ABSTRACT This study examines the perceived credibility of professional photojournalism in context to the usage of User-Generated Content (UGC) when compared across digital news and social media platforms, by individual news consumers in the United States employing a Q methodology experiment. The literature review studies source credibility as the theoretical framework through which to begin; however, using an inductive design, the data may indicate additional patterns and themes. Credibility as a news concept has been studied in terms of print media, broadcast and cable television, social media, and inline news, both individually and between genres. Very few studies involve audience perceptions of credibility, and even fewer are concerned with visual images. Using online Q methodology software, this experiment was given to 100 random participants who sorted a total of 40 images labeled with photographer and platform information. The data revealed that audiences do discern the source of the image, in both the platform and the photographer, but also take into consideration the category of news image in their perception of the credibility of an image. -

Each publication has a set of rules, sometimes written, sometimes unwritten, that governs what that publication considers to be a truthful and faithful representation of images to the public. These rules cover a wide range of topics such as how a photographer should act while taking pictures, what he or she can and can’t photograph, and whether and how an image can be altered in the darkroom or on the computer. -

Photojournalism For this section, we'll be looking at photojournalism's impact on shaping people's opinions of the news & world events. Photojournalism From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Photojournalism is a particular form of journalism (the collecting, editing, and presenting of news material for publication or broadcast) that employs images in order to tell a news story. It is now usually understood to refer only to still images, but in some cases the term also refers to video used in broadcast journalism. Photojournalism is distinguished from other close branches of photography (e.g., documentary photography, social documentary photography, street photography or celebrity photography) by complying with a rigid ethical framework which demands that the work be both honest and impartial whilst telling the story in strictly journalistic terms. Photojournalists create pictures that contribute to the news media, and help communities connect with one other. Photojournalists must be well informed and knowledgeable about events happening right outside their door. They deliver news in a creative format that is not only informative, but also entertaining. Timeliness The images have meaning in the context of a recently published record of events. Objectivity The situation implied by the images is a fair and accurate representation of the events they depict in both content and tone. Narrative The images combine with other news elements to make facts relatable to audiences. Like a writer, a photojournalist is a reporter, but he or she must often make decisions instantly and carry photographic equipment, often while exposed to significant obstacles (e.g., physical danger, weather, crowds, physical access). -

The “Cosmopolitan Art”: FIAP Yearbooks of Photography, 1954–1960 Alise Tifentale, The Graduate Center, City University of New York [Research paper presented at the CAA 2017 in New York City, February 17, 2017, at the session “Photography in Print.”] “It is a diversified, yet tempered picture book containing surprises on every page, a mirror to pulsating life, a rich fragment of cosmopolitan art, a pleasure ground of phantasy”—this is how, in March 1956, the editorial board of Camera magazine introduced the latest photography yearbook by the International Federation of Photographic Art (Fédération internationale de l'art photographique, FIAP). By examining the first four FIAP Yearbooks, published between 1954 and 1960 on a biennial basis,1 this paper aims to reconstruct some of the ideals behind the work of FIAP and to understand the “cosmopolitan art” of photography promoted by this organization. FIAP, a non-governmental and transnational association, was founded in Switzerland in 1950 and aimed at uniting the world’s photographers. It consisted of national associations of photographers, representing 55 countries: seventeen in Western Europe, thirteen in Asia, ten in Latin America, six in Eastern Europe, four in Middle East, three in Africa, one in North America, and Australia. As with many non-governmental organizations established around 1950, its membership was global, but the founders and leaders were based in Western Europe— Belgium, Switzerland, France, and West Germany. Some photojournalists dedicate themselves to telling other people's stories, documenting history and finding alternative ways to disseminate their work to audiences. Many self-fund their projects, not just for the love of the tradition, but also because they feel a sense of responsibility to tell stories that are at times outside the mainstream media’s focus. Some do this through necessity. While most photojournalism research has focused on photographers who are employed by media organisations, little, if any, has been undertaken concerning photojournalists who are freelancers. -

He lives and works in Paris, France. His photo-journalism was first published in France-Soir Magazine and subsequently in the daily France-Soir in 1981. Starting from 1989, a selection of his black and white photographs of Paris were produced as postcards by Éditions Marion Valentine. He often met the photographer Édouard Boubat on the île Saint-Louis in Paris and at the Publimod laboratory in the rue du Roi de Sicile. Having seen his photographs, Boubat told him: “at the end of the day, we are all doing the same thing...” When featured in the magazine Le Monde 2 in 2007 his work was noticed by gallery owner Charles Zalber who exhibited his photographs at the gallery Photo4 managed by Victor Mendès. Work His work is in the tradition of humanist photography and Street photography, using the same material as many of the forerunners of this style: Kodak Tri-X black and white film, silver bromide prints on baryta paper, Leica M3 or Leica M4 with a 50 or 90 mm lens. The thin black line surrounding the prints shows that the picture has not been cropped. His inspiration came from Henri Cartier-Bresson, Édouard Boubat, Saul Leiter. His portrait of Aguigui Mouna sticking his tongue out like Albert Einstein, published in postcard form in 1988, and subsequently as an illustration in a book by Anne Gallois served as a blueprint for a stencil work by the artist Jef Aérosol in 2006 subsequently reproduced in the book VIP. -

At the same time, the photos taken immediately distributed among and used in different media organs. In the beginning, the news were distributed by using a specific technique in the emerging agencies, before the photos. The economic reasons were determining factors at establishment of the news agencies in different European countries and in Northern America. Before that, hand-written commercial news letters were disseminated by copying them again by hand-writing. The qualified news coming on time in commercial and capitalist system became important as much as production. Thus, the new circles and groups emerged which were ready to pay for reaching quickly to news. When those increased in numbers, it was realized that the dissemination of news to large areas could be a profitable job. Consequently, the ‘news agencies’ as institutions emerged as a response to a rising need. Today, the news agencies with specific responsibilities in the global communication network just transmit the news and visual material. But some agencies only work on the photos. These agencies transmit photos to all news centers in a short time by connecting with a contracted photographer in that region, or in a region close to the event. -

)** The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART DEDICATES ERNA AND VICTOR HASSELBLAD PHOTOGRAPHY STUDY CENTER October 21, 1985, New York King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, Officers of the Museum and of the Erna and Victor Hasselblad Foundation, and members of the Museum's Trustee Committee for Photography today were among the guests at the formal dedication of the Erna and Victor Hasselblad Photography Study Center. "Today...is an important day for Sweden and for the Hasselblad Foundation," said Alf Akerman, chairman of the Board of the Hasselblad Foundation. "A new channel has been formed for contacts and a cultural gate has been opened which we hope will be of importance for further development of good relations between our countries." William S. Paley, chairman of the Board of Trustees, The Museum of Modern Art, stated, "We are both grateful and proud that the Hasselblad Foundation has made this extraordinary gift. We are grateful for what it enables our Study Center to do. We are proud of the international recognition it represents. And we are also proud that our Study Center now bears so distinguished a name." Although the Department of Photography has maintained a study center since 1964, its greatly expanded new facility is named in honor of the Hasselblads, as a gesture of gratitude to the Foundation that bears their names. An unprecedented gift from the Foundation will enable the Department of Photography to sustain and expand its capacity for sharing its rare resources and research materials with the larger photography community. John Szarkowski, director of the Department of Photography, has described this community as "an international audience, transcending national or regional perspectives." Since the Department of Photography first made its collection, library, and supporting archives available to the public for study, it has devoted an increasing amount of thought and attention to its study center.
