    BLAZE BAYLEY CAESAR’S PALACE, MONDAY 5TH MARCH ‘This is a song about how machines are going to take over the world. Because when that happens, there will be a Second Messiah!’ Like, yeah Blaze, whatever man. Let’s get this straight: I don’t like Iron Maiden. I can’t hear that name without thinking of widdly guitar solos, pompous over-the-top lyrics, grown men in shorts, Dungeons & Dragons, scampi flavour Nik-Naks, sacrificial virgins - you get the picture. So what am I doing at a gig whose main attraction is Blaze Bayley, the man who fronted Maiden through what is considered to have been their worst years? Well, there is the added bonus of Risactonia and Black Atom, two bands that are always good to watch. And I have been informed that Blaze’s solo material sounds nothing like that of his previous employers. Anyway, who can resist a good metal gig? This is Aberdeen after all, a lonely outpost that plays host to such diverse names as David Gray and Coldplay. It’s just too good an opportunity to miss. By the time Blaze come on, a steady crowd has gathered, largely made up of old Maiden fans, who seem to crawl out of the woodwork whenever such events come around, plus a good number of metal kids. Even Fudge decide to grace us with their presence. Black seems to be the colour of choice tonight. The band are dressed in black. The stage is black. And I am wearing, well, white for some reason. The other thing I should mention about the stage is the huge drum-kit that takes up half of it.

    Revista Brasileira de Estudos da Canção – ISSN 2238-1198 Natal, n.3, jan-jun 2013. www.rbec.ect.ufrn.br Historical Themes in Iron Maiden Songs (Part I): From the Cavemen to the Vikings Lauro Meller1 [email protected] Abstract: This paper intends to deepen some of the ideas put forward in a previous study of ours, “Historical Characters and Facts in Iron Maiden Songs: a journey from Pre-History to The Second World War” (MELLER, 2005). Our aim is to demonstrate that the lyrics to Maiden’s songs stand out in the Heavy Metal scenario (whose lyrics usually have as subject matters Satanism, sex, drinking, and drug abuse). Avoiding these commonplace topics, Steve Harris, the main songwriter in the group, invests in more elaborate lyrics, either inspired by literary works or about historical themes. In fact, there are so many songs in the band’s discography that deal with historical themes that it is even possible to draw a timeline that stems from Pre-History and reaches The Second World War. While our analytical approach tends to focus on the lyrics, it will not ignore some aspects that are crucial to a better understanding of songs, namely the strictly musical elements (melody, harmony, rhythm, arrangement, etc.), and performance.     HEAVY METAL THE CULTURAL ROOTS A WORK BY FILIPPO FESTUCCIA Despite being – quite truthfully, I have to admit – known in for many years as an extremely noisy and immoral music, there is no doubt that heavy metal gives the most cultural suggestions to modern music. It is indeed true that the press never states this fact. (Even musical magazines have some sort of repulsion against heavy metal). They do nothing but praise the newest fashions. However, we are not going to generalize, we are not going to hide all the explicitly satanic, noisy, violent, disgusting side of heavy metal, all the evil figures that are rightfully associated with sub-genres such as black metal (we have a clear example in Burzum, who is still in jail after having committed a brutal homicide; but it’s true that even in black metal we can find fine musicians and really polite people): that kind of music is the expression of situations as hard to deny as to accept. But I don’t see fairness in how heavy metal is spoken of by the “others”, every time our music becomes an instrument in the hands of scandal-mongering press in every day’s reality show. I believe therefore that we need a little rehabilitation for all the amazing musicians who dedicate their lives in spreading culture and good values through heavy metal. AND THEN THERE WERE BLACK SABBATH The birth of metal is still a riddle. We won’t plunge into the unsolvable debate about the first heavy metal artist (some say Led Zeppelin were the first, some say Steppenwolf, Grand Funk Railroad, Cream, Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix and many others…), but we will assume here as fact that Black Sabbath were the first heavy metal band.

Den Namen dazu fand er im Wachskabinett „Madame Tusseauds“, wo ihn die ‘Iron Maiden’ (Eiserne Jungfrau), ein mittelalterliches Folterinstrument beeindruckte. Mit einigen anderen Bands (z.B. Metallica) zählt IRON MAIDEN zu den Mitbegründern der inzwischen legendären „New Wave of British Heavy-Metal“, der Wiedergeburt des traditionellen Metal-Sounds, gespielt in den 60-Jahren von Bands wie Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, ... ♦ Bandgeschichte: Nach einigen unbedeutenden Aufnahmen spielte die Band im Jahre 1978 die legendären „Soundhouse Tapes“ ein, ein Demo mit 3 Tracks. 1980 folgte das erste richtige Album „Iron Maiden“, mit Hits wie Iron Maiden, Running Free, Prowler. Dieses Album machte die Band in England so populär, daß sie als Vorgruppe von KISS, bei deren Bravo-Kiss Tour die Hauptband an die Wand spielten. 1981 kam das Album „Killers“ und die erste richtige Welt-Tournee. Nach dieser Tour gab es Probleme mit Sänger Paul Di’Anno, über die viel spekuliert wird, so daß er die Band verließ. Sein Nachfolger Bruce DICKINSON machte die Band zur Metal-Band Nr.1, vor allem durch seine gewaltige Stimme, seine unnachahmliche Bühnenpräsenz und seinen Einsatz.
