The Opportunity

In collaboration with the Head Teacher, the Deputy Head Teacher will provide effective, dynamic and inspirational leadership in order to enable PEAS school to achieve the set education outcomes. He/she will actively support in setting direction for the school to enable all learners to reach their full potential, and to translate the school vision into a whole school curriculum with consistency and high expectations. This will be in addition to carrying out the professional duties of a teacher.

We build and run high quality not-for-profit secondary schools in close partnership with government in communities where there is urgent unmet demand for secondary education.

In 2008, we built and opened our first school in Uganda and now we run a school network of 28 schools in Uganda and 4 in Zambia. We are proud of what we have achieved:

 Building and running two school networks of 32 schools serving over 15,000 students;  Helping students who start further behind than their peers to catch up by the time they leave our schools;  Running schools where all students feel safe and cared for;  Keeping our fees low and working hand-in-hand with communities, so that children from some of the poorest backgrounds attend our schools;  Opening the first ever zero day-fee secondary school in Zambia by securing a ground-breaking partnership with the government.

After rigorous external studies in recent years, we know our school model works. In Uganda, PEAS students are from the poorest households and have worse primary school exam results than average. Once they enrol in a PEAS school they go on to make faster academic progress than their more privileged peers. Importantly, this is achieved at a lower cost per student than in other school types.

The next chapter We are proud of our success so far, but we believe that no matter how well we are doing, we can always do better. Our students and schools come first and we are committed to delivering the best possible results for our students, every day.

After 10 years of growth in Uganda, now is the time to take stock and make PEAS fit for the future. As a team, we have agreed what is working best in our schools, and also where we want to achieve even more. That has meant an ambitious new plan for school support, and hiring some great new roles to deliver it. We want PEAS schools to be the best in Uganda, and we are looking for passionate and ambitious individuals to join us on that mission.

PEAS has achieved great things in the last 10 years, and we know we can achieve even more in the next 10 years. So as a team, we look to the next ten years with excitement and energy to make this a reality.

A high quality secondary education increases people’s lifetime earning potential and helps them and their children to live healthier lives, yet 264 million young people are currently out of school and the vast majority of these young people are of secondary school age. PEAS wants every young person in Sub-Saharan Africa to have the opportunity to receive a high quality secondary education that can transform their lives.

Roles and Responsibilities

Education Management • To drive high performance expectations for Heads of Departments and class teachers. • Promote a culture of caring and trust among PEAS School staff, setting the tone for respectful interaction with students, and demonstrating a willingness to change practices in the light of new understandings. • Support Head Teacher in establishing a school structure that promotes participative decision making, supporting delegation and distributive leadership. • Assume responsibility for setting teacher specific subject targets across all classes. • Drive continuous use of School Information system, and utilization of school data to inform planning and learning interventions. • Lead staff in reflective meetings and review of performance progress towards set targets. • Facilitates opportunities for staff to learn from each other and teams. • Prepare academic plans, schedules and program for the school. • Organizes and assists in the management and implementation of the curriculum. • Ensures there is integrity of internal and external exams through good administration and supervision

Leadership • Develops and maintains active and productive relationships with PEAS Country Office, Board members (BOG), PTA and School Administration. • Direct Line Management of Heads of Department and Teachers; including performance targets and appraisals. • Provide regular feedback to staff in a way which recognizes good practice and supports their progress against professional and performance management objectives resulting in a tangible impact on students learning. • Communicating and justifying to staff compliance expectations with all applicable government regulations and policies, as well as PEAS’ own policies.

Finance Management • Jointly accountable for school budget and expenditure with the Head-teacher. • Collates and prioritizes departmental resource requirements and to work with the Head Teacher to requisition and procure necessary materials cost-effectively from reputable suppliers.

• Provide oversight guidance to the school procurement committee

Governance • Works with the PEAS Country Office, Board of Governor, Parents - Teachers Association and the Head Teacher to develop strategies to initiate and meet strategic and ambitious school goals. • Work with the Head Teacher in resourcing of potential teaching and non-teaching staff. • Enforce positive school discipline • Execute any other duty assigned by the Head Teacher

Experience & Qualifications:

• Degree in Arts or Science with Education from a recognized university. • Registered as a Graduate Teacher with the Ministry of Education and Sports. • At least 5 years’ experience in teaching with 2 years in a leadership role • Experience of whole school curriculum management leading to school improvement • Proven experience of leading and managing whole school developments in a number of areas regarding teaching & learning and raising standards of attainment and achievement across the school. • Good understanding and use of assessment, including target setting and tracking of learners’ progress. • Ability to set high and clear expectations, to hold others accountable for performance and the contributions they make to the school progress • Able to demonstrate leadership qualities and people management skills • Able to motivate, promote good relationships and effectively communicate with all stakeholders. • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and adults • Willingness to reside within the school premises.
