Linda Goodman's best selling books Sun Signs (1968) and Love Signs (1978) went a long way towards raising public awareness of the subculture as did the American Tribal Love-Rock Musical (1967) with the opening song "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In", and its memorable line "This is the dawning of the ". Add to that, the theology of , Franz Anton Mesmer, Phineas Parkhurst Quimby, , Ralph Wado Emerson, , , and and it no surprise to see how the new age movement has infilitrated all aspects of modern society and culture.

1. EMANUEL SWEDENBORG

One very influential man who laid a foundation that brought the world closer to the New Age era is Emanuel Swedenborg. He was a Swedish scientist and philosopher born in 1688. He was a brilliant man whose early life was devoted to becoming one of the greatest scientific minds of his time, and there is plenty of evidence to suggest that he could have done so. His contributions to science have been significant, including a description which shows an understanding of the neuron far before anyone else understood the concept. Similarly to Leonardo da Vinci, he theorized on a great many concepts that he had no practical way of testing, including a flying machine.

In 1741 Swedenborg’s life took a dramatic turn. Swedenborg, who had been focused on the sciences up until this point in his life, began to turn his thoughts to God and philosophy. In 1744, he began to have dreams and visions that alternated between frightening and exhilarating. He did not know how to interpret these dreams, and for six months or so he struggled internally with what to make of them. He was torn between his ambitions and what he felt was a call to devote his life to God. He recorded these struggles in a journal that he later published under the name Drömboken, or Journal of Dreams.

In late October, 1744, he made a definitive turn away from his scientific career and instead began a journey to come to a greater understanding of God’s Word. His first work devoted to the Lord was an unfinished work named De Cultu et Amore Dei, or The Worship and Love of God. He claimed that the spiritual world had finally become accessible to him, and shortly he became consumed with his religious work. He had a burning desire to interpret the Word of God verse by verse for the benefit of the modern man. Through Swedenborg, the world would finally be able to understand the pattern and message as revealed in his visions and dreams.

In 1747, he resigned from his post at the Swedish Board of Mines to work on this work, the Arcana Caelestia, or Secrets of Heaven. He studied languages and the Bible full time, and listened to the voices that fed him information. Until the time of his death, he wrote extensively on the topic, feeling that he had unraveled the secrets of the Old and New Testament and had the secrets of heaven. For 25 years, Swedenborg claims that he received messages from Jesus regarding the Lord’s judgment (which he claimed occurred in 1747). He also struggled about how to rightly understand the scriptures. He was a prolific writer until he died.

Remember that we are told in 1 Timothy 4:1 that “the Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.” Ironically, Swedenborg (who MAITREYA: THE COMING

A PRODUCTION OF REMA MARKETING AND WWW.GLOBALREPORT2010.COM ©2014, All rights reserved 4

MAITREYA THE COMING – PREPARING HIS COMING was very familiar with his Bible) was aware of the dangers of communicating in this mystical manner with unknown spirits. The famous seer of the eighteenth century, was well acquainted with the spirit world, having experienced detailed visions recorded later in book form. Nevertheless, he cautioned those courting the spirits:

“When spirits begin to speak with a man, he ought to beware that he believes nothing whatever from them; for they say almost anything. Things are fabricated by them, and they lie... they would tell so many lies and indeed with solemn affirmation that a man would be astonished...if a man listens and believes they press on, and deceive, and seduce.”

Despite being ostensibly Christian, Swedenborg did not believe that the Bible was a literal work, but rather a work of allegory that he personally had the keys to unlocking. He was privileged with this inside information due to his dealings with the spirit world. He also felt that faith in Jesus Christ was not required, nor was it sufficient to receive God’s grace. He claimed that an individual’s actions created the worship that would serve as the requirement for following the Lord’s plan.

“Salvation is not dependent on the doctrinal specifics of the religion you have followed on earth. As long as you have lived a life acknowledging God and refraining from evil because it is against Him, you will be saved. Acknowledging God does not necessarily mean recognizing Him by name. A person can be ignorant of religion and still acknowledge God by living a life of goodwill. This is because the choices that we make on a daily basis are what determine whether we end up in heaven or hell. Yes, worshipping God is essential for admittance into heaven, but we worship Him through the actions of our lives.”

Swedenborg’s direct influence has been strong. Some well-known and widely respected people read and were greatly swayed by his teachings, including such notables as William Blake, Helen Keller, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Johnny Appleseed. Additionally Emanuel Swedenborg’s beliefs are followed by several groups today, including the General Church of the New Jerusalem, and the New Church, which is also known as simply the Swedenborgian Church.

Swedenborg’s indirect sway over the spiritual beliefs of the world has been even more substantial. Many Christians today hold beliefs that directly echo the sentiments that Swedenborg expressed centuries ago. As we learn more, we will explore the growth of the New Age movement in part from these very teachings. Swedenborg’s claim that many paths might lead to salvation without acknowledging Jesus as the Savior has especially has been echoed the New Age movement in many different guises. Swedenborg’s work in the spirit realm via meditation was a direct influence on many who believe that mysticism is the path to enlightenment, from Blavatsky to Carl Jung.

Emanuel Swedenborg turned from science to fully devote his time to his communion with the forces he spoke to beyond our natural realm. His was a truly spiritual point of view, but some of the predecessors of the New Age movement did not approach mysticism from a religious or metaphysical lens, but rather focused on either the secular or scientific implications of defining and interacting with the spirit world. While Swedenborg’s questions about the nature of the soul led him to abandon science, others, like Franz Anton Mesmer, felt that the answer to these questions was truly a scientific one.

2. FRANZ ANTON MESMER

Chronologically, Franz Anton Mesmer’s career overlaps with Swedenborg’s. Mesmer was born in 1735 in a small town in Germany. At the age of 25, he began studies at the University of Vienna in the field of medicine. His doctoral dissertation was a theory of medicine that suggested that there were bodily “tides” that were influenced by astronomical bodies. This theory was to be the basis of much of his later work, which changed the face of Europe forever, and served as a precursor to both the New Age movement and some of the direction of studies of psychology.

Early on , Mesmer did experiments that required his patients to swallow iron. He would apply magnets to various parts of the body to achieve results. As Mesmer continued to research, he discovered that magnets were not actually necessary to bring about the same results. From this discovery, he began to work on a theory that he called “” - that all animate (or living) things possess something he called a “universal fluid” that interconnects all life in the universe.

Compare animal magnetism to the concept of chi in , or prana in . The concept is very similar to these Eastern ideas, but was not presented as a religious model. To the European of Mesmer’s day, concepts that would have been dismissed as pagan were easily accepted when they were a modern scientific principle. Today, the outlook is very much the same, and if something is presented as a scientific concept, it is embraced by the world, and those who question the scientific community are laughed at and branded ignorant fools.

Mesmer’s concept of animal magnetism was to be applied to all sorts of cures and situations. Mesmer’s goal was to learn how to control the flow of the vital fluid in various helpful therapies. He claimed that if the physician possessed enough vital fluid and sufficient control over it, that physician could augment or cause healing. This was done through a sort of extra-sensory power or sixth sense. The practitioner could feel his own life force and control it. The basis of many New Age faith healers today comes from this technique.

MAITREYA THE COMING – PREPARING HIS COMING

Mesmer’s influence is undeniable. The word “mesmerize” is taken from his name and is now part of our ordinary vocabulary. We also use the term “animal magnetism” regularly, though usually to mean a sexual attractiveness. Even the English language supports the fact that Mesmer changed the face of the European world permanently. Ironically, neither word is descriptive of techniques that Mesmer himself used, but his belief in the vital force permeating all living beings and the interconnectedness of all influenced many.

One of Mesmer’s followers, a monk named Abbé Faria, learned to bring about trance states through hypnosis. Faria came to the conclusion that the healing properties that Mesmer was able to bring about all lay within the mind of the subject. As a result, Faria departed from the teachings of animal magnetism and began to teach auto-suggestion to his patients. He relied on forms of meditation and hypnosis that were widely practiced by yogis and fakirs of the East for healing. To make the patient more receptive to the suggestion, he guided that person into a state of somnambulism that Mesmer had regarded as a simply a result of magnetism, not something to be pursued of itself. This opened a world of the inner mind and subconscious. Humans are very susceptible to new ideas in this state. This vulnerability comes with its own dangers, though, as has been seen already.

By the time Blavatsky and the Theosophists arrived, a fascination with mysticism had pervaded Europe, England in particular. Séances were regular occurrences as entertainment, as healing, or for the spiritual goal of contact with beings outside of our physical realm. Captivated audiences would watch as Mesmerizers kept subjects in a trance state. These subjects would in turn describe fascinating details of scenes from their dreams and subconscious, or would show astonishing abilities to withstand pain. This preoccupation with the occult and powers that were (or somehow beyond the norm of everyday existence) held a great lure for the public at this time.

Mesmer’s work also has descendants in the so-called “soft” science of psychology. Additionally, , self-help, and other types of health related fields are rife with New Age concepts that can be traced to Mesmer, despite the fact that he considered his outlook to be scientific and secular. Psychologists, particularly with regards to certain types of analysis and psychoanalysis, has been known to make heavy use of altered mental states and hypnosis to achieve results.

Mesmer’s explanation for the functioning of living things is a vitalistic approach. The concept of a life force, spirit, soul, or other differentiation that separates the animate from the inanimate is one that we can all agree with, but vitalists go a step farther and use their mystical beliefs and energies to change reality, without understanding the mechanisms or interactions involved. Think today how many chiropractors, practitioners of Chinese medicine, “doctors” of naturopathy, and other groups rely heavily on mystical explanations for mechanical processes. There are even many who profit from the sale of magnets and crystals to augment and concentrate this vital essence. seeks to open the flow of prana throughout the body, while some of the martial arts, like Tai Chi seek to balance the chi within the body. These are New Age concepts.

3. THE MASONIC INFLUENCE

As we discuss and lay the framework for the origins of the New Age ideology and the New Age movement, it is important to know the role of . The origin of this society in its current form is subject to much debate. Many opposing views and theories come to light whenever a researcher tries to hone in on the truth. It is very easy to get caught up in wild speculation. The Freemasons themselves are guilty of associating themselves with almost anyone and everyone who was called a “builder” or “architect,” even if that title was metaphoric. As a result, the claims are difficult to sort through. Let’s look at what the evidence and documentation reveal to be most logical and plausible.

In certain areas of Europe, professional guilds thrived in Medieval times. These guilds were a professional development track for merchants and craftsmen. These guilds were responsible for the official progress from apprentice to journeyman to master, and provided security and prestige to those who were members of the guild. The guild could help provide for members in times of need, and band together to provide the tradesmen from abuses from the feudal lords. Working together, these guilds accomplished what individuals could not do alone. In many ways, the guild system is the ancestor of today’s union system. Those who would employ a tradesman would also benefit from working with a guild member, as they could be assured a standard of craftsmanship.

As a result of booming guild membership in the Middle Ages, we have administrative records of different types of craftsmen throughout Europe. Stone masons are registered under various names. There are different grades and specialists among the masons, and often these terms or words that convey what type of stone or building the worker was most skilled in. A mason who dealt with what is called “free stone” was one who dealt with stone that was usually sandstone or limestone. This stone was “free” because you could easily cut it in any direction with a saw, instead of having to work at difficult angles. As a result, this type of stone was not employed in structural elements, but instead often used in decorative elements, such as gargoyles and cornices.

There are instances recorded of these masons of free stone in guild rosters that were recorded in both French and Latin. There are references in a romance named Floris and Blancheflour. This Medieval romance tells of a hero pretending to be a “free mason” to gain entry to the castle where his beloved was trapped. The English language was rapidly changing in this time period, with heavy French and German influences, and the original text of this romance was French. The copy in Middle English that contains the pertinent text: “‘Take on þy honde squyer and scantlon, As þow were a free mason” does not exactly match other scripts of the time, so it is difficult to date this piece of evidence exactly. It is certain that it was at the very latest in the end of the 14th Century.

The earliest undisputed documentation of the word “freemason” in English is in the Calendar of the Coroners’ Rolls of the City of London A.D. 1300-1378, edited by Reginald Sharpe and published in 1913. In this document, an accessory to a jailbreak was named to be Nicholas le Freemason. It is only a brief mention, and there is no further information on what happened to this man. Another example in the end of the 14th Century was in an election of the mayor of London, and a group of “freemasons” nominated their candidate for office. The word “Freemason” is actually marked through and changed by a scribe to read “mason” for unknown reasons. While there is disagreement about the reason for the official change, it is clear that by the year 1376, the word was in common use and the Freemasons represented a united voice.

However, whether that voice was simply the voice of a guild of men with a common trade, or a group of men devoted to a secret society as in modern Freemasonry is a subject of disagreement even amongst Freemasons. Modern speculative Freemasonry consists of men who meet and call themselves an “esoteric

MAITREYA THE COMING – PREPARING HIS COMING community” - meaning that they are a society that has secrets. While there are some branches and coexisting groups that include females, it is almost entirely a male society. The reason it is referred to as speculative is that there is no requirement that the members be masons or builders in any sense of the word anymore. When that requirement was dropped is an interesting puzzle for historians and those interested in Freemasonry.

By the late 16th century, we can see operative masonry widespread throughout Europe, and there is even some indication that it stretched as far as the Holy Lands. Operative masonry is a guild involving those who had worked with stone. These men were part of various stone-guilds that had built cathedrals and buildings in the Middle Ages. There are stories of these men coming from great distances, hearing by word of mouth that some nobleman or church group had a major architectural accomplishment and need of workers. The Masons themselves liken these groups to the builders of the Temple of Solomon, built to honor God and recorded in the Old Testament.

Around the 17th century, there is evidence that these operative Masonic groups began to accept people into their midst who were not simply stoneworkers. Soon Masonry, as an association, was not simply limited to those who took an active role in building these massive monuments. These groups were a secretive, and rich, group of men who held considerable power in the times. What we can trace is a development of this workman’s guilt into the modern speculative Freemasonry of today. That Freemasonry is riddled with mysteries, including secret handshakes, codes, symbolism, mythology, and official allegory.

One opinion on the transition from operative to speculative masonry is represented by Harry Carr, who served as Secretary of Quator Coronati Lodge No. 2076 and is known as the “Premier Lodge of Masonic Research”. Carr states that Freemasonry “… developed in Britain out of the building trades and fraternities, whose history goes back some 600 years in England.” He goes on to say “I do insist, however, that our present-day speculative Freemasonry is directly descended from the operative masonry whose beginnings we can trace back to the earliest record of organization among masons in 1356.” At this point it would appear that Carr believes that the transition from operative to speculative business was not as gradual as MAITREYA THE COMING

A PRODUCTION OF REMA MARKETING AND WWW.GLOBALREPORT2010.COM ©2014, All rights reserved 9

MAITREYA THE COMING – PREPARING HIS COMING we might believe. The transition from operative to speculative masonry was not the take-over of an old business under new management. It was the original business, which gradually changed its character according to the needs of its time, but with perfect continuity throughout.

Another view is that Freemasonry was a cover for a conspiracy of royalists within English society to openly meet under cover of being in a fraternal organization that appeared to be occupational in nature. The secret rituals, mysteries, and such were a way for the conspirators to know that they were safe and speaking to someone who was politically aligned with their own beliefs. It is interesting that one of the theories of this shift into a mystery organization by Freemasons themselves focuses on covert political operations. This sheds light on some of the aims and methods used even today in modern Freemasonry. There are many other opinions on the origins of the “Masonic craft” that are held by the Freemasons themselves, including Rosicrucian origins, a beginning that was an offshoot of the age of Enlightenment, and even monks who had a secret society that infiltrated operative Freemasonry and changed the very nature of the society.

The year 1717 London marks the “official” birth date of modern Freemasonry, with the founding of the Grand Lodge in London. No matter the opinion that is held about its origins, it is worth nothing that modern masonry is at least 300 years old. There is a common misconception of what Freemasonry is, with many people believing that it is merely a friendly fraternity where people meet up to network and socialize. This is partially true, of course, and many Masons are completely innocent members of this society, never realizing what deeper secrets their group hides.

The Freemasons were infiltrated in the late 18th century by an organization called The Order of the Illuminati. Just as with the Freemasons, we come to a lot of fictional and embellished information about these Illuminati. After sifting through myth and mystery, a few important key facts come to light. Most historians will grant that the Illuminati certainly existed in Bavaria, Germany. This group was founded in 1776 by a lawyer named Adam Weishaupt. Weishaupt’s organization was a type of revolutionary network that sought political and societal reform, largely by way of espionage and other covert activities. In 1777, Weishaupt was initiated into a Masonic order, and began to work to reconcile the ideas of his Illuminati with those of the Masons. He believed in creating a perfected, “illuminated” mankind that transcended what he saw as superstition. By way of reason, ritual, and communing with nature, he hoped to achieve this brotherhood of the enlightened. He was clear on why he employed his membership with the Freemasons to further his cause:

“The great strength of our Order lies in its concealment; let it never appear in any place in its own name, but always covered by another name, and another occupation. None is better than the three lower degrees of Free Masonry; the public is accustomed to it, expects little from it, and therefore takes little notice of it. Next to this, the form of a learned or literary society is best suited to our purpose, and had Free Masonry not existed, this cover would have been employed; and it may be much more than a cover, it may be a powerful engine in our hands. By establishing reading societies, and subscription libraries, and taking these under our direction, and supplying them through our labours, we may turn the public mind which way we will.”

The Illuminati grew in popularity and influence, and the radical views drew the attention of those in power. Intercepted documents were presented to the Elector of Bavaria, Karl Theodor. Theodor interpreted these documents as seditious, and he in 1784 he issued the first of three edicts against the Illuminati. By 1787, the Illuminati were completely on the run from Bavaria, and Weishaupt had fled the country after losing his position in the University of Ingolstadt.

As the Bavarian government sought to uproot Illuminati teachings, writings were discovered after raids of castles and arrests of members that shed light on what was truly being taught by the Illuminati. These writings were then translated from

MAITREYA THE COMING

MAITREYA THE COMING – PREPARING HIS COMING by two men who were contemporary with the Illuminati, Ade Barruel and John Robison. The writings were published in their works, Proofs of a Conspiracy against all the Religions and Governments of Europe , and Memoirs Illustrating the History of Jacobinism . The writings revealed that the Illuminati wanted a one-world system that was ruled from the ranks of the Illuminati. The overthrow of religion and the infiltration of Freemasonry to achieve this became clear to all who read the books. The Illuminati needed the Freemasons, in order to operate under another name and occupation. Adam Weishaupt himself stated,

“Do you realize sufficiently what it means to rule - to rule in a secret society? Not only over the lesser or more important of the populace, but over the best of men, over men of all ranks, nations, and religions… to rule without external force, to unite them indissolubly, to breathe one spirit and soul into them, men distributed over all parts of the world?”

Weishaupt’s efforts combined Illuminism with the Freemason’s rituals, use of degrees, esoteric teachings, and secrecy. The Illuminati almost immediately had more than 2000 names in the rosters, including some of the elite of Germany. The spread into other countries was actually begun before the Bavarian campaigns against Illuminati. This spread was hastened by the Bavarian oppression, not stamped out. The Illuminati could be found throughout all of Europe. Elevating the human race, that familiar lie of God’s enemies since the Garden of Eden, was the goal of Illuminism. That goal itself is suspect, as there is already a path laid before us to become more Christlike and better people, and that path is not through the wisdom of man. Corruption quickly degraded any noble purposes that the Illuminati might have laid claim to, and the obvious enemy of the Freemasons and the Illuminati became Christianity itself.

President George Washington himself was convinced that the Illuminati existed after 1785 when it was outlawed in Bavaria. It is clear, reading correspondence from 1798 between Washington and a reverend named G. W. Snyder. Our first president was uneasy and voiced his concerns about the Illuminati a good 13 years after the Illuminati was outlawed in Bavaria. He wrote,

“I have heard much of the nefarious, and dangerous plans, and doctrines of the illuminati. It was not my intention to doubt that, the doctrines of the illuminati, and principles of Jacobinism had not spread in the United States. On the contrary, no one is more truly satisfied of this fact than I am. The idea that I meant to convey, was, that I did not believe that the Lodges of Free Masons in this Country had, as Societies, endeavoured to propagate the diabolical tenets of the first, or pernicious principles of the latter( if they are susceptible of separation). That individuals of them may have done it, or that the founder, or instrument employed to found, the Democratic Societies in the United States, may have had these objects; and actually had a separation of the People from their Government in view, is too evident to be questioned.”

From President Washington’s words, we can see that the Illuminati were nefarious and dangerous. He had little doubt about the Illuminati spreading to America by 1798. He was truly satisfied, or in other words, convinced of this fact. However, he thought it was too early for whole Masonic lodges to be striving for Illuminati objectives, but that individuals within American lodges were already doing so.

According to Washington, these things are too evident to be questioned. It is clear that the spread of Freemasonry to the United States was not a harmless brotherhood of men who simply were banded together in a secret society. The very men that we hold so much respect for were concerned about the pernicious influence that these groups were having on the world.

George Washington was not the only one who noticed the influence and infiltration of Freemasonry with Illuminati elitist doctrines. That same year the president of Yale University, Timothy Dwight IV, spoke out against the Illuminati, “ The great and good ends proposed by the Illuminati, as the ultimate objects of their union, are the overthrow of religion, governments, and human society, civil and domestic.” A few years later, John Quincy Adams, the sixth president of the United States of America, remarked, “I do MAITREYA THE COMING

A PRODUCTION OF REMA MARKETING AND WWW.GLOBALREPORT2010.COM ©2014, All rights reserved 11

MAITREYA THE COMING – PREPARING HIS COMING conscientiously and sincerely believe that the order of Freemasonry, if not the greatest, is one of the greatest moral and political evils.”

Another example from the early United States is Joseph Willard, the president of Harvard University. Willard declared in speech in New Hampshire,

“There is sufficient evidence that a number of societies, of the Illuminati, have been established in this land of Gospel light and civil liberty, which were organized from the grand society, in France. They are doubtless secretly striving to undermine all our ancient institutions, civil and sacred. These societies are closely leagued with those of the same Order, in Europe; they have all the same objects in view. The enemies of all order are seeking our ruin. Should infidelity generally prevail, our independence would fall of course. Our republican government would be annihilated.”

The Illuminati doctrine of globalization and societal reform was fused into Freemasonry. Soon prominent Freemasons started voicing their anticipation of a new world order, a one world system. John Robison, after translating the documents that had been seized by the Bavarian government, had already warned the world that “the express aim of this Order was to abolish Christianity, and overturn all civil government.” Freemasonry was simply a means to an end, a way to get followers into the occult and under the plan of the New World Order. People in high places of power were able to further the agenda in an efficient way by using the framework of Freemasonry to propel these ideas.

Things progressed at a fairly slow pace for the Freemasons until roughly a hundred years ago, when was becoming more and more powerful. At this point, people began noticing the connection between Freemasonry and Theosophy. In the 1917 work, Exposed, W. Host remarks that, “Freemasonry, viewed doctrinally, is Theosophy.”

One of the prominent second generation Theosophists, Alice Bailey, revealed in her writings that Freemasonry’s goals are meant to produce advanced occultists. This is absolutely in accord with Theosophy’s aims.

“The Masonic Movement, when it can be divorced from politics and social end and from its present paralyzing condition of inertia, will meet the need of those who can, and should, wield power. It is the custodian of the law; it is the home of the Mysteries and the seat of initiation. It holds in its symbolism the ritual of Deity, and the way of salvation is pictorially preserved in its work. The methods of Deity are demonstrated in its Temples, and under the All- seeing Eye the work can go forward. It is a far more occult organization than can be realised, and is intended to be the training school for the coming advanced occultists.”

Through this quote, we can see that Alice Bailey held her reservations about the Masons and their ability to move decisively, but felt they had the power and means to serve the goals that she herself pursued so doggedly. The ritual of Diety would eventually mean a way for mere humans to become more than simply men, but eventually to become gods themselves. She knew all about training occultists; Bailey and her influential Lucis Trust had set about to change the world and bring about a new religion that would liberate man and bring the world to heel under the plans of the so-called Ascended Masters. The works of the Lucis Trust, under the guise of benevolent societies and arcane schools, have gained recognition throughout the world.

4. HELENA BLAVATSKY

The New Age Movement has its roots in ancient history, although the revival of New Age as we know it today, is anchored in 1860-1890, in the work of a Russian born Madame Helena Blavatsky (1831- 1891). The crucial role of Helena Blavatsky can best be illustrated with the following quote:

"... Madame Blavatsky ... stands out as the fountainhead of modern occult thought, and was either the originator and/or popularizer of many of the ideas and terms which have a century later been assembled within the New Age Movement. The , which she cofounded, has been the major advocate of occult philosophy in the West and the single most important avenue of Eastern teaching to the West." (J. Gordon Melton, Jerome Clark and Aidan A. Kelly, editors, New Age Almanac, Detroit, Michigan, Gale Research Inc., 1991, p. 16, quoted in the Blavatsky archives on-line)

Helena Petrovna Hahn Blavatsky, born to a distinguished family in the Ukraine, 1831, was married to Gen. N.P. Blavatsky, but soon deserted him and left Russia. According to the memoirs of her cousin Count Whitte, she spent some time in Cairo and Tibet before arriving in New York in 1873. Through a common interest in , she became associated with Henry Steel Olcott, an American lawyer and newspaperman and student of spiritualism, in the formation of occult groups, culminating in the sixteen- member Theosophical Society.

In 1877 she published Isis Unveiled , a collection of material from Eastern thought, serpent worship, witchcraft, alchemy, and 19th century science, which she ascribes to her Tibetan masters but which was often taken verbatim from fifty standard works on occult subjects in Henry Olcott's library.

In 1888, Blavatsky formed an esoteric section of the Theosophical Society in London for the advanced study of the occult. Eventually this movement spread among the English and Irish literary circles. In Dublin, the Irish Theosophical Society was formed under the leadership of Charles Johnston.

Bejamin Creme writes:

"The externalization of the Hierarchy actually started as far back as 1860. Certain disciples came in, such as H.P. Blavatsky and others, who have been releasing to the world the New Age teachings. I don’t mean just the occult teaching. I mean new ideas of philosophy, of politics, of economics, etc." (Frequently Asked Questions, version 9 April 2000, website Indo-Paksitani Maitreya Share International)

"As humanity matures, further aspects of this previously hidden knowledge are released in a wider, more open manner. Throughout the last 100 years, the Ageless Wisdom Teachings have been communicated through individuals such as Helena Blavatsky, founder of the Theosophical Society" (The Ageless Wisdom Teachings - in brief, Humanity's spiritual legacy, ind-Pakistani Maitreya, Share International

Blavatsky asserted to receive revelations and commands directly from a Spiritual Master, with whom she had telepathic contact and offered herself as a medium to higher (demonic) powers that worked through her. She was used to present to the world a new presentation of the age-old Theosophia.

In The Secret Doctrine Blavatsky writes:

MAITREYA THE COMING – PREPARING HIS COMING

"The accumulated Wisdom of the ages, tested and verified by generations of Seers...," "that body of Truth of which religions are but as branches of the parent tree".

"The teachings in these volumes belong neither to the Hindy, the Zoroastrian, the Chaldean, nor to Buddhism, Islam, Judaism, nor Christianity exclusively. The Secret Doctrine is the essence of all these. Sprung from it in their origins, the various religious schemes are now made to merge back into their original element, out of which every mystery and dogma has grown, developed, and become materialized."

Blavatsky traveled extensively. In the 1850s and 1870s she visited India repeatedly (also visited Kashmir) while undergoing her occult training and she established various contacts there.

Blavatsky believed that the Ascended Masters are individuals who were formerly embodied on the earth and learned the lessons of life during their incarnations. They gained mastery over the limitations of the matter planes, (In esoteric cosmology, a plane, other than the physical world is conceived as a subtle state of consciousness that transcends the known physical universe).

An , in such an understanding, has become God-like and a source of unconditional “Divine Love” to all life, and through the Ascension has united with his or her own “God Self,” the “I AM Presence.” This is reflected in the New Age writings:

"The Masters of Wisdom, together forming the Spiritual Hierarchy, are the custodians of the Divine Plan for this planet. They have inspired all the great human achievements, working from behind the scenes through their disciples in every field of endeavor" (The Ageless Wisdom Teachings -- in brief, Humanity's spiritual legacy, Share International)

The time wasn't considered ready yet to go public with this doctrine, and her Master instructed her that the doctrine must remain secret for 100 years, time during which only a close circle was to be informed and was to prepare everything:

"In 1922, therefore, he inaugurated the New Group of World Servers, which is the most important group existing in the world, although it has no outer form or organization. Each member of it is related subjectively (i.e. on the inner, soul level) to Hierarchy; they know and understand the Plan and their part in it. On the outer plane there are two groups: one large group, unaware of their subjective link with Hierarchy and working only under impression from the Masters; the other, a small inner nucleus which works consciously on the outer plane under the direct supervision of the Masters. Made up of men and women of all levels of society, the New Group of World Servers has members in every country in the world, without exception. They are to be found in the educational, political, economic and scientific fields. .... The New Group of World Servers forms a bridging group between humanity and Hierarchy. It is several million strong today." (Frequently Asked Questions, website Indo- Pakistani Maitreya, Share International)

While visiting the United States, Madame Blavatsky, Mother of the New Age Movement, became very interested in otherwise known as "out of body experiences". Helena claimed that during one of those out of body experiences she managed to make contact with disembodied Spiritual Masters, whom she called "Mahatmas". As mentioned previously these so-called Great Masters were supposedly made perfect through many incarnations, many lifetimes, and they lived in Tibet. After having spiritually evolved into perfection they were then able to guide mankind unto the right path. But of course, in reality, Blavatsky was being guided by demonic entities that merely were posing as Spiritual Masters! MAITREYA THE COMING

MAITREYA THE COMING – PREPARING HIS COMING

Of course, the fact that she claimed to be guided by the Great Masters made the things that Helena had to say seem even more believable to the people who turned to her Theosophical philosophies for guidance. And to top that off, she even performed conjuring magician's tricks, which made her messages still more believable, mysterious, and appealing to the multitudes.

Blavatsky promoted psychic phenomena, including supernatural trance medium exercises, dematerializations and spirit manifestation. Some however, accused her of being a fraud and of using hypnosis on the audiences. There were even reports to the effect that wherever she went the air was full of "Spirit rapping" and "astral bells". The Great Masters were said to be responsible for making these things happen. She even claimed to have been initiated by two of these Masters in Tibet named Koothoomi and Morya.

As mentioned, Helena Blavatsky's book, Isis Unveiled , regarded as the "Bible" for New Ager Spiritualists, was written supposedly under the guidance of a disembodied set of these "Higher Spiritual Beings" that she called "Great Spirits" or "Mahatmas". She was so taken by these Great Masters that eventually she went so far as to even set up an altar for them in her home!

According to the reports of Colonel Olcott, Madame Blavatsky wrote this book of hers while in an altered state of consciousness:

"Her pen would be flying over the page, when she would suddenly stop, look into space with the vacant eye of the clairvoyant seer, shorten her vision as though to look at something held invisibly in the air before her, and begin copying on her paper what she saw. The quotation finished, her eyes would resume their natural expression." - Henry Steele Olcott, "Old Diary Leaves", 1895, Vol. I, pg. 208

These so called Spirit Masters who dictated to Helena what to write were supposedly concerned about guiding mankind on to the right path; and they played a large part in advising her to start the Theosophical Society. They also advised her and Colonel Olcott to begin viewing things in a more "Global" sense and to begin a New World Order.

Madame Helena Blavatsky discovered the drug hashish when she was in Cairo, which of course influenced her writings. She in fact became addicted to this drug. She used the drug to help her contact the spirit world, which was a common practice in ancient pagan times.

In Ancient Greece, for instance, we see the practice of Spiritualism and the use of drugs in the Greek Oracles at Delphi. Many of the gods that were worshipped by the Greeks were thought to be the dead who had evolved into godhood, and who thus were able to give them advice and counsel in their own quest toward godhood. In other words, the Greeks endeavoured to communicate with the "Star Gods" or the Great Masters who supposedly were the highly evolved and deified spirits of the dead!

MAITREYA THE COMING – PREPARING HIS COMING

Before the Priestess would convey the messages from the Spirit World, she first had to chew upon hallucinogenic leaves or be surrounded by trance - inducing vapors to put her into an altered state of consciousness. Thus we see time and time again that in the Mystery Religions of Ancient Egypt, Greece and Babylon, the objective was always the same, to put oneself into a hypnotic trance, become possessed by the spirits, then to commune with the gods, which in reality were demons!

Manly P. Hall, the occult writer, tells how Blavatsky knew just what to use the drugs for:

"Egyptian priests discovered herb extracts by means of which temporary could be induced, and they made use of these during the initiatory rituals of their mysteries. Shortly after the drugs were administered to him, the neophyte was attacked by a spell of dizziness. He found himself floating through space, and while his physical body was absolutely insensible (being guarded by priests that no ill should befall it) the candidate passed through a number of weird experiences, which he was able to relate after regaining consciousness…..In light of present day knowledge, it is difficult to appreciate an art so highly developed that by means of draughts, perfumes, and incenses, the mental attitude desired could be induced almost instantaneously, yet such an art actually existed among the priestcraft of the early pagan world…”

Herbal compounds were used to cause temporary clairvoyance in connection with the oracles, especially the one at Delphi. Words spoken while in these imposed trances were regarded as prophetic . Modern mediums, while under control as the result of partly self-imposed catalepsy, give messages somewhat similar to those of the ancient prophets, but in the majority of cases their results are far less accurate, for the soothsayers of today lack the knowledge of nature's hidden forces.

"The Mysteries taught that during the higher degrees of initiation the gods themselves took part in the instruction of candidates or at least were present, which was in itself a benediction. As the deities dwelt in the invisible worlds and came only in their spiritual bodies, it was impossible for the neophyte to cognize them without the assistance of drugs which stimulated the clairvoyant center of his consciousness. Many initiates in the ancient Mysteries stated emphatically that they had conversed with the immortals and had beheld the gods." Secret Teachings of all Ages, Manly P. Hall, pg. CXII

Blavatsky also wrote:

“plants also have like mystical properties in a most wonderful degree, and the secrets of the herbs of dreams and enchantments are only lost to European science, and useless to say, too, are unknown to it, except in a few marked instances, such as opium and hashish. Yet, the physical effects of even these few that open the human system are regarded as evidences of a temporary mental disorder. The women of Thessaly and Epirus, the female heirophants of the rites of Sabazius, did not carry their secrets away with the downfall of their sanctuaries. They are still preserved, and those who are aware of the nature of soma (a plant whose juices induce a hypnotic trance- like state) know the properties of other plants as well.' (from Blavatsky's book: Isis Unveiled).

In Spiritualism, different methods are used to induce a trance-like state, otherwise known as altered states of consciousness for the purpose of making the Spirit Medium vulnerable to the spirit world, that they might receive messages from the "other side". Followers of the New Age Religion apply several methods, such as hypnosis, drumming, biofeedback, Eastern Meditation, and visualization, to put them into this same trance state, for the purpose of contacting the spirit world!

In summary, Blavatsky’s main contribution to mystical thought was the manner in which she sought to synthesise Eastern and Western philosophy and religion, thereby providing a framework for understanding universal occult teaching. Her teachings also had a political influence.

MAITREYA THE COMING – PREPARING HIS COMING

5. ALICE BAILEY

Alice Bailey was born on June 16th, 1880 in the city of Manchester, England. She was raised in an orthodox Christian family which she would say later, made her very unhappy and a bad tempered little girl. "Life was not worth living ," she said, and the feeling of worthlessness, and a certain amount of curiosity about life and death led her to attempt suicide three times before she was even fifteen.

At the age of fifteen her first mystical encounter occurred while her family had gone to church. While she was in a room reading, a man wearing a turban on his head suddenly entered her room. Startled, and not being able to say a word, an obvious out of place character in 19th century Manchester, this stranger spoke to her:

“He told me there was some work that it was planned that I could do in the world but that it would entail changing my disposition considerably; I would have to give up being such an unpleasant little girl and must try to get some measure of self-control. My future usefulness to Him and to the world was dependent on how I hand led myself and the changes I could manage to make. He said that if I could achieve real self-control I could then be trusted and that I would travel all over the world and visit many countries, "doing your Master's work all the time" ... He added that He w ould be in touch with me at intervals of seven years apart.”

This was to be Alice Bailey's first contact with her Master Koot Humi (Kuthumi Master of the second Ray. one of the mysterious mahatmas claimed to have inspired and communicated with Helena Petrovna Blavatsky.

In 1917, after the breakup of her first marriage she moved to the United States, where she was introduced to the teachings of Theosophy. It was during this period that she had met, and married, her husband Foster Bailey (a 33 rd degree Scottish Rite Freemason). She turned out to be a good pupil, Bailey soon rose through the ranks and became the editor of the American Theosophists' newspaper.

The encounter with her fated second "Master", and soon to be writing partner for an international esoteric movement, occurred in 1919, while having a quiet time on a hill close to her house. She heard a note of music sounding everywhere which was followed by a voice (Djwhal Khul*, also called "The Tibetan.") that asked her if she was willing to write some books. Having refused, saying that she wouldn't engage in any psychic practices, the voice gave her three weeks to reconsider. Alice completely forgot about the subject when the voice made its appearance as scheduled. Agreeing to give it a try for a few weeks the first chapters of Initiation, Human and Solar were written. After about a month, Alice got scared; refusing to do anymore work, and the Master Djwhal Khul told her to discuss it with her Master Koot Humi. Koot Humi

MAITREYA THE COMING – PREPARING HIS COMING confessed that it was, in fact, him that told DK to contact her and he gave Alice permission to proceed, after giving Mrs. Bailey the proper technique for enhanced telepathic communication.

Between 1919 and 1949 (her death), she produced twenty-four books, including an autobiography, nineteen of these books were supposedly written by her Tibetan Master DK (Djwhal Khul). During the intervening years, Alice Bailey spent most of it working out what she referred to as "The Plan." The results of which, influenced the birth of many New Age groups: The Church Universal and Triumphant, 's The Tara Center, the Robert Muller Schools and The Temple of Understanding, to name a few. Her 24 books, combined with the Beacon magazine, Triangles, and the Arcane School indoctrinate students into what Bailey describes as the "Ageless Wisdom" teachings. The Arcane School, founded in 1922, boasted 20,000 graduates by 1954. This occult university is more active than ever and continues to be the main training ground for New Age disciples.

The bulk of these occult teachings, in Bailey's books, are from her channeled Tibetan master Djwhal Khul (DK); the "Plan" according to the Hierarchy of Ascended Masters. Through a series of group- initiations and group-meditative techniques the Hierarchy directs the "New Group of World Servers" to implement a "New World Religion" of which humanity as a whole can aid the "will of the planetary logos". "Emphasis should be laid on the evolution of humanity," so says Master DK through Bailey, "with particular attention to its goal, perfection . (The Externalization of the Hierarchy, p. 588)" The objective is "the helping of the Great Ones and the rendering to them of that intelligent assistance which will make their plans for humanity materialize."

Alice Bailey and her husband eventually left the Theosophical society and founded the Lucis Trust in 1920, the Arcane School to disseminate spiritual teachings in 1923, while the world-wide "Triangles" program came into being in 1937 as a “spiritual service”.

Did Djwhal Khul or "The Tibetan" have anything to do with these organizations? The answer is resoundingly in the affirmative. In an article called The Tibetan Master's Work , the Lucis trust tells us that after the first books were published, Djwhal Khul “needed to find the nucleus of people through whom he could work ” and although he was not instrumental in running or supervising the school, he

“did use it for service purposes when it had demonstrated its value in providing a body of workers trained to implement the Plan and prepare for the reappearance of the Christ.”

Then, as the books got more popular and began to be read around the world,

“… using the Arcane School, he anchored the service activities of Triangles and World Goodwill. Both of these are hierarchical activities with the objective of energising and relating the members of the new group of world servers, and "to establish the nucleus of a great synthesis."

Lucis Trust is a non-profit trust incorporated in New York State to manage the business of publishing Mrs. Bailey's books and the magazine Beacon. At one time, the Lucis Trust office in New York was located at 866 United Nations Plaza, but is currently located on Wall Street. It is a powerful institution that enjoys "Consultative Status" with the United Nations, which means not only a close working relationship with the U.N., including a seat on the weekly sessions, but influence with powerful business and national leaders throughout the world.

However Lucis Trust was originally called the Lucifer Publishing Company as the title page of the 1922 edition of Alice Bailey's book, 'Initiation, Human and Solar' shows. Apparently they, like Blavatsky before them, sought to elicit a deeper understanding of the sacrifice made by Lucifer.

MAITREYA THE COMING – PREPARING HIS COMING

“Alice and Foster Bailey were serious students and teachers of Theosophy, a spiritual tradition which views Lucifer as one of the solar Angels, those advanced Beings Who Theosophy says descended (thus “the fall”) from Venus to our planet eons ago to bring the principle of mind to what was then animal-man. In the theosophical perspective, the descent of these solar Angels was not a fall into sin or disgrace but rather an act of great sacrifice, as is suggested in the name “Lucifer” which means light-bearer”.

And as Helen Blavatsky once said,

"To make the point clear once for all: that which the clergy of every dogmatic religion -- pre-eminently the Christian -- points out as Satan, the enemy of God, is in reality, the highest divine Spirit -- (occult Wisdom on Earth)”

Lucis Trust also provides worldwide financial support for the Arcane School, Triangles, World Goodwill, Lucis Publishing, Lucis Productions, Lucis Trust Libraries, the New Group of World Servers and maintains the UN meditation room.

The Arcane School

Founded in 1923 the school provides training for new age discipleship through correspondence courses in meditation and the occult from its branches in New York, Geneva, London and Buenos Aires. According to Lucis trust…

“The purpose of the esoteric training given in the Arcane School is to help the student grow spiritually toward acceptance of discipleship responsibility and to serve the Plan by serving humanity.”

John Michael Greer's New Encyclopedia of the Occult states that the school " seeks to develop a New Group of World Servers to accomplish the work of the Hierarchy of Masters, under the guidance of its head, the Christ."

Triangles

In 1937 Lucis Trust also founded a world-wide "Triangles" program. A triangle “symbolic of the essential Trinity of the Godhead” is a global network of cells, whose members pray a "Great Invocation," It brings people together in groups of three for daily meditation, whereby “a network of light and goodwill covering the entire planet is created and maintained”. Their belief is that they receive divine through meditation; this energy is transmitted to humanity, so raising spiritual awareness. In the words of the Lucis Trust,

“A triangle is a group of three people who link each day in thought for a few minutes of creative meditation. They need not necessarily live in the same locality, and many international triangles exist. Each day members sit quietly for a few minutes and link mentally with other members of their triangle, or triangles. They invoke the energies of light and goodwill, visualising these energies as circulating through the three focal points of each triangle, and pouring out through the network of triangles surrounding the planet. At the same time they repeat the Great Invocation, thus helping to form a channel for the downpouring of light and love into the consciousness of humanity.”

World Goodwill

Founded in 1932, The World Goodwill group is particularly important among Lucis Trust's activities as the organization is recognized by the United Nations today as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), and is represented at regular briefing sessions at the United Nations in New York and Geneva. The Lucis Trust is on the Roster of the UN Economic and Social Council. According to the World Goodwill site, it is

“ an accredited non-governmental organisation with the Department of Public Information of the United Nations” and maintains “informal relations with certain of the Specialised Agencies and with a wide range of national and international non-governmental organisations is an activity of the Lucis Trust….The stated objectives of World Goodwill according to its sponsoring organization, the Lucis Trust, are: To help mobilise the energy of goodwill; To cooperate in the work of preparation for the reappearance of the Christ; To educate public opinion on the causes of the major world problems and to help create the thoughtform of solution."

They list “six recognitions that can provide a basis for realising these purposes and objectives”, the first four of which are.

One: Humanity is not following a haphazard or uncharted course -- there is a Plan. This Plan has always existed and is part of the greater design of the Cosmos. The Plan has worked out through the evolutionary developments of the past and because of the special impetus given it from time to time by the great leaders, teachers and intuitives of the human race.

Two: There is an inner spiritual government of the planet, known under such different names as the spiritual Hierarchy, the society of Illumined Minds, or Christ and his Church, according to various religious traditions. Humanity is never left without spiritual guidance or direction under the Plan.

Three: The widespread expectation that we approach the "Age of Maitreya", as it is known in the East, when the World Teacher and present head of the spiritual Hierarchy, the Christ, will reappear among humanity to sound the keynote of the new age.

Four: There are millions of mentally alert men and women in all parts of the world who are en rapport with the Plan and work to give it expression. They are people in whom the consciousness of humanity as one interdependent unit is alive and active. They regard the many differing national, religious and social systems in which they serve as modes of expanding human consciousness and ways by which humanity learns needed lessons. Their primary function is, through their living example, to give humanity a new and better vision of what life should be”.

They then go on to talk of The Reappearance of the Christ, saying that

“This is a time of preparation not only for a new civilisation and culture in a new world order, but also for the coming of a new spiritual dispensation.

Humanity is not following an uncharted course. There is a divine Plan in the Cosmos of which we are a part. At the end of an age human resources and established institutions seem inadequate to meet world needs and problems. At such a time the advent of a Teacher, a spiritual leader or Avatar, is anticipated and invoked by the masses of humanity in all parts of the world.

Today the reappearance of the World Teacher, the Christ, is expected by millions, not only by those of Christian faith but by those of every faith who expect the Avatar under other names -- the Lord Maitreya, Krishna, Messiah, Imam Mahdi and the Bodhisattva.

Glamour and distortion surround this central fact of divine response to human need. This is inevitable but unimportant. The fact of transition into a new age is important. Preparation by men and women of goodwill is needed to introduce new values for living, new standards of behaviour, new attitudes of non-separateness and cooperation, leading to right human relations and a world at peace. The coming world Teacher will be mainly concerned, not with the result of past error and inadequacy, but with the requirements of a new world order and with the re-organisation of the social structure.

6. THE GREAT INVOCATION

And what is this Great Invocation, which has for decades been printed on millions of bookmarks and in the front of every Alice Bailey book published by Lucis Trust? The term invocation means "calling down," "calling forth," "calling into." While the Great Invocation has been described as a call for "the Christ to return to Earth", the Lucis trust certainly has inflated ideas about the invocation, stating that

“The Great Invocation if given widespread distribution, can be to the new world religion what the L ord's Prayer has been to Christianity and the 23rd Psalm has been to t he spiritually minded Jew”. “No one can use this Invocation or prayer for illumination and for love without causing powerful changes in his own attitudes and his life intention; characte r and goals will be changed and life altered and made spiritually useful. " in his heart so is he" is a basic law in nature; the constant turning of the mind to the need for light and the prospect of illumination cannot and will not be ineffectual.”

“The science of invocation is in reality the intelligent organisation of spiritual energy and of the forces of love, and these, when effective, will evoke the response of spiritual Beings Who can work openly among men and thus establish a close relation and a constant communication between humanity and the spiritual Hierarchy.”

“It is a request, a demand, an appeal to higher energies and intelligences and is based on inner action, which is no less effective than outer action.”

The Invocation was given Alice Bailey by ‘the Tibetan’, who revised (or added stanzas) several times. The first stanza given her in 1936 and the last revision took place in 1945. It now reads.

From the point of Light within the Mind of God Let light stream forth into the minds of men. Let Light descend on Earth. From the point of Love within the Heart of God Let love stream forth into the hearts of men. May Christ return to Earth. From the centre where the Will of God is known Let purpose guide the little wills of men – The purpose which the Masters know and serve. From the centre which we call the race of men Let the Plan of Love and Light work out And may it seal the door where evil dwells. Let Light and Love and Power restore the Plan on Earth. [18B]

The 1940 version started with the words.

Let the Lords of Liberation issue forth. Let them bring succour to the sons of men. Let the Rider from the Secret Place come forth, And coming, save. Come forth, O Mighty One.

“The Tibetan” said the following about the Invocation

“The call to participate of all who can be reached advising them of the day of opportunity, mobilising them for a vast world effort to arouse afresh a spirit of good will, and calling for a united use of The Great Invocation on the day of The Wesak full moon. Every possible effort must be made by the workers in every county to increase the numbers of those who use this Invocation, and to familiarise the public with the ideals for which the New Group of World Servers stands. All whom you can reach in the countries of the world must be instructed and helped to spread the use of the Invocation in their own language, and with the wording that will make it acceptable, and a widespread effort must be made to organise its simultaneous use on the day of the May full moon. Those who use it must be instructed to say the words aloud, thus making a volume of sound of real potency, and they must say it with all the power of their wills behind it. It is the invocation of the "will to good" that is the objective of the Forces Who can aid at this time. This realisation is of paramount importance.”

Without mentioning the source, Barbara Marx Hubbard quotes the final verse of The Great Invocation, on page 216 of her 1998 book . She states that the goal of this book is

“…that it serve the fulfillment of the plan. 'May Light and Love and Power restore the plan on Earth.' That is my prayer."

The Invocation, which as you know by now, goes on to say.

"From the centre where the Will of God is known Let purpose guide the little wills of men - The purpose which the Masters know and serve."

7. OCCULT MEDITATION

One way to “materialize” the Hierarchy’s plan for humanity is the practice of occult meditation, of which the Lucis Trust says,

“Occult meditation is a means of consciously and purposefully directing energy from a recognised source to the creation of some specific effect…Not only is ‘energy’ directed towards a specific outcome but it builds on itself and continuously grows. Apparently each meditation session brings us just a fraction closer to ‘The Plan’ … or as one meditation site puts it.. “to ensure a the awakening of all into the New Age Millennium. Today countless serving groups large and small meet regularly throughout the world at the time of the full moon each month for meditation work. It is helpful to realize that such meetings for group meditation as a service to humanity have been held for many decades now. So the work does not start anew every month or every year. Over the years a usable group channel for energy distribution has been created which continuously grows and builds on what has been achieved, and which demands of us at all times a deepened understanding and an increased ability to penetrate to new levels of consciousness, so lifting the consciousness of humanity as a whole even by an immeasurable fraction.”

Bailey taught that certain moments of the year are especially fruitful times for spiritual work because an abundance of spiritual energy is available, which is why the Aquarian Age Community’s meditation schedule which has previously taken place in the United Nations Meditation Room and is open to the public, corresponds exactly with the Full Moon phases. Bailey said,

“Such a time is the monthly period of the full moon, when members of the school gather on the evening of the full moon to meditate and transmit energy. On three full moon dates the great festivals Easter, Wesak, and Goodwill take place. The festival of Easter does not follow either of the Christian calendars, but is celebrated on the full moon in April as the time of the most active forces for the restoration of the Christ. In May, Wesak is the time when the Buddha’s forces are available. In June, at the full moon, the forces of reconstruction are active”….The time of the full moon is a period when spiritual energies are uniquely available and facilitate a closer rapport between humanity and the Hierarchy.”

In the words of the Tibetan ‘Master’ Djwhal Khul:

“The spirit of Invocation, of longing for and reaching for contact with higher beings is strengthened at Full Moon. At each Full Moon, a stream of love is poured forth by all Masters and initiates who have taken at least the Third Initiation.”

Dr. Robert Muller who was assistant to three Secretary-Generals of the UN, director of the Secretary- General’s Office and director of the UN Economic and Social Council (UNESCO) wrote a book called The Desire to be Human . In his book Muller rewrites the first chapter of the Book of Genesis, describing the United Nations as “The New Genesis”. This sentiment is also featured prominently on his website.

“And God saw that all nations of the earth, black and white, rich and poor, from North or South, from East and West, and of all creeds were sending their emissaries to a tall glass house on the shores of the River of the Rising Sun, on the Island of Manhattan, to stand together, to think together, and to care together for the world and all its people. And God said: ‘That is good.’ And it was the first day of the New Age of the Earth” (The Desire to be Human: A Global Reconnaissance of Human Perspectives in an Age of Transformation, 1983, p. 17).

At the 20th Anniversary of the U.N. Meditation Room, he said

'Meditation, prayer, dream, hope, vision, guidance, foreseeing and planning all go hand in hand in so many different ways at the U.N. For me the tall building of the U.N. is an edifice of human hope and dream jutting into the universe and receiving from that universe increasingly clearer messages. Perhaps we have reached a time of cosmic evolution. Little by little, a planetary prayer book is being composed by an increasingly united humanity seeking its oneness, its happiness, its consciousness and its full participation in the continuous process of creation'. MAITREYA THE COMING – PREPARING HIS COMING

Apparently Muller is not the only one the have such a grandiose vision of the United Nations. Alice Bailey made several references to the United Nations in her books.

"Within the United Nations is the germ and seed of a great international and meditating, reflective group-a group of thinking and informed men and women in whose hands lies the destiny of humanity. This is largely under the control of many fourth ray disciples, if you could but realize it, and their point of meditative focus is the intuitional or buddhic plane-the plane upon which all hierarchical activity is today to be found…'The expression of divine love is still in the making and few there are that understand the true meaning of the word. But speaking symbolically-when the U.N. has emerged into factual and actual power, the welfare of the world will then be assured . What is that welfare but love in action? What are right human relations but love among men, groups and nations? What is international cooperation but love on a world scale? Those are the things which the love of God in Christ expressed and those are the things which we are working here today (through the U.N.) to bring into being. We are attempting to do it on a vast scale. These are the things which the Hierarchy is aiding and will continue to aid.'

According to the web site of the Aquarian Age Community, Alice Bailey said in The Reappearance of the Christ

“that the one who works to produce atonement, unification and fusion is generating a slowly growing will-to-unity within the Assembly of the United Nations. This being can only channel His energies through the mass consciousness or through a group conscious entity, such as the U.N.”

It is believed that even the fact that the UN is located in New York city is “spiritually significant”. The Seven Ray Institute/University of the Seven Rays in Jersey City, which “serve as vehicles for the presentation of the Ageless Wisdom teachings at this time of preparation for the return of the World Teacher”, and who’s work includes “Support of the United Nations so that it can realize the vision contained within its Charter” says…

“According to the teachings of the Ageless Wisdom, New York is one of what is called the “five planetary centers”-- along with London, Geneva, Darjeeling and Tokyo. These centers, or “chakras”, are the points for the inflow and distribution of energy that animates the life of the planet as a whole. New York, because of its strategic position as the central point within these five centers (which upon the etheric planes constitute two intersecting triangles), holds a position of tremendous influence within the planet. This is surely the reason why it is situated here….In the writings of Alice Bailey the United Nations is described as a “point of tension” that “will eventually prove to be the agent that will bring about a ‘point of emergence’” for humanity as a whole.”

The Aquarian Age Community proffers the thought that when this ‘christ’ returns, it is not outside the realm of possibility that he will return through the United Nations.

“Let us now consider some thoughts on the reappearance of the Christ in relation to the U.N. The Tibetan Master has said it is in the hands of the masses of right thinking people in every land that the salvation of the world lies and by them the preparatory work for the coming of the Christ will be done. The Tibetan Master says He will come when mankind is ready. It may not be unreasonable to suppose that the Christ may return to Earth through the ' house' of the nations. If He wishes to reach the people of all nations, what better place than the focal point of the nations, humanity's point of tension-the U.N.? Perhaps this may be thought of as 'the Son returns to the Father's House'. Again it would not be beyond reason to expect that one of the first places He would visit would be the U.N., to see how, through humanity, the plan is working out. Perhaps Dag Hammarskjöld and U Thant may be considered as forerunners, as 20th Century John the Baptists.”

8. WESAK

Lucis Trust tells us that there are three major spiritual festivals

“The three spiritual Festivals of Easter, the great Western festival celebrated at the Aries full moon; Wesak, the great Eastern festival celebrated at the full moon of Taurus; and the Festival of Goodwill – the Christ’s festival – celebrated at the Gemini full moon, are a demonstration of the links that unite a number of religious traditions – Christianity, Judaism which provided the base for the Christ’s work, Islam which Alice Bailey described as being "a hybrid offshoot of Christianity", and Buddhism, with its historical link to Hinduism”.

Wesak (or Vesak), is celebrated at the time of the full moon in May by practicing Buddhists in many Asian countries, and festivals at this time, are a centuries-old tradition, magnified, perhaps, by the 1950 decision to include the Buddha’s birthday in the festival. Hence, on Wesak, Buddhists all over the world commemorate three events: The Birth, Enlightenment and death of Gautama Buddha.

However the Legend of Wesak, or the convergence of Buddha, Christ and other Masters in the hallowed Wesak Valley in the Himalayas during the Buddha full moon (in May of each year), has far more ominous overtones. We are told that,

“Year after year He comes back in blessing; year after year, He and His great brother, The Christ, work in the closest cooperation for the spiritual benefit of humanity.”

While, the exact location of this deeply spiritual event in western Tibet has not been confirmed, some believe it takes place at Mount Kailash in western Tibet, considered sacred to the Bon the ancient indigenous culture of Tibet, but also considered Shiva’s throne by the Hindus. The following paragraph, while slightly digressing from the topic at hand, goes to shows that while a mountain being “Shiva’s Throne” sounds romantic and grand, the reality is a little different.

Shiva and Kali: For the uninitiated, Shiva happens to be the Hindu god of destruction, usually depicted with a serpent around his neck, holding a trident and inextricably linked with Kali, the Hindu goddess associated with death and destruction. Kali is portrayed mostly in two forms: the popular four-armed form and the ten- armed Mahakali form. In both of her forms, she is described as being black in color but is most often depicted as blue in popular Indian art. Her eyes are described as red with intoxication and in absolute rage, her hair is shown disheveled, small fangs sometimes protrude out of her mouth and her tongue is lolling. She is often shown naked or just wearing a skirt made of human arms and a garland of human heads. She MAITREYA THE COMING

MAITREYA THE COMING – PREPARING HIS COMING is also accompanied by serpents and a jackal while standing on a seemingly dead Shiva. In the four armed version each hand holds a sword, a trishul (trident), a severed head and a bowl or skull-cup catching the blood of the severed head.

According to a May 2000 issue of Benjamin Crème’s Share International by Josephine Harrison, It is described by Alice A. Bailey and C.W. Leadbeater.

“as taking place in a bottleneck-shaped valley carpeted with coarse grass, the mountainsides covered with trees, on the north side of the Himalayas about 400 miles west of Lhasa.”

Harrison goes on to describe the event, which differs very little from Bailey’s description.

“At the sacred event in Tibet, the energy from Shamballa is released upon earth through the Buddha. During the ceremony, which lasts about half an hour, a group of Great Beings, the Knowers of the race, arrange themselves at the northeastern end of the valley in front of a flat rock on which rests a crystal bowl filled with water. The three heads of the departments of Hierarchy — the Manu, Maitreya the Christ, and the Mahachohan — and the Masters of the Seven Rays move in symbolic forms while verses in the ancient Pali language are chanted. At the peak of the ceremony the grouped Masters and Their disciples form a five-pointed star, with Maitreya standing at the apex, facing the altar rock. At the moment of the full moon the Buddha appears, sitting cross-legged in His saffron robe. He first appears as a tiny speck in the sky. Leadbeater describes the Buddha as becoming a gigantic figure with a brilliant from which emanates a glorious ultramarine, then golden yellow, crimson, pure silvery white and scarlet, with brilliant rays of green and violet shooting out from these spheres of light. The colours are also described as the Buddha’s aura in ancient Buddhist scriptures. This radiant Being hovers over the crystal bowl and the three Great Lords. A mantram, used only at this Festival, is intoned by Maitreya. This is the supreme moment of spiritual vitalization of humanity as the energies from Shamballa, transmitted through the Buddha, are received by Maitreya as representative of humanity. The water in the crystal bowl is then held up and blessed by Him, as the participants in the ceremony come forward, one at a time, to sip the water. Pilgrims, who find their way to the valley from central Asia, bring their flasks of water to participate in this final blessing. The ceremony ends when the Buddha holds up His right hand in blessing as He slowly recedes and is seen again as a tiny speck in the sky.”

No cost is too great to pay in order to be of use to the Hierarchy at the time of…the Wesak Festival; no price is too high in order to gain the spiritual illumination which can be possible ... at that time." [ Discipleship in the New Age I , P. 629]

The Festival of Wesak is the festival of Buddha, the spiritual intermediary between Shamballa and Hierarchy." [The Externalisation of the Hierarchy, Pgs. 420 – 421]

"At Wesak, the Manu, the Christ, and the Mahachohan invoke the Buddha." [The Externalisation of the Hierarchy, P. 160]

"Once a year at Wesak, the Buddha transmits a dual stream of force — one stream from the Silent Watcher, or higher counterpart of Sanat Kumara, and one stream from Sanat Kumara himself." [Initiation, Human and Solar, Pgs. 104 – 105]

"Wesak links east and west, Buddha and Christ, Shamballa and Hierarchy, purpose and love." [The Externalisation of the Hierarchy, P. 227

9. ADDITIONAL APOSTLES AND MEDIUMS

Phineas Parkhurst Quimby (1802– 1866) was a 19th century unschooled Maine clockmaker and inventor who believed that he had rediscovered the lost healing methods of Jesus. He was the earliest identifiable proponent of what came to be known as . Charles and , founders of the Unity School of Christianity were Quimby's students, while , the founder of , was likewise influenced by him. Additionally Phineas Quimby's metaphysical teachings influenced E.W. Kenyon, and it was E.W. Kenyon's teachings that in turn influenced Kenneth Hagin, known as the father of the Word/Faith movement. The loosely organized movement that began with Phineas Parkhurst Quimby, stretched it's tentacles to an unbelievable extent.

Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 -1882) a one-time Unitarian clergyman, was known as a Transcendentalist and considered a major forerunner to the New Thought Movement. He was described as a "pioneer New World diffuser of metaphysical and transcendental thought and Oriental philosophy". He was an enthusiastic supporter of Swedenborg and greatly taken with the Bhagavad Gita , which is said to have appealed to him with "compelling power". Emerson's writings fused the metaphysical thought of India, Greece, and modern .

Note: Transcendentalism was a literary and philosophical movement which asserted the existence of an ideal spiritual reality that transcends the empirical and scientific, and is knowable through .

Annie Besant (1847 – 1933) was Helena Blavatsky's successor. As a member and later leader of the Theosophical Society, Besant helped to spread Theosophical beliefs around the world, notably in India. She believed her protégé and adopted son, Jiddu Krishnamurti, to be the incarnation of Buddha and the new Messiah.

Napoleon Hill (1883 – 1970) Hill, one of the early pioneers of "new Thought" was, reportedly, not seeking contact with spirit beings when he was suddenly confronted in his study by an unexpected and uninvited intruder who informed him that he had been "under the guidance of the Great School" for years and had been chosen by them to give the formula of success, the "Supreme Secret," to the world. Think and Grow Rich, published in 1937, at the end of the Great Depression, is still popular after 60 years. Hill later co- authored Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude with Clement Stone.

The Indian Swamis (notably Vivekananda (1863 – 1902), an adherent of Vedanta), who first brought Hinduism to the West in the late 19th century, were also influential. Note that, according to the Vedanta Center of Greater Washington, DC... "Vedanta represents the philosophical portion of the ancient scriptures of India, the Vedas... The basic teaching concerns the ultimate identity of the individual soul with the Supreme Soul. The goal of Vedanta is for the seeker to have the direct experience of his or her true nature, and it is held that each and every one of us is qualified to have that highest illumination, if we are willing to put forth sincere and intense effort.

Jane Roberts and J.Z. Knight Also influential were the claims of channelers and J.Z. Knight (Judy Zebra Knight).

Jane Roberts would go into a trance, during which 'Seth' would assume control of her body and speak through her, while her husband wrote down the words she spoke. The results were known as the and were published in eleven volumes from 1963 to 1984.

J.Z. Knight channeled Ramtha , who claimed to be 35,000-year-old warrior spirit who once conquered , and who's message was "You are God, and therefore capable of creating any reality you desire, if MAITREYA THE COMING

MAITREYA THE COMING – PREPARING HIS COMING not now, then in a later incarnation." In 1988 J. Z. Knight established Ramtha's School of Enlightenment (RSE), an American-based spiritual school near the rural town of Yelm, Washington. The school has been criticized for like tendencies, but former students and which has often been accused of cult like activities.

Widespread use of the term New Age, which began in the mid 1970s, was reflected in the title of a new monthly periodical, the New Age Journal , created in 1974 "to help each of us rethink the way we live". It was said to be remarkably ahead of its time publishing works by mythologist Joseph Campbell; spiritual teacher ; integrative medicine proponent Andrew Weil, MD; women's health pioneer Christiane Northrup, MD; renowned author , MD; and life coach Cheryl Richardson long before their ideas became popular with the general public". (Incidentally the New Age Journal was renamed Body + Soul in 2001, then sold in 2004 to Martha Stewart Living).

The highly publicized Harmonic Convergence brought the New Age movement into the public eye. It was a worldwide esoteric-religious event, which took place on two consecutive days in August 1987. It was centered on a number of "sacred" places throughout the world from Stonehenge and Mount Shasta, to the Golden Gate Bridge and Crestone, Colorado, where individuals gathered to usher in a new era. Many of these people referred to themselves as "light beings" who claimed to have received divine guidance from the astral realms about the current state of Earth and the necessity of transformation. From that time on any number of small metaphysical book and gift stores increasingly defined themselves as "New Age bookstores".

Linda Goodman's best selling astrology books Sun Signs (1968) and Love Signs (1978) went a long way towards raising public awareness of the New Age subculture as did the American Tribal Love-Rock Musical (1967) with the opening song " Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In ", and its memorable line "This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius".
