THE VAMPIRE DIARIES ALTERNATIVE ENDING

By Phelisa Mkendlana

If you are all about vampires, werewolves, witches, and hybrids, basically all things supernatural then I hope you know the story of Elena, Stephan, and Damon. The Vampire Diaries, particularly the story of Klaus and Caroline. I have watched the series more than three times now, their story always shreds me to pieces, every time. They were never given a proper chance to be a couple, Caroline liked him a lot but because her friends hated him, and she was not sure how to feel about it, she chose to side with her friends. Vampire Diaries ending with Caroline leaving for New Orleans with Klaus would have been a sight for sore eyes. Caroline was not just any girl for Klaus, she was feisty, Photo: Unsplash forward, strong, intelligent and a no-nonsense person that was all new to him, she drew him in and so did he. I honestly feel like they deserved to be together, they had fire. Caroline could have been his redemption. Caroline’s relationship with Stephan Salvatore felt forced, I did not feel anything towards it. They only got together because the love of his life fell in love with his brother, Bonnie had Enzo, I guess it was only fitting for them to almost end up together if it was not for Stephan dying. Stephan and Caroline have absolutely no chemistry. That is the only thing about Vampire SOUL FOOD Diaries that still haunts me to this day. Klaus and Caroline were made for each other. P.S. Tyler and Caroline’s relationship never made much sense to me either but that is a love story for another day. By Kamohelo Tladi

THE LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS

By Laiken Faiers

If someone had to hand you a rose, you probably wouldn’t think they were trying to send you a cryptic message, but back in the Victorian era this would be a different story. WHY IT’S ‘TICK-TOCK’ French, German and Russian are all languages we are aware of, but did you now that a language was formed through the use of flowers? Each flower or arrangement of flowers was encrypted with a AND NOT ‘TOCK-TICK’ message intended to be interpreted and these messages were often personal and secret. There is a deep history behind how people have used flowers throughout history. Floriography, or the language of flowers, is believed to have taken root in Persia and Turkey in the 1600’s.

During the Victorian era in France and England, Floriography seemed to be revived because of the By Laiken Faiers increase in popularity. This popularity was probably because it allowed people to send other people messages. They wouldn’t have been able to verbally communicate with each other either because The world is filled with unrecognised rules. Rules that are often hiding in places we they were simply an unpoetic person or because the message was forbidden. It allowed people to least expect, like language. Take the ablaut reduplication rule as an example, if you had to bypass the conservative restraints of the Victorian society in a discrete manner. ask a native English speaker to explain this rule, they would most likely look at you fairly confused. Due to the popularity of using flowers to send people messages, which were often misinterpreted because of people not having the same understanding of which flowers meant what, dictionaries Ablaut reduplication is a rule that English speakers know, yet don’t know. It is something were created, dictionaries that you can still find today! that they have intrinsically learnt over the years. It is the reason that, without even knowing it, they order words based on their vowels. It is the reason they say tick-tock not tock-tick or The concept of using flowers as a way of communicating with others has been around for thousands chit-chat not chat-chit. of years. Even though in modern times people don’t assign flowers with specific messages, they still understand that flowers carry symbolism and meaning. It is why we still give loved ones roses or think The ablaut reduplication is fairly simple to explain. Say there are three words, the order of of lilies as funeral flowers. the vowels would be I, A, O and if there are only two, I would still come first. You may think that this seems like a pretty simple thing to remember, but there are many more rules to keep Flowers have the ability to be more than merely decorative. An already sweet sentiment of receiving in mind. One of these rules is the fact that adjectives in the English language have to follow flowers can become more personalized with just a little bit of research. Maybe next time when you the order of opinion-size-age-shape-colour-origin-material-purpose noun. For something to get or give someone flowers, find out what message they carry. sound wrong, all you have to do is place words in the wrong order. Now the title ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ seems far more complex.

It is often because of these ‘hidden’ rules that languages are so difficult to learn. One can feel a sense of entitlement towards their native language and readily judge others based on how well they speak their language. In a world that is increasingly getting smaller, it is important to remember not to judge others so readily. People should be given credit for learning a new language.

GHOST FASHION JUST SCIENTISTS! By Asithandile Ntsondwa In almost every profession that is male dominated, once a woman breaks down boundaries they are given a prefix to their title e.g. Nicki Minaj and Cardi B are not just rappers they are female rappers or female doctors not being referred to as just doctors. This is confounding especially at our contemporary century which does not conform to gender disparity that was very much prevalent in the medieval times. We have moved from gender-specific language to gender-neutral language that is inclusive and does not attribute gender to person’s work. It is rather problematic to have a person’s gender highlighting their line of work because it overshadows the gender equality phenomenon. Gender specificity is not necessary for any profession as this alludes to gender inequality. Esteemed women in whichever profession should not be highlighted by their gender particularly because it is most certainly inaccurate description of today’s reality whereby women can perform and execute the work just as much.
