Creating Places for People.

BDP designs and creates inspiring places for people. With international teams of architects, engineers, designers, and urbanists, we work from studios throughout the UK, and in Ireland, the Netherlands, the UAE, India, and China, on projects around the world.

Founded in 1961, BDP is now the largest interdisciplinary design-led firm in Europe and has won over 750 awards for design quality from international and national bodies.

Our designers focus on designing buildings and environments for the future to confront the reality of a finite planet. We challenge ourselves to create better environments for everybody using five goals as our starting point for the design process: • to act as climate shapers to create protective and positive environments for people to enjoy • to take a creative approach to energy, with natural and technological methods for the use and reuse of energy and resources • to design in a user-inclusive style, engaging in a learning centred approach with the occupiers of our buildings and places • to cross-fertilise our knowledge from different cultures, maximising the advantages of being international, interdisciplinary and multi-sector • to promote and create liberating buildings, places and communities for people to use and adapt over time.

From high profile masterplan-led sports placemaking projects such as our work SPORT for the All Lawn Tennis Club at Wimbledon (AELTC), home to the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships, and our masterplan and redevelopment of Racecourse, home to the internationally renowned steeplechase, through to the design of competition venues, hospitality buildings and community sports facilities, BDP has experience across the full spectrum of sports related projects.

All these projects deliver technical and functional excellence but over and above that, foster a sense of theatre and occasion that only the best venues achieve, enhancing the drama of the collective sporting experience.

Aintree Racecourse, 8 , UK 9 RIBA Awards 2007 Aintree Racecourse, Liverpool 1

Aintree Racecourse, Liverpool, UK Site Masterplan Our masterplan for Aintree Racecourse is designed to enhance the drama of the race day experience and the spectacle of the event. The pre-parade, parade ring and weighing room provide functional space for owners, trainers, jockeys, officials and horses, while improving spectator capacity and viewing for pre-race activities. Two new paired grandstands provide superb views over the racecourse, as well as hospitality facilities for race day and non-race day use. A new horsewalk takes riders out from the parade ring under the ‘saddle bar’ spanning between the stands to the racecourse, as well as providing a spectacular processional return for the winning horses.

10 11 No 1 Court, 12 Wimbledon, UK 13 All England Lawn Tennis Club, Wimbledon, UK Our masterplan for AELTC has transformed Wimbledon into the world class place it is today. Our masterplan reoriented the main public areas creating space for the new No 1 Court and other buildings – as well as providing a substantial service undercroft. It also created space for Henman Hill (now 14 Murray Mound), a BDP invention. 15 As well as developing the masterplan BDP designed and delivered the new No 1 Court complex, including a 15,000 seat arena, hospitality and spectator areas, the high tech Broadcast Centre, and the mixed use Millennium Building for players, officials and members.

All these interventions were designed to enhance the sense of place and extend and develop the experience of watching Tennis in an English Garden, which gives Wimbledon its unique character.

16 17 The Point at Old Trafford, 18 Manchester, UK 19 Lancashire County Cricket Club Redevelopment, Manchester, UK Our masterplan for Lancashire County Cricket Club (LCCC) provides a strategy for the phased redevelopment of their Old Trafford cricket ground, and transforms it into a state of the art 21st century sporting venue, eschewing the traditional language of cricket buildings (harking back to the Edwardian idyll of cucumber sandwiches and cricket on the village green). The redevelopment seeks to capture and enhance the unique character of cricket in the north west of England – giving the buildings an intentionally non traditional iconic presence in bright Lancashire red.

The facilities, delivered in phases include The Point, a 1,000 seat hospitality venue, two new double-decker grandstands, a new players and media building and a substantially remodelled and extended pavilion, with completion in time for the return of the Ashes 20 Test Series in 2013. 21 City Square, Manchester City Football Club, UK Designed and constructed over a single closed season, City Square is a unique and groundbreaking permanent fan zone for Manchester City Football Club. Consisting of covered bar, food areas and a canopied stage, clustered around the existing club shop, City Square is designed to extend the fans’ match day experience by providing a venue for pre and post-match entertainment.

22 23 As well as our masterplans related to specific sporting venues we have developed masterplans for a number of significant city districts containing sports venues and other sporting facilities as part of larger regeneration proposals – both for individual Masterplanning events and for their legacy. 46 47 CULTURE

BDP has great experience in the design of buildings for culture.

Over the past decades we have worked for many of the UK’s most revered cultural institutions including the Royal Opera House, the Royal Ballet Company, Royal Albert Hall and National Maritime Museum. We have also designed highly successful concert halls, theatres and museums including Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, the UK’s most visited museum outside London. Many of these projects involve the retention and refurbishment of existing much loved buildings, preserving and enhancing their character whilst discreetly adapting them both functionally and technically, to make them truly fit for purpose in the 21st century.

In the Village, villas and apartments clustered around private gardens and pools form a sweeping boulevard, leading from the reception area down to the sea, where a boutique hotel luxuriates in uninterrupted views of the Mediterranean.

In the Retreat, a discrete development of chalets and villas set into a secluded and luxuriant landscape, provides levels of privacy and calm that are not available in any other resort.

The phased development comprises the waterfront piazza, marina, retail and commercial suites in Phase 1A and a major retail component known as the Harbour Town shopping centre in Phase 1B. The residential element of the development was completed in time for the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

The latter phases have taken on board key components of the masterplan, particularly the Ferris wheel, which serves as both a destination marker and a major tourist attraction.
