Fall tour with yMusic, winter with local symphonies Pitchfork sinks their teeth into Vanessa Carlton’s Liberman “Let’s get “” out of the way. Fourteen years ago, Vanessa Carlton made a very popu- lar song that will follow her around forever. Fair enough; it’s very catchy. But times have changed. Can’t Vanessa? She recently told CBS News that she “learned a lot” since her debut album, “which is mostly that you don’t know anything.” That’s as good a place as any to reset, which she does with the refresh- ingly raw Liberman. Like the bulk of her recordings, it’s still comprised of her honeysuckle voice and piano licks, but Liber- man (so named after Carlton’s grandfather, one of whose paintings of nudes hangs in her home and served, she says, as a sort of inspiration) either lets those components stand alone or accentuates them with mild indulgences, like blunted brass or hand claps. The bare songwriting is not something you would identify as avant-garde, but Carlton’s inclinations are a lot weirder than they used to be. Take the album cover, which with its thick white border and bold black type resembles a Gentlewoman maga- zine cover. This isn’t quite an album of Swiss design-inspired art jams, but maybe it’s her version. The single “Operator” has Carlton using the huskiness of her voice to sound threatening in a way that makes you wonder what a truly severe Vanessa Carlton album might sound like. Still, Liberman is excellent on its own. Carlton’s very pretty voice is the key attraction on songs that register between low-key pop, rock, and folk. Early single “Blue Pool”, for example, touches on each in a way that feels refreshingly old school, as though pop radio these days was comprised of and the Mamas and the Papas. The song’s latter third is given over entirely to arpeggiating keyboard runs in a way you don’t notice at first, because it’s so atmospheric and catchy. But it’s also odd—is this a sketch of a song? An extended outro? What is it doing here? The album is pockmarked with quirky decisions like this and it’s better for it. Were Liberman the creation of a heretofore-unknown artist, it’s difficult to imagine an album of such earnestness generating the kind of pre-release interest that would deem it worthy of CBS News. But that’s the pickle of early success. The flipside is that it’s also harder to imagine fans of punkier singer-songwriters like Angel Olsen or Tobias Jesso Jr. embracing her. She should share a stage with Perfume Genius. They both have beautiful voices and something to say. For Carlton, that message is a simple, almost sisterly, “You got this.” “That’s the way it is, love,” she sings on “House of Seven Swords”, breaking the fourth wall with some mild real talk. This is the person I want to hear tell me “shit happens”; the confidence in her voice is very reassuring. Perhaps that is the source of some of Carlton’s magic, that she herself is delivering the shaman’s prayer she sings about on album opener “Take It Easy”. “When heaven wraps around you/ And she will/ Take it easy”. Don’t mind if I do.” - Pitchfork, 10/21/15. Rating: 7.8/10 Glide Magazine is impressed with the new Darlingside album “Just when you thought that all the alt-folk bands had settled into a similar and comfortable sound, along comes Darlingside to shake things up. Birds Say is the band’s second full-length release and it is built around the quartet’s gorgeous vocals and innovative use of string instruments. On the 13 tracks here Darlingside continues to expand its adventurous approach toward music making, merging traditional music, classical arrange- ments, and even a touch of indie rock. The members of Darlingside – bassist Dave Senft, guitarist and banjo player Don Mitchell, classical violinist and mandolin player Auyon Mukharji, and cellist and guitarist Harris Paseltiner – first met when they were students at Williams College in Massachusetts. The band released its first full-length album, Pilot Machines, in 2012. Last year they teamed up with singer-songwriter Heather Maloney and followed up with the EP Woodstock. Fans of Pilot Machines will notice the group have made some changes: they no longer have a drummer, which means the use of percussion on “Birds Say” is kept to a minimum and where the group’s previous work was built around a single vocalist their clear, high vocals are now joined together. The result, especially on songs like the title track, is quite stunning. That’s right – there is no front man in this band, and when they perform all four members sing into one microphone. And it is more than their combined voices that the group blend together as the band write their songs collectively, each member contributing to their compositions. You can hear a strong 1960s influence on some of this material including “Do You Ever Live?,” a song that begins with piano introduction than follows with the kind of lush harmonies that we haven’t heard since the Beach Boys ruled the radio waves. The song even has a slightly psy- chedelic feels as does “Volcano Sky.” Another standout is “Harrison Ford,” which isn’t actually about the actor but is about attending a meeting with a man that looks like Harrison Ford. Darlingside gets to show off their sense of humor on this off-kilter pop song that builds around an odd percussive tape loop and also features frantic banjo, some subtle piano and a brief cello interlude. “Yes we will leave here without a trace/Take a new name and an old shape/But I’ll be no outlaw, no renegade/Just your faithful god of loss,” sings the band on “The God of Loss,” an airy atmospheric song that benefits from Mukharji’s mournful violin. This song, like the instantly hum- mable “Go Back,” deal with the need to look back before moving forward, a theme that obviously resonates with these young musicians. And as they have proven with “Birds Say,” Darlingside is a band clearly interested in moving its sound forward. They have crafted a collection of songs that you’ll find yourself going back to again and again, discovering something new with each listen.” - Glide Magazine, 10/7/15, Rating: 8/10 Catch Elliot Moss on tour this fall * = w/COIN and Colony House 10/28 Madison WI+ + = w/Wild Child 10/29 Minneapolis MN+ 10/30 Chicago IL+ 10/21 San Diego CA* 10/31 Ann Arbor MI+ 10/22 Tucson AZ* 11/1 Columbus OH_+ 10/23 Phoenix AZ* 11/3 Toronto ONT+ 10/25 Denver CO* 11/4 Montreal QUE+ 10/27 Kansas City MO* 11/5 New York NY+ RIGHT ARM RESOURCE WEEKLY UPDATE - 10/21/2015
