Growing to meet the need.

2003 ANNUAL REPORT From Our President

Looking back at 2003, I am struck by the ways Thanks to you, 2003 was an incredible that Foodshare is like many of the clients we year at Foodshare: serve: thrifty, innovative, and enduring. The total amount of food we distribute grew by 13%. Thrifty – precious little goes to waste around here. 2 Foodshare 2003 Annual Report Growing To Meet The Need

Despite having the highest per capita income in our nation, also has one of the most substantial gaps between its “haves” and “have nots.” At present, some 100,000 people throughout Greater Hartford now rely on private emergency food programs each year such as community kitchens, food pantries, shelters, and other social service initiatives. Most peo- ple in need are families and 43,000 of our hungry neighbors are children!

Foodshare is the central hub for a growing network of over 300 partner agencies and social service programs that work to feed these hungry people living in our region. When Foodshare first opened its doors in 1982 there were only 26 such local pro- grams looking for our support.

The overall rise in food handled (both nonperishable and per- ishable) to meet this mounting need drives change at Foodshare. We moved our main operation center to Windsor back in 1991. Not only has the total amount of food we dis- tribute tripled since then – reaching a record 9.2 million pounds in 2003! – but everything associated with handling it has increased as well. We have three times as much truck traffic as we did back in 1991, three times the staff, and now serve twice as many local programs since that time.

Why Are We Experiencing So Much Growth? Along with a ten-fold increase in the number of partner agencies since Foodshare’s inception, the individual organizations themselves have witnessed a tremendous client upswing in recent years. During 2003 alone, many of our local food pantries and soup kitchens reported anywhere from a 20% to 65% increase in the number of people requiring emergency food assistance.

Foodshare constantly strives to discover more and better ways to help meet the needs of so many hungry people. Doing so can really strain the system! To give you some idea of how effective our efforts already are, we currently provide an average 92 pounds of food per person per year. As an affiliate of America’s Second Harvest, the largest network of food banks in the country, we’re distributing nearly double the national average of 52 pounds per client.

And we have more volunteers working at Foodshare than ever before. Individuals who donate their time and talents are a key factor in our continued expansion. There are dozens of important roles that Foodshare volunteers fill in the organization. Many of these regular tasks are directly related to the increased availability of fresh produce.

Growing to meet the need. 3 Fresh Fruits and Vegetables There’s a growing awareness that fresh fruits and vegetables are a vital component of a healthy diet. As a result, they have become high demand items in supermarkets. Since Foodshare works closely with the food industry to obtain edible food that would otherwise go to waste, the amount of produce we receive is on the rise. Many people still think of food banks as collectors of canned goods only. In 2003, howev- er, Foodshare recovered and handled a record 2,384,000 pounds of fresh produce; a quarter of the year’s entire food volume. Including frozen items, perishable food now makes up over a third of our distribution. If this trend continues the ratio of perishable to nonperishable food will become evenly divided – 50/50 – within just a few years.

Even though distributing perishable food in a timely manner is a difficult challenge, Foodshare recognizes that fresh produce is perhaps the best and most important food that our clients can eat. We believe that its proven nutritional benefits should not be considered a luxury, but a basic necessity. That is why we have worked hard to increase the amount of fruits and vegetables available on a regular basis to hungry people in Greater Hartford.

In the past six years or so, Foodshare’s produce program has grown dramatically. We hired a full-time coordinator to maintain and expand relationships with area growers in 1999. We initiated a collaborative effort with the Connecticut Market Authority in 2001 and established a permanent satellite facility at the Hartford Regional Market during Summer 2002. Because of these combined efforts, the amount of produce we received in 2003 was more than triple the 700,000 pounds received in 1999.

When working with such large quantities of produce, some spoilage is inevitable. So Foodshare piloted an organics recycling system in cooperation with the Connecticut Market Authority and the Department of Environmental Protection to deal with this problem in an efficient and earth-friendly manner. Inedible fruit and vegetables are processed through an Organic Resource Recovery System (ORRS), which pulverizes it into an all-natural fertilizer used by local farms. In 2003, we provided 66 tons of this soil-enriching material to Connecticut farmers and prevented it from being dis- carded in landfills.

4 Foodshare 2003 Annual Report Mobile Foodshare In 2002, Foodshare also launched a new rapid food distribution program, called Mobile Foodshare. We developed this mobile pantry program to take fresh food directly to hungry people in the most digni- fied way possible. Now approaching its sec- ond anniversary, the program successfully operates at 24 sites in Hartford, East Hartford, New Britain, Manchester, Bloomfield, Bristol, Stafford Springs, and Vernon. Since this is about the maximum number of sites that one truck can reasonably handle in a regular rotation, and since we have received requests to set up more mobile sites, we have begun to consider ways in which that might be accomplished.

The communities that Mobile Foodshare serves are heavily populated with low- income people. The program not only distributes more food to those who are most likely to face hunger, but it increases the amount of fresh produce available to them on a regular basis. This has multiple benefits:

•Families on limited incomes often face tough choices between paying for rent, utilities, medicine, or buying food. Receiving emergency food assis- tance allows them to meet other basic needs.

•Well-nourished adults are known to be more productive and better able to hold jobs and care for children than those experiencing hunger.

•Increasing the amount of fresh produce that individuals are able to consume promotes good health and may help reduce the occurrence and severity of medical problems.

• The mobile program fosters a sense of community in the neighborhoods that it serves. It is often local volunteers who set up tables and unload food from the truck. And the people coming for food have the opportunity to get to know their neighbors waiting in line with them and to feel less isolat- ed in their struggles.

Looking Ahead Foodshare is now in the early planning stages of deciding how best to address the growing need. We’re taking a close look at the capacity and effectiveness of our cur- rent operations. We’re asking ourselves hard questions about the physical infras- tructure of the organization (i.e., our facilities in Windsor and Hartford). We’re carefully considering adjustments and improvements to the programs currently offered as well as what new ones, if any, should be launched. We’re reviewing the roles performed by our board members, staff, and volunteers.

In determining what future steps should be taken, our core goals remain unaltered. Whatever courses of action are finally chosen, you can be certain they will be firmly rooted in our mission to end hunger as a part of the overall community effort to alleviate poverty in Greater Hartford.
