Teen Recs August 4: Star Wars Women CHRISTINE Click to learn about Summer Reading. RECOMMENDS... Virtual raffle tickets can win real prizes! E.K. Johnston & the Women of Star Wars YA author E.K. Johnston has written three Star Wars novels, all about unsung female characters. The first was about Ahsoka Tano, a fan favorite character with a huge gap in her onscreen story. This novel follows Ahsoka between the TV series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. Following the devastating execution of Order 66, Ahsoka is unsure she can be part of an organization ever again, but her need to fight the Empire and protect the vulnerable is strong. It's not long before she crosses paths with the Rebel Alliance. If you're a fan of Clone Wars or Rebels, I recommend you try the audiobook. It's narrated by the actress Ashley Eckstein, who voices Ahsoka on the shows. Get the print book via Get the e-audiobook Contactless Holds Pickup on the Libby app Queen's Shadow fills in the gap between Padmé the teenage queen of Naboo and Padmé the galactic senator. E.K. Johnston was thrilled to write about Padmé and her handmaidens because they are often left out of conversations about the women of Star Wars (probably because the prequels are widely derided). She sums up the appeal of these two novels better than I can: "[Y]ou have these girls who are really good at fashion and espionage and hand-to-hand combat. And they can fly ships. And they can shoot people. But they can also read body language really well and infiltrate meetings and they're completely invisible" (source). If you're a Star Wars fan who wanted more from the Get the e-audiobook Get the print books prequels, or if you just love stoic female characters with of Queen's Shadow via Contactless lots of emotions brewing under the surface, give these on the Libby app Holds Pickup two novels a try. “Wars Do Not Make One Great”: Race, Empire, and Orientalism in Star Wars: The Clone Wars by Mohammed Shakibnia A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Arts in Political Science and Philosophy (Honors Scholar) Presented June 1st, 2020 Commencement June 2021 1 2 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Mohammed Shakibnia for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate Arts in Political Science and Philosophy presented on June 1, 2020. Title: “Wars Do Not Make One Great”: Race, Empire, and Orientalism in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Joseph Orosco This project explores how science fiction can be used to examine social justice issues in our contemporary world. I will explore two case studies from the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series through a framework of race, empire, and orientalism. Walidah Imarisha’s notion of “visionary fiction” is utilized as a lens to explore how speculative fiction can serve as a tool to understand critical real world issues, and how The Clone Wars allows audiences to envision more just futures. These case studies surround the oppression faced by alien communities in The Clone Wars and are connected to issues of empire and racial inequality experienced by Muslims and Black people in the United States. The first case study uses Edward Said’s Orientalism as a framework to discuss the roots of Islamophobia, empire, the “clash of civilizations”. I connect Said’s work to the treatment of the Talz, an indigenous alien race in The Clone Wars, who face settler-colonial violence and ethnic cleansing from the Pantorans, a group represented by the Republic.

  • Ahsoka Tano Is Probably the Most Popular Character Among Hard Core Star Wars Fans Right Now
1 You’re listening to Imaginary Worlds, a show about how we create them and why we suspend our disbelief. I’m Eric Molinsky. Star Wars is probably the most mainstream sci-fi fantasy franchise. It’s a right of passage to watch the original trilogy for many kids. But many Star Wars fans don’t know much beyond the movies. The comics, the novels, the animated TV shows – that’s considered for hardcore fans. And if Baby Yoda hadn’t taken the Internet by storm, I suspect The Mandalorian would have fallen into that camp as well. But today we’re going to hear from some people who may convince you to give that other material a chance – like Amy Richau, who writes for Star Wars dot com. AMY: The more and more people I talk to, a lot of people who are heavily involved, who are writing about it both professionally and who are doing podcasts and going to server celebration and are kind of, you know, the people who I think likely are going to, you know, grow into positions where they are creators themselves of like official Star Wars things. A lot of them don't hold the original trilogy on the pedestal that so many of us do still the original trilogy is still probably, always going to be my favorite Star Wars, but it really, really makes me happy that it's not everyone's favorite Star Wars. I think as long as Star Wars can continue to create content that stands on its own and can be a different entry point, then we'll just get more and more Star Wars.

  • Race, Gender, and Colonialism in the Star Wars Universe
Office of Graduate Student Services, Wesleyan University . Wesleyan ♦ University . THE POWER OF THE FORCE: RACE, GENDER, AND COLONIALISM IN THE STAR WARS UNIVERSE By John Paul Pianka Faculty Advisor: Professor Robert Steele A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Wesleyan University in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Master of Arts . Middletown, Connecticut May 2013 i Acknowledgements Thank you, first and foremost, to Bob Steele, my advisor for this project and a professor who every day challenges me to second guess my surroundings, my culture, and even my favorite things in the world (as evidenced by this thesis). My first class with you, a class in which I initially enrolled hoping it would be an easy A, fundamentally changed the way I look at movies, television, and the world itself. Five classes with you wasn’t enough. Thank you as well to all the professors of the Psychology Department, who helped me find and cultivate my academic passions. Thank you also for allowing me to spend one more year here, learning and writing about something near and dear to my heart. I could not have written this thesis without the enduring support of my friends, particularly those in Alpha Delta Phi. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to find anyone who shared my passion for Star Wars enough to help me critique my ideas, but I was happy to find many friends here whose passion for Star Wars as well as Cultural Psychology far exceeds my own. A particular thank you to Chelsea Goldsmith, for constantly keeping me from being lazy and making sure I didn’t attend Celebration VI alone; to Victor Pesola, whose knowledge on the subject makes me feel considerably less terrible about the time I’ve spent in the Star Wars universe (and on the Wesleyan campus for that matter!); to Richard Fessler, for the numerous Clone Wars marathons we shared under the pretense of “thesis research;” and to fellow sci- fi film aficionados Jake Lane and Will Donald, for five years of great conversations, many of which made it into this thesis one way or another.
