our win over Canberra, at an almost disappointing eighth. Being there is the only thing, and our last finals experience in 2011 took us all the way to the final from the same spot, so why not again? It’s doubtful even if I wish I could say differently, but I cannot see it happening.

What A week FLEW OUT with Air NZ in time to go the Dally M Awards – where the best of the INRL season is celebrated. It should have been renamed the Jonathan Thurston Show, and you can underline how good he really is after that final. I owe a special vote of thanks to Vodafone Warriors CEO Jim Doyle and NRL boss Dave Smith, for organis- ing the treatment I received. It was terrific to catch up with all the Kiwis in the NRL, and men like Cameron Smith and Billy Slater from the Storm. Well Done THe Menzies Hotel Not surprisingly, I had a huge amount of work to do ahead of the 2005 Kiwis Reunion and fair play to the Menzies Hotel. They could not do enough for me. I totally recommend the place, the staff were awesome, nothing was too much trouble- and I am the first to admit I can be a bit demanding – but they totally got how important it was to me, and were right into having the Kiwis as guests. Grand Final Lunch Date I had the superb Carbine Club Grand Final lunch on Thursday, another chance to meet some of the good people I’ve been lucky enough to know through league. I was especially pleased to be there for two men I greatly admire, and who have both been huge servants of the Vodafone Warriors.

You can talk the talk but at some stage you have to walk the walk, and that stage is Saturday. And it will only cost league fans: $5 – with Under 12s free As you know there are all sorts of plans to move the Vodafone Warriors, and they all come down to dollars. You can take fl ower boxes for a few million in Queen St, and you can take millions for offi ces for people who can’t process a building application without dynamite strapped to their backsides, and you can take millions of dollars for any other hare-brained scheme the council comes up with. But few chances to show the council how much us poor league fans love Mt Smart come up. There has been talk of a march down Queen St but they are a dime a dozen, and this Saturday gives us the chance to do something totally different.

One was on Stuff Nation by someone called Jeremy Brown. He talked at length about stuffing up big style, but I will spare Jeremy the embarrassment of repeating it all, suffice to say he was as pissed as a rat –as most of us have been - and made an arse of himself – as most of us have done. Like me, Jeremy put the pills and energy drink decision in the “poor” category. But then he suggested something not many in the media have advocated. It was: Accept there have been consequences, the players have been punished, and move on.
