Pope Francis had some wise words to say on this subject last April. He said being Christian ‘is a gift that makes us go forward with the power of the Spirit in the proclamation of Jesus Christ’ and ‘ is enough, it is sufficient to evangelise,’ to preach Christ even amidst persecution or when one lives in insecurity. FRIDAY MARCH 20 2015 SCOTTISH CATHOLIC OBSERVER CHILDREN’S LITURGY 21

Our weekly series on Children’s Liturgy has lesson plans and activity suggestions for use with young people who are on the path to Christ Each week, Catechists will find readings and Psalm responses, complemented by prayer, reflection, FAITH discussion questions, and activities. Please feel free to use them as you wish The lessons are created by Adorer-theologians using the lens of the spirituality of St Maria de Mattias, which also embraces precious blood spirituality FIRST While this is the starting point for the lessons, readers are invited to approach them however the spirit moves you The Church is concerned with the availability and understanding of scripture for children who have their rightful place in the Church. In light of this SCO aims to provide a useful tool in drawing children closer to KIDS the Catholic Faith

N THE wake of my series on the Councils Pope Francis listens as Kiko Arguello, of the Church, I am offering one of the fruits founder of the Neocatechumenal of the latest council: the New Movements. Way, speaks during an audience with Technically, they are called Ecclesial members of the Way in Paul VI hall at the Vatican in February of last year Movements and New Communities, and they are, even today, startlingly different from what went on before. Just how different I hope to exploreI in this short series. They have enjoyed great Pontifical support. The glowing statement made in 2000 by Pope St John Paul II is typical of many Papal endorsements: “The movements and new communities, providential expressions of the new springtime brought forth by the Spirit with the Second Vatican Council, announce the power of God’s love which in overcoming divisions and barriers of every kind, renews the face of the earth to build the civilisation of love.” So what are these movements and communities? Most Catholics will have heard of one of them: Schoenstatt, , , Focolare, L’Arche, St Egidio Community, Catholic Worker Movement, Chemin Neuf, Community of the Beatitudes, , and so on. There are well over 50 of such movements and communities recognised by the Church today. Some are huge. There are an estimated 120 million people who subscribe to Charismatic Renewal, for example. They are not truly an organised group. Others are. The Neocatechumenal Way, for example, has 40,000 communities and over one million members. Around 620,000 adhere in some form or other to the Work of Mary, to give Focolare its official name. In all, around one in every seven Catholics is linked someway or other to the New Movements. All the movements are notable for their strong lay involvement. Many have lay leaderships or leaderships where priests are part of a wider team. Some have men and women living consecrated lives, priests and families, all living out the particular charism of their movement. The Neocatechumenal Way even has its own seminaries, which train priests for the service of local dioceses. This can be confusing, and has caused occasional differences between the movements and local bishops and priests. Most of the movements are also not linked to individual parishes. Somehow, though, they have worked, grown and contributed significantly to the life of the modern Catholic Church.
