Slowing demand, rising costs squeeze airline profits VW BUREAU

he International Air Transport Associa- Ttion (IATA) announced a downgrade of its 2019 outlook for the global air transport industry to a $28 billion profit (from $35.5 billion forecast in December 2018). That is also a decline in 2018 net post-tax profits which IATA estimates at $30 billion. The business environment for airlines has deteriorated with rising fuel prices and a substantial weakening of world trade. In 2019 overall costs are expected to grow by 7.4%, outpacing a 6.5% rise in revenues. As a result, net margins are expected to be squeezed to 3.2% (from 3.7% in 2018). Profit per passenger will similarly decline to $6.12 (from $6.85 in 2018). “This year will be the tenth consecutive year in the black for the airline industry. But margins are being squeezed by rising costs right across the board—including labor, fuel, and infrastructure. Stiff competition among airlines keeps yields from rising. The weakening of global trade is likely to continue as the US-China trade war in- tensifies. This primarily impacts the cargo business, but passenger traffic could also be impacted as tensions rise. Airlines will still turn a profit this year, but there is no easy money to be made,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s Director General and CEO. In 2019, the return on invested capital earned from airlines is expected to be 7.4% (down from 7.9% in 2018). While this still exceeds the average cost of capital (esti- mated at 7.3%), the buffer is extremely thin. Moreover, the job of spreading financial resilience throughout the industry is only half complete with a major gap in profit- ability between the performance of airlines in North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific and the performance of those in Africa, Lat- in America and the Middle East. “The good news is that airlines have bro- ken the boom-and-bust cycle. A downturn in the trading environment no longer plung- es the industry into a deep crisis. But under current circumstances, the great achieve- ment of the industry—creating value for investors with normal levels of profitability is at risk. Airlines will still create value for investors in 2019 with above cost-of-capital returns, but only just,” said de Juniac. Mixed predictions for hotels & meeting space Planners expect hotel space availability to be flat going into 2019, making events with short lead-times problematic for planners. Europe is the exception, with planners anticipating a 0.7% increase in space availability for next year. Planners in the Americas and the Asia Pacific report no increase in space availability. Fortunately, the outlook for 2020 is better, with more space availability consistently expected across regions. With this flat availability for 2019, planners anticipate a corresponding increase in group hotel rates. This statistic is highest in North America, at 2.41%, followed by Europe at 1.61%. Planners in the Asia Pacific and Central and South America anticipate increases closer to 1%. Hoteliers offer a different opinion than planners, indicating space availability is not flat in 2019 – it’s actually increasing by an expected 2.2% globally. They do acknowledge rate increases in a range similar to planners – 2.29% higher in 2019 compared to 2018. Voyager’s World | June 2019 | P14 The World of Unique Meeting Spaces!

AirAsia to venture into tours and activities VW BUREAU

irAsia believes it can be stronger Athan Klook at selling activities. The airline aims to tap into its base of over 100 million customers to sell in-destination activities and tours. Aaron Sarma, COO of AirAsia.com (and founder and CEO of Vidi), will reveal details of the strategy on stage at Arival, Asia’s only event dedicated to tours, activities and attractions, in Bangkok 26 June. Arival CEO Douglas Quinby says that AirAsia has never been timid about its plans to expand across the region into new lines of business. “With several affiliate brands serv- ing 140 destinations across Asia, the airline group has made plain its plans to become a full-service online travel agency,” notes Quinby. In the last three years or so, AirAsia has built up an offering of 15,000 ex- periences in 80 destinations served by AirAsia directly. The content comes both through contracts with operators and partnerships with online travel agencies and content aggregators. AirAsia has not been deterred by competitor Klook’s ability to raise over US$500 million in investment. “Klook has done a great job and has been very aggressive with pricing and supply,” says Sarma. “But we have a key advantage because we have this huge base of customers already en- gaged with us — more than 100 mil- lion travellers every year.” However, it’s still early days as AirA- sia builds its tour portfolio. Sarma says that AirAsia’s focus continues to be expanding direct supply con- tracts and partnerships as well as in- tegrating tours and activities into the broader AirAsia experience. Sarma, however, is clear on prior- ities. “Our mission is to convert as many of those [AirAsia] customers as possible.” AMAZINGARUNACHAL Voyager’s World | June 2019 | P22 Bhalukpong: India’s ideal picnic spot VW BUREAU

Phi Ta Khon July 5 - July 7, Thailand

Phi Ta Khon, also known as Ghost Festival, is the most common name for a group of festivals held in Dan Sai, Loei province, Isan, Thailand. The events take place over three days. This year, the festival will be celebrated from July 5 to July 7. The first day is the Ghost Festival, also called Wan Ruam (assembly day). The revelers hold a series of games and take part in a procession wearing masks made of ricehusks or coconut leaves with hats made from rice steamers, plus patchwork clothing. The origins of this part of the festival are traditionally ascribed to a story of the Vessantara Jataka in which Buddha, in one of his past lives as a prince, made a long journey and was presumed dead. The celebra- tions on his return were so raucous as to wake the dead. The second day of the festival incorporates elements of the Rocket Festival, plus costume and dance contests and more parades. On the third and final day, the villagers listen to sermons from Buddhist monks. Voyager’s World | June 2019 | P27 Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival July 12-July 21, Scotland
