It is a reference for information about academic requirements; SUNY Downstate Medical Center's policies; student rights and responsibilities; names, location and telephone numbers of important campus services. Please read this Student Handbook carefully, as it contains updated information, rules and regulations that pertain to this academic year. The Handbook is organized into a general information section, which pertains to students in all colleges/schools, and then individual college/school sections. The information contained in the Appendix also pertains to all students. SUNY Downstate Medical Center reserves the right to alter the existing rules and regulations, and academic programs as deemed necessary by the institution. SUNY Downstate Medical Center expressly reserves the right, whenever deemed advisable 1) to change or modify its schedule of tuition and fees; 2) to withdraw, cancel, reschedule or modify any course, program of study, degree, or any requirement or policy in connection with the foregoing; and 3) to change or modify any academic or other policy. Essential changes in information in this Student Handbook concerning new academic regulations, policies or programs will be published in newsletters or other University publications.     A PUBLICATION FOR ALUMNI & FRIENDS OF RUTGERS ROBERT WOOD JOHNSON MEDICAL SCHOOL FALL • 2018 LETTER FROM THE DEAN Dear Friends, erving as the dean of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School has been one of the profound honors of my professional career. So it is with mixed emotions that I share the news that I have accept- Sed a new role as the president of Rush University in Chicago. My tenure here has been a remarkable and wonderful journey. Welcoming new classes, celebrating the Match, and graduating new physicians who will carry the proud Robert Wood Johnson Medical School experience across the country and globe have been exhilarating. There have been many successes, including the launch of the RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers University partnership to jointly operate a world-class academic health system, improving the financial health of our school, and navigating the changing health care environment, with a dedicated sense of purpose and resilience. I was reminded of that strong sense of purpose when I received the final letter from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education certifying our eight-year reaccreditation. That pattern of success is reflected in each of our missions. The clinical enterprise has expanded services, and significantly improved the quality and safety of the patient experience, with the ambulatory accreditation from the Joint Commission. That journey was part of a transformational change across the practice and the entire medical school community. The recognition of quality extended to the community health mission. The Eric B. Chandler Health Center was repeatedly recognized for the quality of care that our faculty and staff provide as a Federally Qualified Health Center.

    CHRONICLE February 2017 Grand Opening Held for Center for Integrative Behavioral Medicine The latest addition to the Richmond University Medical Center network of care, The Center for Integrative Behavioral Medicine, was celebrated with a grand-opening event on January 12th. The center is located on the first two floors of 1130 South Avenue, in the Bloomfield section of the borough, in a state-of-the-art, 24,000 square foot building with ample parking and easily accessible to public transportation. The new comprehensive outpatient behavioral center will provide alcohol, substance abuse and behavioral health services for individuals who struggle with problems of addiction, depression, anxiety and other behaviors. The facility will offer group counseling, individual therapy, medication management, couples' therapy, anger management and more. The medical center’s President & CEO, Dr. Daniel J. Messina, lauded the new center’s groundbreaking services to the Staten Island community, “This is not just the opening of an outpatient center -- this is really a big step forward with integrating behavioral medicine and primary care." In attendance at the event was a number of the medical center’s board of trustees, along with members of the Foundation Board and representatives of city and state health departments along with several community leaders. Additionally, numerous representatives of the borough’s elected officials were in attendance as well as Richmond County District Attorney Michael E. McMahon, Assemblyman Michael J. Cusick, and City Council Member Joseph Borelli. Assemblyman Cusick praised the opening of the center as much-needed for the Staten Island community, "This is something that all of our constituents, all of the residents on Staten Island will benefit from, whether there is someone who uses this for their own health or if they have somebody in their family that needs to come here.” Rosemarie Stazzone, RN, COO & CNO, praised the work of the medical center’s employees across many departments who facilitated the opening of the center, including Dr.
