Is there anything you can put your finger on why the offense seems to do pretty well at certain stages and then at some point in the second half it seems to kind of stall? “Well, I think in this game the third quarter was an entirely different quarter than anybody’s played all year long with the amount of rain we had on both sides of the ball. It turned into a little bit of a rain game both ways. Then when the skies opened up a little bit we were behind and we have to throw it every down. We’re not good enough to throw it every down.”

Why does QB Colin Kaepernick seem to struggle in the second half? “Well, I think sometimes we’re down and then all of a sudden it becomes a rush game and a lot of coverage, different variations. I think when we can keep people off balance with our run and our play action we’re a lot better. And, if the game is tied, close it turns into that type of game, but when you get down like we did all of a sudden it turns into a throw every down game and we’re not built for that right now.”

What was your impression of New England Patriots QB Tom Brady and how he was able to escape some of those--? “That’s why he’s a Hall of Fame . He’s not the fastest quarterback out there, but I would argue that he’s as good as anybody when it comes to being able to move within the pocket. That’s what you saw. Again, he did today. You look at the play he made to [New England Patriots WR Malcolm] Mitchell where he avoided the rush. He’s probably a tenth of a second later [LB] Ahmad [Brooks] makes a play, but that’s when you’re playing against a great one like him. Those are the plays he’s going to make. He had to scramble, kept himself alive, and then threw the ball almost falling down to [New England Patriots WR Danny] Amendola for a touchdown. People that have watched him for his career have come to expect that from him and that’s unfortunate for us today, but that’s just the type of quarterback he is. His ability to keep plays alive, he’s as good as anybody and I think people get misconception that he’s not Mike Vick, keeps plays alive scrambling and all those other things. He’s not like that but his ability in the pocket is as good as anybody’s that’s ever played the game.”

Did you notice anything in particular with just how much time, especially early on, that it appeared he had to throw? “Well there are times that I thought we did a really good job of knocking him off his spot in there, but his ability to move and keep things alive in the pocket is really what makes him such a good quarterback.”

You guys matched a franchise record for nine consecutive losses. What do you do to keep the players enthused and into it? “Well, that’s our job. I don’t think we’re going to take our ball and go home. That’s what everybody is here to do and that’s what our deal is. I think they practice well. They’re engaged. They want to win. They’re not excited about where we are at right now in terms of where we’re at loss-wise, but we’ve got to go back to work. That’s the only thing that you can do in this situation.”

When you say you’re not a “throw every down” type team right now, what do you mean? “That’s just not what we’re built for. [WR] Torrey [Smith] wasn’t in today. We don’t have a go to wide receiver that’s going to elicit double coverage and then all of a sudden you’re going to get single matchups across the ball and then we can line up in empty sets all day long and throw the ball all over the lot. That’s just not the way we’re built right now.”

Is this becoming a lost season in any way? 1-9. “I don’t think 1-9 is a winning season.”

I mean, are you gaining things out of this? Is the team moving ahead in any form? “I think I’ve seen our players develop individually. You go along you see players as the season goes along that they’ve gotten better during the course of the year. I think you’re starting to see that. I think in some situations they had to. We were forced in a lot of situations from an injury standpoint when you lose the we lost to have to have [LB] Nick Bellore out there getting the reps that Nick is getting, but I see Nick improving. I think Nick’s played better today than he did four weeks ago. So, those are the positive things that you’re building on or watching guys develop and continue to grow as players in terms of where they’re at. So, I see that.”

The offense had kind of a tough time the first three drives. That fourth drive you got things moving. What adjustments did you make? “We didn’t really make any adjustments. We kind of knew what they were going to do coming in and it was kind of a matchup type defense in terms of who was getting on who and then we had to try to exploit that. We felt like we had to run the ball today. We really were trying to keep them off the field if we could and I think we did that with a couple of our drives and ate up some time off the clock. I think the best thing you can do with Tom is to keep him off the field, so I think we kind of extended some drives there and I think that benefited us. Try to keep it within a one score game. The differences I think we had that long drive, not sure if it was 15-14 plays, but we came away with three. You can’t match them seven for three and stay in the ball game with them. That was unfortunate. We got down in the red zone there and get knocked back on first down and second down. Those are things we can’t do against good football teams.”

When Torrey’s not out there, who becomes a guy that can--? “I thought [TE] Vance [McDonald] had a couple matchups that we liked. I think his ability at the tight end spot is really what we tried to kind of exploit a little bit there and I think you saw him a couple times. We hit him in the red zone for a touchdown. We had him on a deep crossing route late. We just missed him, but I think Vance kind of falls into that role a little bit for us.”

I know you were busy coaching football today, but did you have any interaction with former 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo? Did he come and talk to the team? “I talked to Mr. D just a little bit. No he did not talk to the team, but I talked to him.”

What’d he say? “He’s just happy to be back. He was pulling for us today. We were hoping he was going to be our good luck charm today and unfortunately I think we let him down.”

Did it affect the team that there were Patriots fans in attendance? They seemed to be really loud. “We just play. I don’t think anybody listens to … once you get on the field you just listen to the referees and the whistles and things like that. But, it wasn’t too loud or anything that effected our play on the field.”

Kaepernick was under a lot of pressure, especially early in the game. Did you see any miscommunication on the line or was it guys--? “No, I think there’s just some individual, as the game (went on), they settled down a little bit, but a couple times individual matchups early in that first couple of drives there were guys just getting beat in one-on-ones. Once we got that settled down and straightened out I think we ended up moving the ball halfway decent.”

I know you don’t want to go week-to-week with making an announcement after every game. Is Colin Kaepernick your starting quarterback for the duration here? “Yeah, unless, we’re always evaluating every week, but I don’t think Colin played poor today.”

Did you have any thoughts on the Patriots? Did they look like the same old Patriots as good as they always are? “Yeah, as long as they have number 12 and that coach over there, I think they’re going to be pretty good.”

49ers QB Colin Kaepernick Press Conference – November 20, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New England Patriots

Another week where the offense starts out strong and then tends to fold in the third quarter. What is that about? “We have to do a better job of executing. We got into a little bit of a rut. We got out of rhythm, weren’t stringing plays together like we were earlier in the game.”

Did you feel you personally got out of rhythm a little bit? “A little bit. There were some throws I wish I had back. There was a big one to [TE] Vance [McDonald] that we just missed on that could have opened up the game for us, gave us the opportunity to score. But, we have to do better as a whole, making sure we’re getting first downs and stringing plays together.”

Yeah, but it happens every third quarter. I understand today maybe things didn’t work out in the third quarter and you needed to execute better, but you can say that about nine games. So, why is it a continuing pattern? “If we knew that, we’d fix it right now. It’s something we continue to work on to make sure we’re doing everything we can to be prepared and help us win those situations.”

Head coach Chip Kelly said a little while ago that this offense or this team isn’t built to throw, throw, throw. Is that something you agree with? Is that something you can understand that this team isn’t built to do that? “Yeah. Most football teams, you have to have balance. There’s very few teams that can throw the ball on every down and be successful. This offense is built on being balanced and having a run game to support it as well.”

What about their defense? Are there any specific things, problems they presented for you guys? Are they the same old Patriots or did they change things up on you guys? “They’re a good football team. There wasn’t anything that they caught us off guard with or anything of that nature. Ultimately, it came down to our execution and being able to make plays in clutch situations.”

Early in the game, it seemed like they were bringing more guys than you guys had in to block. What can you do to take advantage of those situations? “There’s a lot of one on one matchups in those situations. Those are things we have to be able to take advantage of and win those matchups.”

As one of the leaders of the team, do you worry that losing is becoming too easy for you guys to accept? “No. I think this team is continuing to fight. Trying to figure out how to fix our problems and make sure we go out and compete every week and try to get a win.”

Were you surprised by the number of Patriots fans today? “I really hadn’t thought about it, but there were a lot out there.”

Does that impact you guys at all, momentum-wise or anything? “We got out and play football. It doesn’t matter if we’re home, away, how many fans there are. We’re going to go out, do everything we can to win.”

Did you have any interaction with New England Patriots QB Tom Brady after the game at all? “I did not.”

How much did the conditions affect your throwing did you feel like? “There was one point where it was coming down pretty good. The ball got a little bit slick. So, we had to rely on the run game a little bit more. Once things started to clear up, we got more back into our rhythm and got things rolling.”

With WR Torrey Smith out, how did that change the offense? “He’s a great deep threat for us. Solid player. Defenses have to respect him. With [WR Aaron Burbridge] Burb coming in, he’s a great player as well. It wasn’t something that we changed the offense to compensate for that. We had another player that was ready to go.”

I know you’re not playing against him, but do you find yourself watching Brady? He made just a couple instinctual plays it seemed like out there today. “Yeah. He’s a great quarterback. He had a few plays that most can’t make. Those are things that you do look at as a quarterback and see, is that something that I can incorporate into my game?”

49ers S Antoine Bethea Postgame Quotes – November 20, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New England Patriots

What’s the feeling when you almost hit New England Patriots QB Tom Brady, he extends the play, he’s just a couple tenths of a second away from getting hit. “It’s tough. When you can extend plays like that, it’s definitely tough on the back end when the receivers are scrambling around. Got to make plays.”

It was 13-10 in the fourth quarter. Is that just a case of it being too tough to keep a guy like Brady and that Patriots offense down? “No, I’m not going to say that. Like you say, it was 13-10.”

I’m sure these losses are equally frustrating, but when it piles up to nine--? “It’s frustrating. Like I said, we don’t come in to work every week to come out here and lose. It gets frustrating regardless of how many losses it is. When you come in to work and put the time in that we put in, the coaches that put in and we come out here and play a decent game in the first half and continue to get the outcome that we get, it gets frustrating regardless of how many it is. It is frustrating.”

Are you afraid of losing guys as the losses pile up? “No, I’m not afraid of that. If that were the case, we would have lost some guys. But, continuously, week in and week out, come Tuesday, or even tomorrow, guys will be in the weight room working out. Come Tuesday, guys are in the meeting room paying attention, out there running around, flying around, so I’m not afraid of that. I don’t think we have that those types of guys in the locker room.”

Can you speak to the escapability of QB Tom Brady? “He’s been doing it for a long time. He has great awareness in the pocket. And, like I say, he’s a future Hall of Famer. He did a great job today.”

49ers LB Ahmad Brooks Postgame Quotes – November 20, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New England Patriots

Today was a big deal, because all of these very famous 49ers were here, Super Bowl guys and your team is in an entirely different situation. Does it make you think about things or even make you sad, the comparison? “No not necessarily because it is a new era, a new day in age, times have changed, football has changed, it has revolutionized.”

You guys were really close several times to getting New England Patriots QB Tom Brady and just at the last second he would escape and throw a good pass. Did you feel that throughout the game that it was a matter of inches on some of those plays? “Yes. Well, me being a pass rusher, I was trying to get to him the best way that I could. I had to remember that he is a pocket passer. He is pretty good in the pocket. He likes to step in the B gaps. Our main thing going into this week was to get him off of his spot, which we did at times. He is Tom Brady so he is going to make the plays he needs to make and he did so today.”

Did you realize early on how one dimensional that passing attack was with him and New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman? “Yes. We emphasized all this week him liking to go 8 to 12 yards of throwing the ball to the hashes whether it was to [New England Patriots TEs Rob] Gronkowski, [Martellus] Bennett, or number [New England Patriots WR Danny Amendola] 80 or [New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman] 11, but he was getting the ball off really fast and it was Tom Brady.”

Do you guys cringe at the nine game losing streak, and how do you guys try to get past it? “The best thing for us to do is to try to get a win. A win heals all wounds. If we can get a win next week, we will feel better about ourselves in the locker room.”

49ers K Phil Dawson Postgame Quotes – November 20, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New England Patriots

How were the conditions out there? “It got pretty tough there for a while. At first it was just a nuisance. The field was fine. The balls weren’t getting that water-logged. Then it just kind of picked up in the second and third quarters. I’ve got to hand it to our field guys. The field held up really well. But, obviously, the balls were water-logged. Everything was just messy. It was a challenging day. Both teams had to play in it. I think there were no turnovers, that’s pretty impressive.”

Where is that ball now and where are you going to keep it? “I don’t know where the ball is right now, but we’ll find a special place for it when it’s all said and done.”

What does that [accomplishment] mean to you? “I said in a team game it’s hard to feel good about individual accomplishments. Probably when it’s all said and done and I’m no longer a member of the team I’ll enjoy it a little more. My focus today was not on the 400 [points] but trying to help this team win the game and we came up short in that area.”

A lot of guys came up to you as you were coming off the field. What does that mean and were you surprised by that? “Well, I’ve always tried to be just one of the guys on the team. I never wanted to be the weird kicker that did his own thing. To have that kind of reception means a lot to me given my efforts through the years. I try to be a football player and just go kick the ball on fourth down, so I’ll remember that for a long time.”

I think you’re neck and neck with [Raiders K] Janikowski in career field goals. Do you know him at all? “Just playing against him. Obviously he’s doing great and climbing the charts himself. It’s nice to have a little active competition.”

Chip Kelly talks about how you’re the consummate professional. You know when the winds pick up at different stadiums. Do you keep a log of that? How do you remember everything? “I do keep a log. I have ever since my days in Cleveland. I just feel like that’s my opponent. While I do have things I need to know about my physical opponent, on game days, it’s really the conditions of the day. When these guys are in meetings studying offense and defense and when my little special teams meeting is over, I come in and study the forecast and refer to my notebook. What does the wind do in this stadium, what’s the footing like, what are the sight lines, all that kind of stuff. Some of it is just my personality. I don’t like any surprises, so if I can feel prepared going in to an environment that helps me just relax so I can do my thing.”

49ers RB Shaun Draughn Postgame Quotes – November 20, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New England Patriots

What was the idea to go out and attack the defense? We saw so many different players getting involved early on, especially you. We hadn’t seen you touch the ball for two games before this one. “Yeah, I think each week is different. We have to get better at what we’re already running and throw in some wrinkles here and there.”

You were clicking with San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick today. What were you guys seeing? “This is something we work on in practice. It’s good to see it actually working in the game. It’s a good payoff when we you see it work, especially if you practice it that much.”

What’s the biggest difference for this team between the first and second half? “It’s hard to win in this league against any team. When you’re playing yourself and the other team, it’s hard to win, especially with penalties. We shot ourselves in the foot, hard to win.”

49ers WR Chris Harper Postgame Quotes – November 20, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New England Patriots

Was it a little bittersweet for you getting your first catch of the season against your former team, but the result for the 49ers isn’t what you wanted? “It’s definitely bittersweet, but you know we’ve got to keep going back to practice, working as hard as we can and get the team as ready as we can for the next game.”

You played this defense pretty well and it’s a defense that’s been struggling. It seems like the offense in the first half certainly found a lot of holes finding different players. What was the basic game plan against the Patriots secondary? “To win, obviously, but that didn’t happen. We played as hard as we could and it didn’t turn out the way we wanted it to.”

I think the one theme for this offense though is that in these losses, the team has been close at the half. The offense played so well the first two quarters but in the third and fourth quarters it’s been difficult for this offense. Anything you can pinpoint? What is the big turnaround? “We just need to finish. I think just all the main things in football: converting third downs, catching the football, just making plays. I think we need to get back to more of that, making plays, and doing our job the best that we can.”

Your third down catch was the first third down conversion for the 49ers in the second half. Are those the kind of plays you’re talking about? “Correct. We need to make more plays like that. Whenever the ball is thrown to you, you’ve got to finish. I messed up an opportunity I had last game against Arizona. I had dropped a ball that was thrown to me. I just told myself ‘I need to make up for it, especially against this team.’”

49ers RB Carlos Hyde Postgame Quotes – November 20, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New England Patriots

The team was in it at the half and had a great first half, but in the third quarter once again the offense just sort of sputtered. Can you pinpoint why it’s so hard for the offense to come out and get started? “Make plays. At the end of the day, that’s what’s it’s all about. Offensive skill guys, we have to make plays. We have to keep drives going. Definitely playing against [New England Patriots QB] Tom Brady, any quarterback of his caliber, you have to extend the drive. You can’t go three-and-out. If you give him the ball too many times, your chances are slim to win. We just have to make plays.”

How do you process losing nine straight games? “Yeah, it sucks but it’s my job and it’s everybody’s job in this locker room. Every Sunday we need to come out and fight. No matter what our record is, no matter what the score is, we’ve got to fight and not give up just because the score gets out of reach. Keep fighting. That means in 60 minutes of football, anything can happen. Just keep playing hard and things might fall your way. Next thing you know we’ll have a win.”

It seems like you had a really good second effort on your carries today. Did your shoulder feel better today or was there something? “No, it’s just last week I wasn’t attacking the line. This whole week my mindsight was to attack. When I’m attacking, I’m extending the drive for us and picking up yards for us.”

When you start attacking does the vision get better for you? “I would say that. As the game goes on, it gets easier and I know where I need to go with the ball.”

You guys now head to Miami and then have an extended stay in Orlando before the game. What’s the team’s feel about that? “My feel is get ready for the Dolphins. Get ready for another fight. We still have games to play. No matter what our record is, I’m looking forward to the Dolphins. Put this loss in the past and get ready for the Dolphins.”

San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly said a few minutes ago that you really weren’t built to be a throw every down team. With San Francisco 49ers WR Torrey Smith out today, was the game plan pretty run heavy? Was that the idea to establish yourselves in the ground game? “Every week we want to run the ball. Especially when you’re playing quarterbacks like Tom Brady, you want to get your run game going. You want to keep him off the field, minimize the defense on the field, and extend our drives. Yeah, you want to run the ball. Eat that clock off and score points.”

49ers TE Vance McDonald Postgame Quotes – November 20, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New England Patriots

Do you guys feel like you are this close from getting to the next level? “Yes. Especially coming off of last week and coming in at halftime. Yes, you feel like you are in it. You are in a weird game. You barely see rain. It is we are that close and on so many levels, special teams, defense and offense.”

At halftime just down three points, this team is in it. You played great the first two quarters and the third quarter starts and its five straight punts and three straight three-and-outs. What is the difference in this offense between the first and second half? Is there anything that you can pinpoint? “It is tough to do that without having another look at it. We come in and [San Francisco 49ers Head Coach] Chip [Kelly] said it and he is right. It is the extra strain. It is all eleven guys, whether it is straining up front and giving [San Francisco 49ers QB Colin] Kaepernick one more hitch for his delivery, or a receiver one more strain in to get that much more separation. It is tough because you are so close. So it is frustrating, but we will get there.”

Is it sort of mystifying a little bit? “I don’t think so, not internally. Chip has done a great job. We are never chasing ghosts or anything statistic-wise. It is one thing whether it is the turnover battle, managing the ball, taking care of yourself in the redzone. Tonight, it really is a game and in the third quarter. We went three-and-outs on offense and [New England Patriots QB] Tom [Brady] does what he does.”

Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick Press Conference – November 20, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New England Patriots

Opening comments: “Well I thought it was a solid effort by our team. It’s always good to not turn the ball over. We had some good field position opportunities. Offensively, through the kicking game and some defensive stops, and took advantage of those and made some big plays on offense in the fourth quarter. We needed those. I thought [New England Patriots QB] Tom [Brady] made a great play on the touchdown, [New England Patriots WR] Danny [Amendola] coming off the pressure and just finding the back of the end zone. It was a tremendous play. But, overall I thought we played hard. You know, it was a tough week after the Seattle game coming out here, but I thought the players showed a lot of commitment all week to come in and prepare, and come out here and play with good energy. The 49ers present a lot of problems. I thought they, you know they’re, they give you a lot of things you’ve got to deal with offensively. Defensively, a lot of guys close to the line of scrimmage we had to deal with, and they’re always good in the kicking game. So, you know it was a tough day today, but I thought our guys hung in there and battled well. It’s good to have eight wins.”

How about the reception for Tom and of course the way he came out and played? He had you know, four touchdowns, almost 300 yards passing. “Yeah, I mean we did a good job. Offensively, moved the ball. Had plays from our skill players. Ran the ball well, had good balance, Tom played well. I mean, it’s a good offensive performance.”

Tom’s ability to extend plays, how much of that is instinct and how much of that is just what he’s been working on? “I don’t know, you’d probably have to ask him that. Probably a little bit of both. I don’t know.”

His ability today to extend plays seemed--? “Yeah, I mean we’ve seen him do that before. That’s what good quarterbacks do. They have good vision, they know when they don’t have it, and receivers did a good job of finding space. Tom did a good job of finding them, and the protection did a good job of giving him enough time to get his eyes down field and you know, find a secondary target. So, you know it was a team execution.”

How impressed were you with the way you guys came at San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick? You know, four different guys with sacks in the first half and five overall to get pressure on him. “Yeah, he’s a tough guy to tackle. You know, he’s fast, illusive. So, you know our players stayed after him, and I thought [New England Patriots Defensive Coordinator] Matt [Patricia] had a couple good edge pressure blitzes where we had some three guys off the edge. But, you know he’s, Colin’s a hard guy to tackle, and you know we got him a few times, we didn’t get him a few times, and that’s about the way it’s going to be with him. He’s going to break some tackles and get away from time to time.”

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell had a big day, most notably the 21-yard catch on the 3rd and 9, and the scoring drive, and then of course later the touchdown reception. Given the fact that you were down a receiver without New England Patriots WR Chris Hogan, what are the things that you saw in Malcolm that led you to believe that this guy could cease an opportunity like this? “Yeah, it was great for him to step up and take advantage of this opportunity. We really needed that without Chris, but I thought all the receivers did, [New England Patriots WR] Julian [Edelman], Danny and Malcolm. You know, Malcolm made some big catches over the middle as you mentioned, the in cut, he had a good slant route, and then kind of the scramble. You know, and the over the big catch and run play concept. I thought maybe the best play he had was just from the sideline was the blocking he did on [New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount] LG’s long run in the first quarter. That took up, you know it was like a 20-yard gain and it ended up being a 40-yard gain or something like that, but it was. Malcolm competed hard. He always works hard. He’s a smart kid. He got an opportunity today, and he certainly stepped up and took advantage of it. So, that’s what our team needed. We had a lot of guys do that really. We have guys on both sides of the ball, and the kicking game. You know, after [New England Patriots WR Matthew Slater] Slate went out those guys had to step into some roles, but they performed well. You know, we needed that.”

It’s too early after the game to know the severity on Slater? “Oh yeah, sure. We’ll be there Wednesday after practice. You’ll be the first one to get it.”

Speaking of injuries, what do you think of New England Patriots RB Dion Lewis and just his work coming back? “Dion’s worked hard. He had an opportunity to play today. Just some, I don’t know we’ll see what it looks like on film. I thought he helped us. I think he’ll hopefully keep getting better as he gets more game experience and timing. And you know, as much as we practice it’s different in the game, but I thought he handled himself well. He got off to a decent start today. He gave us a little bit of work.”

What have you seen from Malcolm Mitchell and his ability to make plays after the catch? “He’s done a little bit of that, you know forced through the year. I mean, you know he runs hard, he gets up field, and he did that today. So, it’s good. I mean, that’s what a receiver should do, catch the ball, get up field.”

The end of the second quarter, it seemed like you were balancing with the conditions, trying to not be careless with the ball, but almost not be aggressive as maybe you would be with that much time on the clock. I’m curious, what was the mindset as to how you guys approached that drive at the end of the second quarter? “Yeah well, number one we didn’t want to give the ball back. We were backed up to start the drive, and we got it out of there on a draw play to Dion. I think it was Dion, yeah picked up the first down. So, we’d already used a couple timeouts, unfortunately. So, we were down a little bit there, but we were trying to get it into field goal range. And, just kind of felt like the 56 – 57 yard kick there at the end was, we were hoping to get a little more on the play before, and we did. You know, Tom took the sack on first down or whatever it was, so that kind of just you know, we couldn’t get close enough. We just didn’t want to take a shot at a Hail Mary at the end, and he got pressure and just dropped it off to [New England Patriots RB] James [White]. So, most important thing was not to give them the ball back, not to give away points, especially if we were getting the ball coming out of the third quarter. I mean, that’s kind of what happened last year in the Philadelphia game, we couldn’t make a first down and we punted, and it’s a bad series.”

New England Patriots LB Dont’a Hightower came out in the third and fourth defensive drives, was that performance, managing snaps? “Yeah, we played a lot of people on defense. So, Dont’a’s one of our best players.”

Tom threw a lot of passes in the third quarter, several more than in the first half, was this a day with the conditions maybe it was easier to throw the ball, than run the ball, because of the footing and things of that nature? “I don’t know about that. I mean, it wasn’t a great day to throw the ball. I’d say that you know, San Francisco did a good job coming down and crowding the line of scrimmage, and they had a safety in a box, they had us outnumbered almost every play. When we came in to try and crack a safety they brought a corner in on top of it, so we were always one short. It was you know, some tough sledding in there. Took two and three yard runs, so we had some good one-on-one opportunities. We had some opportunities to get the ball in space. You know, they had tight coverage. We hit some, we didn’t hit some, but I’d say it was a bit of a combination of those two things. You know, it was hard to just run the ball against the eight to nine man fronts that they were presenting, and their safeties did a good job, [San Francisco 49ers S Antoine] Bethea and [San Francisco 49ers S Eric] Reid, and the corners. I know, [San Francisco 49ers CB Tramaine] Brock did a good job coming in there. We cracked the safety and then Brock would come in right behind them, and so it was just a lot of guys standing there at the line of scrimmage.”

You used New England Patriots LB Kyle Van Noy for the first time on defense. Did you get a feel for what he was able to provide you? “Yeah, it looked like he helped us a little bit. We’ll see how it goes on the film, but he has some versatility for us, can rush, cover, you know pretty in shape. But, it’s kind of [New England Patriots LB] Shea’s [McClellin] first playing time off the line of scrimmage. So, both those guys, he gave us a lot of snaps, you know I think there were some things that were OK, I’m sure there are some things that we can improve on. We’ll see how that looks, but it was a good animal that was in there. We used [New England Patriots LB] Elandon [Roberts] I mean, we had some playable linebackers.”

Defense seemed a little better in the second half, just from a layman’s eyes. Is there anything that goes into that? Anything that you've noticed on the defense being slow or anything? “No. They had a good drive there, I think maybe their third drive. They had us on a couple over routes or return route. They came out and we made some, tried to change some things up in the third quarter. But, we had a couple good negative plays. Like any offense, hope to get a team in third and long, or that’s first and long, or second down or first down to second and long, or second down to third and long. It’s a lot easier to play defense on third-and-10 than it is on third-and-3. I don't know how many of those situations we were in, but it seemed like we were in quite a few defensively. So, that’s always good.”

Can you feel the Patriot fan presence in a situation like this during the game, after the game, and what is your thoughts on that? “Yeah, I definitely felt the Patriots fans out there before the game, when we scored, when we made good plays, and after the game. Yeah, looks like we travel well.”

Patriots QB Tom Brady Press Conference – November 20, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New England Patriots

On the final touchdown pass to New England Patriots WR Malcom Mitchell you kept the play alive sort of running forward. Can you go through that? “Yeah, it was a third down pass and he was short of the sticks so I scrambled up, he wheeled and I just saw a little separation and just tried to give him a chance. He made a great play and that was a phenomenal play by Malcolm. We really needed it. It was tough conditions out there. We hung in there, bought it out and grinded it out pretty good.”

On the touchdown to New England Patriots WR Danny Amendola, what did you see on that? “We had a little different coverage than we wanted and we bought a little bit more time. Danny made a great play finding some space and I just kind of put it up there for him. It was a great play by Danny.”

Can you talk about playing here at home for the first time and what the reception was? It was mostly Tom Brady fans in the stands it seemed. “Yeah I’ve got a lot of people out there waiting for me so it’s very cool. It doesn’t get any better than that. For the first chance to ever do that it was very special. I felt it in pregame warmup and it carried right to the last play of the game. It was pretty great. They’ve got a great organization, they always have and it inspired a lot of kids here in the Bay Area in my time growing up and I was one of them. To see [former NFL FB and current 49ers running backs coach] Tom Rathman before the game, I mean I idolized him. [Former NFL WR] Dwight Clark and [former NFL QB] Joe Montana, to see them at halftime it was a pretty, pretty great day for me.”

Did you get to speak to any of those guys or Eddie DeBartolo Jr.? “I didn’t see Mr. DeBartolo a lot. I didn’t know him really well. But I did come across a few other guys over the years and I’ve always loved the team and the organization until 2000 when I loved another team and organization but that’s just the way it goes.”

Did you talk to Tom Rathman? “I did. He was neighbors with my best friend and I got to know him a little bit before the draft and he had just started in coaching. I always loved the way that he played and how he spiked the ball after he scored. He was one of my favorite players. He autographed my shoe at a store opening and I was probably 12 or 13. He and [former NFL RB] Roger Craig. It was a pretty great memory.”

With the conditions today was it almost easier to pass than run the ball? It seemed like you kind of put the ball in your hands in the second half. “It was tough conditions. I would prefer 72 and sunny, that’s what you expect when you come to the Bay Area. We haven’t had rain in a long time but I’m glad. We need rain out here, that’s what my parents said so I’m very glad about that.”

Does Malcolm Mitchell bring a degree of toughness and is it good to see a young player as he’s just starting to get his feet wet? “Yeah he does. He shows up every day with his hard hat on ready to go to work. I’ve just been impressed with him since the day he came in and just his personality’s infectious. He’s a very positive person and he made a great play today, made a lot of great plays. He’s growing along with everybody else. It’s been really great to see.”

Have you ever had a game with more of these extending plays? Are you watching film with [former NFL QB] Brett Favre on how to extend plays to score touchdowns? “Well I’m trying not to do that, truthfully. I think they were pretty good in coverage today so I think they took away some of those early reads and then held onto it. There’s a lot of opportunities to be made when you do that because our guys can spring free with their quickness. We make a lot of those plays.”

How much of those plays is training or instinct? “I think you have to have confidence if you’re going to be able to do it. I think you just train as hard as you can and you’ve got to train the right way. I feel like I’m trying to work on some things and I think we’ve got great protection for the whole season since I’ve been in here. Our guys have really been playing great up front. You prefer to play just to play up like you would hope and when it doesn’t you’ve got to make improvisational ones and our guys made some really great plays today.”

There were a few times where you slid up and a couple times where you slid back. How much of that part is sort of feel rather than something you know of why you did it? “There’s a lot of time, like on the touchdown pass to Malcolm someone said you got hit on that but I don’t remember that. I just throw it and I’ll see it on film the next day.”

What adjustments did you have to make? In the first half you started off pretty fast and then it slowed down and then it picked back up in the second half. Or was it just the rain issue? “We had good field position to start the game and two drives where we go it in. We had great field position and took advantage of it. We had some penalties that got us off track and they played some good defense. I wish we’d score every time, but they made it tough too.”

Patriots WR Danny Amendola Postgame Quotes – November 20, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New England Patriots

What did you do well today that you are happy about? “I felt like we had some good plays on special teams. We moved the ball well in the second half. We started fast in the first quarter then we played well enough to win the game. ”

[New England Patriots QB Tom] Brady had the ability to move out of the pocket and extend the play. He continues to make things happen and made some good plays for you in that regard? “He is a great football player. He is playing really well. We all love playing for him and he is our leader.”

On the touchdown you scored, you see him moving like that, you just go to an area and then it is just all about the trust? “It depends on what coverage they are playing and we work on that drill every week. He started scrambling and we all find a zone and try to get open.”

In that second quarter, how much of it was you guys struggling or them playing well on defense? “They are a good football team. They were flying around and they were ready to play today. We came in the second half and made some adjustments and started moving the ball around.”

What was the big difference in the second half? Why did you flip the switch? “We just started connecting a little bit more. I have to look at film obviously, but we are happy. We played well enough to win the game and we are happy.”

Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount Postgame Quotes – November 20, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New England Patriots

You scored a lot of points, but it took a while for that to happen today. “You’re not going to put up points every play you make. Every time you run a play you’re not going to score. It takes drive, it takes consistency. That’s what we continue to do. We stay consistent and we stuck to the game plan. We drove the ball down the field, and we got the points.”

Do you have to remind yourselves collectively to just keep going at it? “Our mindset is to continue to do what we have to do to put points on the board and win games.”

New England Patriots RB Dion Lewis came back into the lineup. With the work that he has put in, you must have felt happy for him out there. “I am. I was excited about him being out there. I love him to death. Our group is probably one of the most close-knit groups on the team, and we’re always going to have each other’s back. We don’t care about anything personally when it comes to this game. We just want to win games and show each other support. Every time he’s out there I’m easily his number one fan.”

You, Dion and New England Patriots FB James Develin are all somewhat different. It’s a different dimension that Dion brings, isn’t it? “Definitely. We have a lot of different running backs with a lot of different styles than can do a lot of different things well. We just try our best to utilize everything that we have and put ourselves in position to be successful.”

Patriots WR Julian Edelman Postgame Quotes – November 20, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New England Patriots

Was it appropriate that you were able to go down on that first drive and score? “It was a pretty cool experience. I don’t know if the word is ‘appropriate,’ but it worked out the way that you’d hope. That’s something that you dream about. Being from here and coming back to play the 49ers with Tom Brady and scoring a touchdown on the opening drive in a rain storm is cool.”

What opened things up in the fourth quarter after going scoreless in the third quarter? “We had a couple of penalties and they were holding the ball. Anytime you put yourself in negative situations, it gets you off a rhythm and gets you out of sync and off track. It’s tough to overcome a 2nd or 3rd-and-20. I don’t think we had the ball that long in the third quarter. That’s how those go.”

Did it feel like a home game out there for you guys? “Definitely. It’s pretty crazy. Anytime we come out west it seems like we have a lot of fans out here. It’s pretty amazing to see, and it’s exciting being in your hometown area and seeing some of the greats that you watched growing up here. It was a fun experience.”

Was that first drive pretty exciting for you? “Anytime you get to go out and open a drive with a score is good for the offense. We were able to execute. It was rainy, so we were able to overcome those elements for that drive and start fast. Those are always things you try to do.”

What was it like coming back home? “It was exciting. I grew up watching this team. I was a huge fan. I still like to see them do well, just not when they play us. It was a great experience.”

Patriots RB Dion Lewis Postgame Quotes – November 20, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New England Patriots

Did you feel like you didn’t miss a beat when you got in there? “It felt good. It was great to be out there playing with my teammates. I had a good time. It was like riding a bike. I’ve been playing this game for a long time.”

What did the moment feel like for you? It’s been over a year since you’ve been on the field. “I didn’t really think about it that way. I was just thinking about going out there, trying to execute and making sure I didn’t make mistakes. I didn’t really think about it being my first game in a year. I was just ready to go.”

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady made a lot of plays in the pocket and making things happen in a lot of key moments using his legs first. “He made a lot of clutch plays scrambling and giving guys time to get open. That’s a great part of his game that nobody really thinks that he has.”

For you, were things as smooth as you expected? “You just have to get used to playing the game. My body feels good. I felt the same as I’ve always felt. I just have to get back in a rhythm. The more reps that I get, the more comfortable that I’ll be.”

What was it like taking the first hit after a knee injury? “It felt good. I don’t really think about getting hit or not getting hit. I was just ready to go. Football is normal. It’s going out there and playing football. I’m healthy now, so there’s nothing to think about anymore.”

How challenging was the past year between everything you’ve been through? “It’s challenging, but it can make you or break you. I’ve been through a lot of worse stuff than this. I’ve been through a lot worse than not being able to play and being hurt. The things that I’ve been through in my life prepare me for this moment, and I always push through.”

Patriots DB Devin McCourty Postgame Quotes – November 20, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New England Patriots

Did you feed off the energy from some of those plays early on? “You’ve got to make plays. We came out early with energy. It doesn’t matter what kind of energy you come out with during the pregame and the kickoff. You’ve got to go out there and make plays. Guys stepped up and they made plays. We got off the field. I think you can build off that. When we have success defensively, I think it just adds momentum. Every part of the game is like that. You’ve got to keep doing good things to keep the energy level high. No matter what this team always plays hard. We keep playing hard. We understand that if we keep making those good plays with high energy, we will be able to get off the field.”

Would you call this a bounce back game for the defense? “It was another performance to go out there and get better. I think last week we showed things we obviously needed to work on. Need to work on fast if we want to continue to win. We did some of those things well today. It doesn’t matter if we don’t come back next week and put in the work and do the same thing next Sunday. I think being here and being a veteran guy, you understand how much week by week you have to put in especially defensively. We do different things every week. No game plan and no game is really the same for us. The amount of work that goes in starting next Tuesday and getting ahead really matters.”

Are you encouraged by the response of the guys on defense to what needed to be done and how it translated? “I have always been encouraged by this team. We have continued to put in the work. You have to believe if you are doing the right thing, you know it will turn around. You will have good games, and you will continue to work and get better at the things you need. I was never down or out about this team. I knew we have the players to do it and continue to work at it to get it done.”

Patriots CB Logan Ryan Postgame Quotes – November 20, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New England Patriots

You guys tried some new things maybe today to try to get to the quarterback? Or maybe am I seeing things? Maybe you were a little more aggressive today? “I think our mentality is to come out here and execute. I think we executed well. I think our pass rush was great. The coverage was married up with that. I think a lot of the guys took the challenge that was brought upon us and played this offense pretty well. It wasn’t perfect. I think guys went out there and tried to go get this win.”

Do you think this is a good start back from the game you just had? “We are trying to get wins. Next week is going to be a new start for us, as well. Last week’s win or loss doesn’t carry over to this week. Everything is a new opportunity and new opponents. There are new matchups that we know. There’s a lot of skill on every team. We just have to take the challenge and embrace it and go out there and play for each other.”

What kind of difference does it make when you have a good pass rush? I think you guys had five sacks in the first half, a couple turnovers or at least they put the ball on the ground and they recovered them. To finally to get some of that feeling and that positivity going to where you can sort of build off those plays? “We fed off each other. They rushed great. We loved that. And that helped us out a ton. I think the coverage was pretty good, as well. It was tough just trying to shadow those receivers in that messy weather. It was a messy, rainy game, and you need good defense in games like this. ”
