Back to Mass – Alleluia! As you have probably heard, DC is now in Phase II of re- opening. This means we are finally able to gather in-person for Mass again. Our first weekend public Masses will be held June 27-28. We will celebrate our parish feast – the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul – at all Masses this weekend.

Information on new Mass attendance guidelines and videos explaining new proce- dures are available at http://saintpetersdc.org/back2mass

What You Need to Know Before Coming to Mass

Mass Obligation Dispensed The dispensation from the Sunday and Holy Day obligation remains in effect. You may have to make the difficult decision to remain at home even as we of- fer public Masses. Those who should stay at home include: those with COVID-19 or exposure to it, those with upper respiratory or flu-like symptoms or underlying medi- cal conditions, the sick, the elderly, those who are living with or in the presence of any individual at risk, or those who still do not feel comfortable being in a public set- ting. When in doubt, out of charity for others, please stay home.

Mass will be live-streamed at 9:00am on Sundays at www.facebook.com/ SaintPetersDC. For those who cannot participate in public Mass but desire to receive a Communion call at home, please contact the rectory.

Sign-Up for Mass Required Advance sign-up is required for all weekend Masses. Go to https://tinyurl.com/StPetersSignUp or call the rectory at 202-547-1430 and we will sign you up.

Weekday Masses have a limit of 100 attendees but do not require advance sign-up.

Face Mask Requirement Everyone (age 2+) is required to wear a face mask for the entire Mass. Please be sure that everyone in your party has a face mask. If you forget your mask, please ask an usher for an extra.

Arrival and Seating When arriving, please keep socially distanced from other households as you enter church. Allow for extra time to be seated and under- stand that attendees may not have as much choice in where they are able to sit. Please do your best to come to church early. Ushers will start seating 30 minutes before Mass begins so that lines and groups of people are avoided. Please do not congregate by the entrance before or after Mass.

Missalettes All Hymnals and Missalettes have been removed, but disposable worship aids will be available for single use at each Mass. Please take your worship aid on entering the church and dispose of it in the trash can as you leave.

Simplified Liturgy There will be a minimum number of ministers seated in the sanctuary and assisting during the Mass. Music will be provided in a subdued manner. The 5pm Saturday vigil will not have any music, the Sunday 9am, 11am and 5pm music will be led by a single cantor and or- ganist/pianist.

New Communion Route Please follow the priests’ and ushers’ instructions for receiving communion. The priests will distribute the Eucharist to one column of pews at a time. One pew at a time, each household in a column will file out of their pew and line up in front of the priest. Children who will not receive communion but who are old enough to remain quietly in their pew should do so, and not get in line for communion.

Reception of Holy Communion Those who will not receive communion should not come forward with hands crossed for a blessing; there is a blessing for everyone at the end of Mass.

When it is your time to receive, walk down the aisle and keep your mask on. Please receive the Host in your hand. Step to the side while still holding the Eucharist in one hand, carefully loosen your facial covering (or mask by an ear loop), consume the Host, and replace the facial covering.

Out of love for our brothers and sisters, and out of kind concern for the vulnerable and our priests, those who normally receive on the tongue are respectfully asked to consider receiving in the hand as a temporary measure.

Collection There will be no Offertory collection during the Mass itself. Rather, collection baskets will be placed at the doors of the church for your donations. Online Giving is another option available at https://membership.faithdirect.net/enroll/557/9

Dismissal At the end of Mass, please take a moment and wipe down the small section of the pew where you might have made contact. Wipes will be provided in each pew for your use. Once completed, the ushers will dismiss rows beginning from the back to the front of the church. Dispose of wipes and worship aids as you leave church in trash receptacles. Use all three doors to exit. Though we know everyone is happy to be reunited in worship, please do not stop to socialize in the church or on the steps outside.

Restrooms Although restrooms will be open, we ask that you refrain from using them if possible. Due to the simplified liturgy, Mass will take less than an hour. We do understand that sometimes a restroom trip is necessary. If you must use the restrooms, please follow the guidelines for their usage as posted in the restrooms.

Reporting Coronavirus If you test positive for coronavirus or develop symptoms of Covid-19 after attending Mass at St. Peter’s, you must report it to the church. Please call Pat Devenney at 202-547-1430 or email him at [email protected]. Thank you!

Please be patient with us and with each other as we work together to implement this plan. Understand that we will make any changes deemed necessary to assure the safety of those attending, while doing our best to make the sacraments available and reverent.

In Christ,

Fr. Gary

Dear St. Peter’s Family,

Happy Feast Day! Our patronal feast day occurs every year on June 29, but only every several years does it fall on a Sunday. It should have happened this year but, because of the leap year, it is on Monday. The next time June 29 falls on a Sunday is 2025.

I think we all need something to celebrate with enthusiasm as we return to public worship again, so I decided to celebrate our patronal feast at all Masses this weekend, as permitted. It’s a shame our liturgies cannot be celebrated with full choirs and a full church, but let’s not let that dim our spirit of celebration and thanksgiving.

St. Peter’s is a great blessing to many of us. These months of pandemic have helped us to realize just how dear our parish is. Our hunger for Eucharist and for gathering with friends in faith can now begin to be satisfied once more. I am so thankful to be able to be among you again. All of us, together, make a beautiful picture of Christ. That picture will not be as complete as attendance is restricted for the time being, but I fervently look forward to the day when our wor- ship will be restored to its former beauty by the presence of everyone.

In the meantime, let us be thankful and celebrate the blessings our parish enjoys and do all we can to share them.

St. Peter, pray for us! Fr Gary

Everyone Home DC (formerly, Capitol Hill Group Ministry) is a nonprofit that works with homeless and other vulnerable people in the District. St. Peter’s is one of several religious congregations that supports Everyone Home, and it is asking for our help. Normally, as the beginning of the new school year approaches, Everyone Home DC organiz- es a drive to provide students with backpacks and school supplies. Given the uncertainties surrounding the pandemic, however, no one yet knows what the coming school year will look like. And so, instead of backpacks, Everyone Home hopes to give each student it works with a $50 gift card, to help them and their families navigate this uncertain time. You can be part of the effort. Through July 5, we are collecting monetary donations, in whatever amount you wish to give, for Everyone Home DC to put toward the gift cards. If you wish to give by check, please make it out to St. Peter’s Church and write “Everyone Home DC” on the memo line. Drop checks through the mail slot in the rectory door [or place them in the collection basket at Sunday Mass]. Or you may make your donation through FaithDirect; just be sure to write “Everyone Home DC” in the notes field. Your gifts to Everyone Home DC are just the latest attempt by St. Peter’s parishioners to reach out to those who have been hit hard by the pandemic. Since late April, our parish has collected food, supplies, and money for several organiza- tions: Holy Name Parish food bank (the regular recipient of our year-round food collection) received 2 vanloads of food and $540 from St. Peter’s. McKenna Center food pantry, 1 carload of groceries and $930. Christ House meal program, 1 carload of food and $905. SOME bag-lunch program, an SUV full of food items and more than $500. Little Sisters of the Poor, Jeanne Jugan Residence, a small load of cleaning and other supplies and some $1,335. St. Peter’s is blessed in many ways, and parishioners have been generous during these difficult days. Please continue your generosity by helping Everyone Home DC.
