Fashion in Munich – a cut above the rest

The fashion industry has deep roots in Munich. The Bavarian capital boasts a vibrant and surprisingly diverse fashion scene—not to mention excellent economic conditions under which to cultivate a flourishing fashion landscape. In Munich, strong purchasing power combines with a very extensive infrastructure and a perfect geographic situation for the fashion industry, within easy reach of Austria, Switzerland and northern Italy. On a more general level, local knowledge and design resources have nourished a distinctly creative milieu. And close proximity to the Alps and a breathtaking array of lakes only add to the attraction of this pulsating city. Munich is one of ’s leading fashion hubs and is especially strong in the trade fair and ordering sectors. Major international names of the caliber of Escada, Etienne Aigner and Bogner were founded here and have for many decades been doing a brisk business on the banks of the Isar. An abundance of smaller companies and design workshops with creative fashion designers are likewise inspired by the city’s lively atmosphere. The city center and a variety of urban district centers provide shopping landscapes to every taste. Here, world-famous luxury brands rub shoulders with unique and sustainable designer-made collections. The top-end labels that line the Maximilianstrasse, Theatinerstrasse and Briennerstrasse have in particular done much to establish

Munich's reputation as a truly exclusive fashion and shopping venue.

Training and education too are woven into the fabric of Munich's fashion industry. Several respected Munich fashion schools cultivate innovation and encourage young designers to experiment and grow. These establishments have already brought forth a wealth of talent. To support up-and-coming fashion designers in Munich and raise awareness of the Bavarian capital as a fashion hub, local government in 2016 began presenting the Münchner Modepreis (Munich Fashion Award) every two years to graduates from the city's fashion schools. The prize is presented within the framework of the Munich Creative Business Week (MCBW) design event.

The conspicuous local presence of the fashion press testifies to Munich's role in the vanguard of this fast-paced industry. The editors of popular fashion journals such as Vogue Deutschland, GQ, Madame, InStyle, Cosmopolitan and Elle are all headquartered in the Bavarian capital.

The textile industry in numbers

The textile and apparel industry is the second-largest consumer goods sector in Germany, currently employing more than 135,000 people nationwide. The most forceful drivers of growth are technical textiles, which are used in all kinds of high- tech products and generate around 60 percent of the industry's revenue.
