Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents/Carers

It has been a very special week at Campion. On Monday we had a wonderful Remembrance service in the Sports Hall involving the whole school. It was very poignant to witness all our young people being so reverent and respectful.

On Wednesday we took part in the Catholic Partnership Performing Arts event at Bishop Walsh. We had two performances. The first was a spine-tingling duet from James and Hannah Lonergan of ‘A Whole New World.’ It really was very special to see. Then our sixth form band (and Nana on the drums) put a wonderful performance together of an Emeli Sande song, ‘Read all About It.’

It was lovely to welcome Mr Porter, Headteacher of SS Peter & Paul, to the school on Wednesday. He got the chance to meet up with all the past SS Peter & Paul pupils in year 7 who showed him their homework folders and explained their extra-curricular TAG choices to him. He was very impressed with all of them and pleased to see them doing so well.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the year 11s for taking their mock exams so seriously and I hope that your hard work does pay off. If they haven’t gone as well as hoped it gives you an opportunity to reflect on what you can do better next time when the real thing happens. Did you study hard? Did you study in the right way? Which topics did you not know and how are you going to rectify this? There will be a mock exam day in December linked to the parents evening on December 11th where you will get all your results. I would also say that now is a good time to reflect on your next steps for next year. Remember it is our sixth form open evening next Thursday and we look forward to welcoming all year 11s to the evening.

Finally, do look out for the first edition of the Campion Chronicle which is out today. It will be sent out via ParentMail and also put on to the school website. Our pupils have worked really hard on it and I must thank Dr Sumner for all her hard work on this too.

Thank you all again for your support

Kind Regards

Mr A. Grant

Envision: the success continues On Monday 11th November past and present Sixth Form Envision students were involved in the filming of a professional video to promote the work of community projects such as Envision. MC Saatchi film company brought together students to produce a short film that showed the story of how youth from the Birmingham community can come together to affect social change and make an impact on their communities. The video is part of a Home Office initiative called Building a Better Britain Together in which students from St Edmund Campion Sixth Form will appear. We look forward to viewing the final edit in January. Miss Meisuria

Armistice Day

On Monday 11/11/2019, the students and staff of St Edmund Campion observed two minutes silence. Over one thousand students and staff stood to attention in memory of our fallen fore-fathers and fore -mothers. The following prayer was said as we remembered them.

Lord God, Father of all, we pledge ourselves to serve you and this neighbourhood, to bring relief to all who are in need, and comfort to the sad, lonely, and distressed; Keep us ever mindful of the struggles and achievements of former generations, and of this place where we make our home, now, and in the days to come. Amen.

Year 7 Make Pizza!

A group of year 7 students enjoyed a morning at Pizza Express in Sutton Coldfield this week, learning about the history of the margherita pizza and the ingredients used. They then had the chance the make their own pizzas, which they brought back to school to enjoy. It was a chance for them to practice their social skills and all of the students enjoyed themselves. Their behaviour was excellent and they were a credit to Campion.

Round Midnight Production

Year 7 and Year 8 watched a production from the Round Midnight theatre group called “Cutting Ties” on Tuesday of this week. The theme was about how young people get caught up in knife crime and the consequences of that, not only for them, but for their families as well. It was a very emotive but powerful production and the pupils enjoyed it and got a lot from it. We are sure that the message got through to them that it is never appropriate to carry a weapon and there is always someone in school, and their families, that they can talk to if they have any concerns. Please discuss this further with your child and I am sure they will tell you all about it.

If you have any concerns at all or would like any further information please contact me at school.

Many thanks Mrs J Fleming

Sixth Form Success!

Sixth Form Football News I joined St Edmund Campion Sixth Form from another college this September and, realising that football is a very popular sport at Campion, I decided to try out for the team. I’m very interested in football and I am a football coach. Our first match as a Sixth Form team was against NBA. Early on in the game I scored due to the opposition making a major mistake at the back. Thirty minutes into the game Nirobii scored from outside the box after dribbling past 5 players. The half time score was 2-0. We went into the second half just as strong as we did the first half. Fifteen minutes into the second half, I passed the ball to Nirobii who was the left winger and he put it back in by passing it into Mikey. Mikey looked up and gave me a beautiful assist over the top. I put it down with my chest and shot it in the bottom right corner scoring the third goal. In the last 5 minutes, Kyran got the ball and dribbled past 4 men, crossed it to Javon who smashed it into the goal with an amazing volley. The final score was 4-0 to Campion. Thank you to Mr Hall, our team coach. Anass Acherrat – Year 12

Stage Lights and TV Screens

My first acting job was a supporting role in ‘Annie’ the musical when I was 13. After that I did in-school projects like RWISDA which is an acting competition run by Rudolph Walker who plays Patrick in EastEnders. By competing in this way , I was pushed to be more creative within my acting and soon after I began to create my own acting pieces and began posting them on YouTube. After a few videos I began to get noticed and it led me to audition for my current drama school Inca Arts and be accepted by an acting agency. Since joining Inca Arts, I have been given the opportunity to work with industry professionals and I have learned valuable skills that I can use within my future acting career. Recently I auditioned for a potential brand-new Channel 4 TV series. To my surprise, I was offered the lead role! In January 2020 we will begin filming the pilot episode. If all goes well,

‘Agnes’ will be arriving to your screens very soon.

th Sixth Form Retreat Day - Wednesday 13 November All Year 12 and 13 students completed their mock examinations on Tuesday and because many of them worked so hard during this time we scheduled their retreat day as a chance for them to take time out for themselves, to relax and to reflect. The theme of the day was ‘Baptised and Sent’ which was the mission set out by Pope Francis in October. As part of this day, pupils were all given the opportunity to take part in an art workshop, a meditation and a workshop reflecting on the heroes in their lives as well as how they can become heroes for others. The day closed with the celebration of Mass by Fr. Gerry Lennon. The feedback from students has been very positive and some of the art work created is testament to the pupils in the Sixth Form. Thank you to all those who took part and to the staff who led the workshops.

Sandwell College Calendar Competition 2020

Thank you to all of the pupils who took part in the Sandwell College 2020 Calendar competition, creating some fantastic entries! Good luck to all entrants in the upcoming results.

The Catholic Life of Our School

33nd Sunday in Ordinary Time “Your endurance will win you your lives.” This weeks Gospel could easily have been written earlier this week, because it paints a picture of how our world seems to be at the moment. Jesus prepares us for the part we will play in making the world a better place. It’s not very nice what may happen. However as always, Jesus tells us not to be afraid. “I myself shall give you the eloquence and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to resist or Click to Pray: contradict.” Through faith we can be Log on to Click to Pray and download the reassured that, “not one hair on your app. (on App Store, iTunes and Google Play) to pray with the Pope, and hundreds head will be lost.” Be assured as in the of thousands of Christians around the first reading form the prophet Malachi; world. “the sun of righteousness will shine out with healing rays.” The de Profundis

Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord, Lord, hear my voice! O let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleading.

If you, O Lord, should mark our guilt, Lord, who would survive? But with you is found forgiveness: for this we revere you.

My soul is waiting for the Lord. I count on his word. My soul is longing for the Lord more than watchman for daybreak. Let the watchman count on daybreak and Israel on the Lord.

Prayers for the Dead Because with the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption, Israel indeed he will redeem Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. from all its iniquity. And let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.
